Obama Urges Congress to Pass Federal Hate Crimes Act

Last night, Obama released a statement in support of the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act (aka The Matthew Shepard Act), urging its passage:

Obama "This week, the House of Representatives is expected to consider H.R. 1913, the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2009.  I urge members on both sides of the aisle to act on this important civil rights issue by passing this legislation to protect all of our citizens from violent acts of intolerance – legislation that will enhance civil rights protections, while also protecting our freedom of speech and association.  I also urge the Senate to work with my Administration to finalize this bill and to take swift action."

As I mentioned yesterday, the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force has provided a convenient launching pad for you to contact your congressman about this important bill.

  1. released a statement? why not a speech? anyhow, better than nothing, and obviously his team will be working hard behind the scene with Congresspersons to get the bill passed, but I would have preferred him to be more VISIBLY involved (i.e., a speech condemning discrimination and hate, and the need for comprehensive legislation to address the violations of our civil rights including ENDA and repeal of DOMA) on the matter because I think it would have great impact on many of his supporters who may still not support LGBTQ rights.

  2. This is a good start. We shall see whether good intentions pave the way for meaningful legislation.

  3. Yeah, just waiting for folks to shut their ears and pretend like this didn't happen.

Hmmm the list I found of cosponsors has 120, but only 8 of them are Republicans. What's up with that? I thought the two parties were the same on all gay issues.
