Kiss-In Protesting Detention Held at Mormon Temple in Salt Lake City

Hundreds of mostly same-sex couples "swarmed" the Main Street Plaza in Salt Lake City near the Mormon Temple Sunday to protest the detention of a male couple, Derek Jones and Matt Aune, by LDS security guards last Thursday after they embraced and kissed on the plaza. Aune and Jones were cited for trespassing.

Jones Sunday's kiss-in was a gentle show of force:

"The atmosphere Sunday morning was genial, and even merry among protesters. Organizer and former city councilwoman Deeda Seed encouraged 'gentle' displays of public affection, and participants stuck to short kisses on the mouth and cheeks. Several LDS Church security guards dressed in suits kept a watchful eye, and turned some protesters back when they tried to cross the church-owned plaza or walk onto the property to share a kiss. Guards called police when protesters staged a walk onto the plaza, and officers stood to block the entrance.' They were asked repeatedly not to come onto the property, and they chose to do so anyway,' said LDS church spokeswoman Kim Farah. Though a few people spoke in protest, there were no direct confrontations, and guards did not stop the protesters gathered past the property line. In a prepared statement, Farah said the church welcomes the millions of visitors who come to its headquarters each year. "

  2. One correction. There weren't "hundreds" of couples "swarming" the plaza. There were maybe 50 couples at most, as videos available at youtube clearly show. Let's keep it factual.

  3. God is love - except, apparently, in Utah.

  4. steve

I'm all for condemning the mormon coo-cooness

god is NOT love because no god exists. You are just enabling the whole thing

Lets entertain your idea for a moment though. god is love is logically inaccurate. If a deity existed, the simple fact of suffering existing in the world shows that god is NOT love. If god is love would said deity allow children to go to sleep without food in their bellies? would said deity allow babies to die of malnutrition, malaria, HIV etc?

Said deity is either evil for allowing such or completely impotent and powerless.

If god exists, whence comes evil? If god can stop evil and doesn't then god is evil. If god can not stop evil then god is not god

  5. "...the church welcomes the millions of visitors who come to its headquarters each year."

    Führerbunker is more like it.

  6. The organizer, Deeda Seed, said there were at least 200 people who came, which is more than 50 couples.

  8. Homophobia is unacceptable everywhere BUT there is something to be said about knowing your place. If you want to protest the LDS churches stance - don't prove them right about being irrational - revoke their privilege of converting public property into a private space, question the nepotisim of a state government that acts as a puppet for a theocracy, challenge the tax exempt status of a political organization that masquerades as a church, or better yet...bring tow 14 year old girl. Maybe they will be allowed to kiss each other.

  9. I have a question, who staged the kiss in? i would like you address so i can come hang out on your property weather you like it or not because if the laws of trespassing don't apply to you then they don't apply to me. All you GAY people are just like the blacks people you have blow this out of proportion, into a gay rights issue when it is a simple issue of property rights. the church owns the land they don't want that happening there they asked you to leave, you leave end or story quit trying to make something of this.

  10. Why is this not assault and a hate crime against the Mormon Church? Many more charges should have been levied against these foolish and reckless people.

If this happened (which it never would) at the Vatican, any mosque in the world, a Buddhist or Shinto Shrine, or any other Christian holy place, it would have been world-wide news, with the perpetrators vilified and arrested as they should have been. But since the LDS Church has decided to "turn the other cheek", this gross offense disappears into obscurity like a rat in the darkness of a sewer.

Be assured that anyone attempting to harass and assault a member of my family or anyone in my proximity would understand the wrath of God.

Gays are not a race or creed that would even begin to support an argument of "equality" of civil rights. They are more than equal and far from civil, themselves. They are a loud, obnoxious minority with nothing to support any of their claims and whining. They have chosen their lot in life, let them reap the consequences--which will never be positive.

  11. And Brad Snyder, you are an idiot who has no idea what you're writing about.

How would you like to catch hepatitis, AIDS, or any plethora of diseases from some zealot trying to "kiss" you. If that's your desire, then hold a "kiss-in" as often as you like and trim the population a bit.

    Have a nice day.

  12. When I look at Martin Luther King, I see a humble man who like Ghandi used the spoken word to show how inappropriate it was to segregrate people by the color of their skin. He won favor because he displayed character and sought peace.

It is ugly and disrespectful to claim that gay rights is even in the same place as civil right. Civil Rights sought equal consideration reguardless of the color of their skin. Gay rights as displayed here seeks an amoral society that embraces open sexuality without consideration of the benefit or cost to society. We know it is bad and should judge it so! We are not perfect, but as a society if we do not defend any type of morality, there will be no morality.

  13. GOD IS LOVE GOD IS LOVE! that is the password for gays to justify themselves and violate GOD's Comanments. Just show me one homosexual couple that follow the good example of Adam & Eve...they do not understand the scriptures or they just want to ignore it...Dudes if you want license to break GOD's comanments then follow SATAN because he really is the king of debauchery and God´s enemy.

  14. Was NOAH gay? Were Peter, James and John gay? Adam tought: "for this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife and they will become one flesh" (GEN 2:24)
Homosexuals are following SODOM and GOMORRAH's methods disarraying society and caring less about God and his judgments.
    (Gen 19:24-25)
For, behold, the day cometh, that shall burn as an oven; and all the proud, yea, and all that do ewickedly, shall be stubble: and the day that cometh shall burn them up, saith the Lord of hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch. (Malachi 4:1) BE MORAL..BE SAINT!

  15. What right these gay's are talking about?.. right to kiss another guy? right to spread HIV? Right to be immoral and disgusting?.. are you kidding me?There were created only two gender... MALE and FEMALE.. there is no such thing as SHE-MALE, unless CHARLES DARWIN is right with his theory, which certainly is not.

This goes out to all the SHE_MALES.. try kissing your boyfriend in my backyard and you will know what hit SODOM and GOMORRAH.
