News: Senators Do the Darnedest Things, The Jackson 3 & A New Zealand Travesty

Alg_bruno

roadIn honor of Bruno's opening today, check out this love him/hate him piece from the New York Daily News. "Show me someone who's really offended by [the character] Bruno and I'll show you a highly self-righteous person," says psychiatrist Mark Goulston.

ALeqM5gSdfXwCvGxNHGFuHjtXFjFJlJIuQ roadPresident Obama met with Pope Benedict XVI at the Vatican. (Pictured: Obama being greeted by Bishop James Harvey.) Despite their differences (to put it mildly) on abortion and stem cell research (and don't forget the gays), Obama thanked the Pope for receiving him and said, "It's a great honor."

roadSenator Roland Burris, controversially appointed by then-Governor Rod Blagojevich to fill a vacancy in the Illinois Senate created by the election of President Barack Obama, will reportedly not seek a full term in 2010.

roadSenator John Ensign (R-NV) has admitted that his parents (they're alive???) paid his mistress's family nearly $100,000 "out of concern." Concern for their son's career and reputation? The money was allegedly not taken from campaign funds.

John-kerry-newspaper-hearings roadSenator John Kerry has announced his support for Massachusetts A.G. Martha Coakley's federal lawsuit challenging DOMA.

roadConvicted American journalists Laura Ling and Euna Iee were supposed to be sent to a prison labor camp in North Korea, but rumor has it they're at a guest house while officials seek talks with the U.S.

roadGay Panic on Holiday: In New Zealand, 32-year-old Hungarian tourist Ferdinand Ambach beat 69-year-old Ronald Brown to death with a banjo and then rammed the instrument down his throat. He's just been found guilty...of manslaughter.

Naked!
—an exhibition of art that exposes "sundry flesh"—opened last night and runs through September 19 at the Paul Kasmin Gallery in New York. "Naked is not nude nor 'naturalist'—it is altogether more intriguing, predicating perhaps a state of desire, whether narcissistic or voyeuristic, that sense of being naked as an active, self-conscious state of heightened awareness if not arousal." The show features contributions from Jack Pierson (work pictured), Andy Warhol, David LaChapelle, Charles Hovland and many others. (Site is art, not porn, but is still probably NSFW.)

roadThe Amateur Gourmet's singing, dancing tribute to...cooking fish.

roadIn males, sexuality can be determined by birth order. The more older brothers he has, the more likely he is to be gay. Wait, I think I saw this movie—wasn't it pre-condom?

roadMichael Jackson's dermatologist may or may not be the father of his children, but he doesn't want them turning into "the next version of the Jackson 3."

Singapore_flag roadSingapore will keep homosexuality illegal. But don't worry—they won't prosecute you for it.

roadAccording to Levi Johnston, Sarah Palin resigned for one reason only—greed. Palin's spokesman Meghan Stapleton fires back: "It is interesting to learn Levi is working on a piece of fiction while honing his acting skills." Oh, snap. But if Levi's working on a piece of fiction, Sarah's Barbara Cartland.

  1. Could not agree with this more...

"On the other end of the spectrum are those viewers who don't like Bruno, who typically feel victimized by the world and who take themselves very seriously. Their core identity is that of a victim, Goulston says."

Also, Bruno haters are terrible in bed.

  2. "Despite their differences (to put it mildly) on abortion and stem cell research (and don't forget the gays)"

Since when do they have a difference in their treatment of gays?

    I call bullshit!

  3. DAVID,

don't be so precious with your writing: "But if Levi's working on a piece of fiction, Sarah's Barbara Cartland." wtf? plus, don't send your readers on empty chases ('Site is art...').

  4. "On the other end of the spectrum are those viewers who don't like Bruno, who typically feel victimized by the world and who take themselves very seriously. Their core identity is that of a victim, Goulston says."

Now the studios are hiring quacks to tell us what is funny and what isn't?

"Also, Bruno haters are terrible in bed."

I despise Bruno, but am great in bed =p

  5. "Show me someone who's really offended by [the character] Bruno and I'll show you a highly self-righteous person"

Oh BULLSHIT, total utter bullshit. How about people that aren't offended but merely sick of SBC's waaaaay beyond tired shtick, who are sick of only one side of gay life --the shallow, fashionista, sex-obsessed fem side-- being presented, who are sick of asshole breeders making money off of us by being gay stepin-fetchits?

That article is a perfect example why my one encounter with psychiatry was very short and ended with me laughing at the idiot across the desk who thought he had brilliant insights in to my mind. Parasites, the lot of 'em.

  6. The thing about having older brothers is true among a disproportionate number of the gay people I know. But I wonder what will happen now that family sizes are growing ever smaller.

@ The Phoenix and Nic, I really don't understand the points you're trying to make.

  7. "I despise Bruno, but am great in bed =p"

We'll have to ask your wife about that.

(sorry, I couldn't resist. It's the Bruno spirit in me :))

  8. Have to chime in - I hate Bruno and am also great in bed.

As to the "people who are offended" by Bruno quote - God, I don't like whoever is posting right now - Let me say this - You can hate Bruno and NOT be offended by him. Very little offends me. However, when I see something that is so obviously bad for gay people, I can't help but acknowledge that. I think the Bruno crap is often funny - but that doesn't mean I have to pay for it when I think it does much more harm than good.

Here's my psychological evaluation - Those gays who love Bruno and promote it, and line up to go see it are saying that they'd rather have a cheap laugh than see society progress. That's okay - just be honest enough to acknowledge it. Have fun at the multiplex! At least maybe soon we'll stop being barraged by Bruno promotions on Towleroad!

Obama and the Pope - not that different on gays - they both think we are rotten sinners bound for hell.

Birth Order and Sexuality - Where have you been?! That cartoon from "For the Bible Tells Me So" (great great documentary, by the way) - has been around for years covering this. Pre-condom joke? Fail.

I'm not liking Towleroad so much after the past 6 weeks. :(

  10. Bruno - Tired schtick that needs to be given a rest. As another commenter said, another example of straight people making money off of us by making fun of us, and we say nothing. I more offended by the gay community's acceptance of him than by what he says. It's the same complacency that has lead to Perez Hilton being on mainstream talk-shows as a spokesman for the gay community.

Obama and the Pope - The difference isn't in their opinion of gays. The difference is in their approach. The Pope, at least, is honest in his disdain. Obama pretends to approve, only to forget we exist.

  11. LOL. Henry, Dan... your comments are as self-righteous as it gets.

    Thanks for providing concrete proof.

  12. Hmm, more to this post than only Bruno.

The Naked! gallery looks very promising. Some beautiful art on that site!

  13. "LOL. Henry, Dan... your comments are as self-righteous as it gets. Thanks for providing concrete proof"

The only proof here is that you're a total fucking idiot who can't quite grasp that people disagreeing about something doesn't make them "self-righteous", it's makes them....wait for it....people who disagree about something. Jeebus, if anyone is "self-righteous" in the Bruno debate, it's the "Oh, get over yourself Mary! It's only a movie" types.

  14. @ PAUL R,

what can i say, sweets. if you don't get it, you don't get it. i'm talking about clarity in writing.

i'm with CRISPY on the Bruno shizzle.

as to birth order, i should be unhappily heterosexual, saddled with a mortgage and 4 kids, working overtime, but through happenstance, i was the second son who was born queer.

    Posted by: nic | Jul 10, 2009 3:22:42 PM

  15. "...with me laughing at the idiot across the desk who thought he had brilliant insights in to my mind. Parasites, the lot of 'em."

Even though I like Bruno-- when it comes to shrinks--I'm with you, Henry. I hate 'em. Even with all their highfalutin training and experimenting they still couldn't do a damn thing about my alcoholism, suicide attempts, flirtation with transsexualism, my sexual attraction to OJ Simpson, and penis envy.

Too many gay people (and Jewish women) are hooked on therapy. Psychiatrists aint worth shit.

Posted by: Derrick from Philly | Jul 10, 2009 3:23:32 PM

  16. Nic, but who are you writing it to. That piece wasn't written by a David. Am I missing something?

    Posted by: NYCGuy | Jul 10, 2009 3:29:34 PM

  17. Henry,
If shrinks aren't your thing, group therapy might be a good way to work on your low self-esteem.

    Posted by: crispy | Jul 10, 2009 3:34:43 PM

  18. Nic - if you're the second son, then doesn't that prove the point of the study? I read it as the youngest sibling is more likely to be gay.

I'm the youngest of four - queer as can be. Maybe they are onto something. Though admittedly I was only raised with my next older brother and he's a good seven years older than me. The concern about such a study is it implies that being gay is predictable based on the environment in which one is raised rather than the argument that one is born gay.

    Posted by: Alex | Jul 10, 2009 3:48:00 PM

  19. "In males, sexuality can be determined by birth order. The more older brothers he has, the more likely he is to be gay."

This isn't always true? I am the oldest of three boys. Both me and the middle one are gay. The youngest is sraight. Hmmmm...something to think about.

    Posted by: RB | Jul 10, 2009 3:54:53 PM

  20. It's not about how many brothers you are raised with, but how many males your birth mother bore before you. They think it might have something to do with maternal testosterone levels, which are higher in both women who have born sons previously and in older mothers(who are also more likely to produce a gay son statistically speaking). My guess is there's something to it, and the fact that women are havign children later and later is offsetting reduced family sizes.

  21. i dunno. but, my mom spit me from her vagina after two girls and one boy. my younger brother was born 7 yesrs later. he is straight as can be, and i love dick and huevos. go figger.

i think there is some truth to the idea of hormonal influences on an embryo. however, i thank whatever gods there are that i was born queer -- free of impediments.

    Posted by: nic | Jul 10, 2009 4:51:51 PM

  22. @NYCGUY,

i was addressing david ehrenstein. he is ok, but sometimes, his verbosity gets in the way. i'm just sayin'....

again, as to birth order, i had always understood that the third male in a brood would be likely a 'mo, irrespective of the twats that were birthed before. hence, david's comment about condoms. we need more octomoms. the irresponsible breeders keep giving us more mouths to feed. and, we queers are left to sweep up after.

  23. @KEVIN, HI-5, bro.

    Posted by: nic | Jul 10, 2009 5:21:36 PM

  24. ok. so i completely fucked up. i meant to say, "matthew rittenmund". but, can you blame me? all germanic/jewish/slavik/nothern-european names sound the same. hehehe.

    Posted by: nic | Jul 10, 2009 5:32:29 PM

  25. This Bruno situation is hilarious. SBC creates a character compiled of every negative stereotype possible. Who, in real-life, would be entirely unbelievable; and still, ignorant and narrow-minded heterosexuals fall for his charade like gullible school children. Oops, did I say heterosexuals?
