Provincetown Gay Basher Eric Patten Pleads 'Not Guilty' to Hate Crime

Patten2

Eric Patten, the 20-year-old Winthrop, Massachusetts man who assaulted two women in Provincetown over the holiday weekend, has pleaded "not guilty":

Patten3"Patten pleaded not guilty as his arraignment this morning on a charge of assault and battery under the state hate crime statute. He is also charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (a window), assault and battery on a police officer, malicious destruction of property over $250, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. At around 1:08 a.m. Saturday morning in Provincetown pedestrians alerted police to a fight on Commercial Street at the Post Office Café, an eatery in the center of town. Police saw Patten punching a woman on the ground, according to police Sgt. Carrie Lopes. The victim was one of two women, ages 22 and 23, who were allegedly assaulted by Patten. He is accused of punching one of the women with his right fist and calling the two women 'faggots,' thinking they were gay men."

The judge maintained an existing $1,000 bail requirement despite requests by the prosecutor to raise it to $10,000, according to the Cape Cod Times:

"Patten’s father is attorney Edward Patten of Dennis. His mother lives in Winthrop and teaches at Salem State College, defense attorney Edward Veara told the judge. 'Both parents fully intend to support Eric,' Veara said in court. 'He’s going to be back here. They will take responsibility.' Eric Patten was planning to spend his second summer in Provincetown this year, staying alone at his father’s condominium in town, Veara said. He is a student at the University of Colorado and worked for the Dolphin Fleet of Provincetown whale watch company last summer, Veara said. He planned to work at a shop and in a restaurant this summer."

  1. Of course he pleaded not guilty - because we really thought they were faggots! Since they weren't, no harm, no foul, right?

  3. Is this dude serious? He lives in Ptown for the summer, works there in the public sector and is HOMOPHOBIC? You've got to be kidin' me...Lock his bigot ass up!
Looks like those women got some nice swings in before he got arrested tho! Good for you!
After CAs ruling today, we will take our civil liberties if they're taken from us!
When is the next march on Washington?

  4. Mom and Dad are divorced and Dad owns a condo in Ptown ?

    Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Sounds like the underage drunk (obviously if not drugs) has some Daddy issues he took out on strangers. How nice they will stand by the creep.

  5. Well obviously this fine, upstanding, straight boy is the victim of a radical gay plot to undermine the moral integrity of the United States. He most certainly "tripped" into those soulless lesbians that flaunt their perversions by looking like men. Back in the good old days we burned women like this at the stake. This isn't a hate-crime, your Honor, he was trying to "help" that woman up by and she fought his assistance. Why look at the evidence on his bruised Aryan face.

Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, you must move to acquit this boy of these charges or this case may open the floodgates where vicious homoSEXUALS will actually demand the right to exist.

Yeah, I'm being bitchy but I don't feel to warm and fuzzy toward straights at the moment.

  6. I was wondering why a person like him was even in a place like Provincetown, and aside from the free condo, I guess I still am. Why not stay in Colorado for the summer if you hate gays so much?

Aside from the possibility of repressed homosexuality/internalized homophobia as a motive for the attack, does anyone else also think the victim and the culprit look strangely similar? Did he see himself in this woman and freak out?

  8. A picket group needs to go wherever he is employed accusing the employer of harboring a homophobic bigot who beats women. Identify him and point him out everywhere he goes in Provincetown. Haunt him wherever he goes.

  10. His daddy is a lawyer in Dennis (small Cape Cod town) and the judge in Orleans (small Cape Cod town near Dennis) decided to deny the prosecutor's request for $10,000 bail and instead allowed just $1,000 bail for the son of two professionals?

Something is fishy here. With daddy's connections, I an sure he will walk away with a slap on the wrist. These small Cape Cod towns are a little corrupt when it comes to justice.

PLEASE LETS ALL KEEP AN EYE ON THIS CASE AS DADDY AND THE JUDGE NEED TO BE SCRUTINIZED.

And if he ever shows his face in P-Town, he's in a for a beating. They should put up "Wanted" posters in every business with his face on them AND boycott his employers if he winds up still working there.

  11. QUESTION:

When a black dude does something obnoxious do you refer to him as a 'stupid black boy'?

Yeah, of course you don't...you wouldn't dare post something like, and certainly wouldn't use the 'N' word.

Winthrop, MA borders the East Boston (central American ghetto) section of the city of Boston and Revere, MA which is working class, urban and very mixed. In fact, to get on the mainland people from Winthrop have to go through Boston. Winthrop IS NOT a fancy town, mostly mid middle class, and very mixed ethnically and socially. A white 'girl' I know is married to a Rican and they raise their family there no problems....it's the latino ghetto East Boston, next door (1/2 mile), where the trouble starts. There have been numerous BRUTAL gay/lesbian assaults there with little mention in the media, but oh my God....when the drunks start brawling in the early AM at P-Town and the poo hits the fan.

I am NOT excusing the punk, Just saying, that's all

  12. Firstly, I'd like to point out that there is more to a story than the media tells. Despite the kids actions, I dont think anyone here knows the complete story. I personally want to know what happened to his face to make him look so beat up, are those wounds really caused by someone who was acting in self defense, or did others jump in and if so what happened to them?! Secondly, who are any of you to make accusations about him being gay, or having "Daddy issues." I didn't know we were all experts/supporters on/of Freud. Theres a reason they call them Freudian THEORIES..seeing as they are unsubstantiated. In addition, I think its ridiculous to to critizice someone for having two parents that have descent jobs who are professionals. I live in Winthrop, and I can personally say that there are very few "RICH BRATS" here, for the most part we work hard for our money/assets and I dont feel Eric Patten is excluded from the majority.

  13. This is why I support torture. So it can be used on gay-bashing scum like him.

  14. One inident should not characterize a person in a whole, despite the vulgarity of this incident, the kid isn't a bad kid!

  16. I think it's fair to assume that he's not going to find employment in PTown this summer. It's a small town and word of this has already spread through the business community.

That said if I happen to see him I am so going to hit on him.

  17. So apparently I am the only one who thinks that the victim and the culprit look alike?

    Posted by: paul c | May 26, 2009 10:48:33 PM

  18. CHRIS, you are as much of a pig as Patten is. i hope that he spends time behind bars.

    Posted by: nic | May 26, 2009 11:07:50 PM

  19. oh yea.. who are we to judge if this underage drunk kid is really gay.. cause we never get beaten by closeted people who are taught to hate themselves. if this kid does do time (i doubt it) he will not change unless he enjoys the repeated rapes he will receive in jail. would we even be having this discussion if he had done this to a straight couple?

    Posted by: charlie | May 26, 2009 11:47:10 PM

  20. @CHARLIE,
in pronounciation, yea = yay; yeah = yah. more than that, you are beyond redemption. of course, we would be having this conversation if they had been a straight couple. violence is violence, irrespective of the sex or sexual inclination of those upon which it is visited. the kid's sexuality is not at issue. the brutality, and the hate that inspired it, is.

    Posted by: nic | May 27, 2009 4:42:53 AM

  21. Personally i feel that most crimes of this brutality and hate would have some source. your example of violence is violence is without redemption and would validate arguements against hate crimes. oh.. and you shouldn't end you sentences with is.. it's just not proper.

  22. Is ANYBODY on here familar with closing time, human beings, alcohol, drugs? ANYONE ever been in a bar or club brawl/fight, or even observed them in the flesh? Judging by these comments most haven't or are disingenuous.

P-Town is WELL KNOW in the northeast among gays and straights alike for it's very large gay summer population....it's not a little town surrounded by folks who've never seen a lesbian or homosexual, in addition to being the only state/region where gay marriage is legal; ditto Winthrop which is basically Boston, being roughly 2-3 miles from downtown.

And what's this 'he's a closet case' talk? Why can't SOME people accept that VERY often there's little more to a fight/brawl than alcohol and/or drugs....no deep sentiment or emotion attached at all? Many things happen in life for no particular reason at all, except being in the wrong place, at the wrong time. It's like many people finding it impossible JFK was killed by a lone, mentally unstable young man who snatched a serendipitous opportunity; there must some greater, deeper reasoning behind it all....well, no there doesn't. Many (most?) violent incidents that occur in our society everyday, happen for the most mundane reasons.

Finally, I live a city with a very diverse population, including a large, open gay population. I also grew up in such an environment. In my life I've experienced multiple examples of gays and lesbians behaving badly/obnoxiously in public towards fellow gays and straights alike, and I'm not even talking about the clubs and bars. The idea that gays are so innocent, passive, and pure they wouldn't dare instigate an argument or fight is ridiculous. And this one of the problems with hate crime laws: the default is pretty much set to those covered by the law automatically assumed to be innocent victims, which again, many times are, but a substantial number aren't. I really don't believe in these laws that effectively give some addition rights compared to others; laws covering assaults are enough for everybody, laws that give some 'special' treatment are too easily abused.

  23. I feel for the parents. It must be awful for them to have a son who is a hater. If the kid has any sense, he'll stay far away from P-town this summer (and longer probably) so as not to incite an already combustible situation. Let the gay people of P-town have their peace without his presence this summer.
