Baptist Preacher to Congregation: ‘When I go to Bed at Night [I] Pray for Barack Obama to Die and Go to Hell’

And here is an older video (via pam's house blend) of Anderson being heckled at his church for preaching against Obama, and then telling the heckler to get the hell out, and another of Anderson arguing that he's not a racist and Obama is white.

    Not surprising-
    ignorance + hate-
    it is a powerful tool-
and very effective when wrapped in the mythology that is religion; the Christian Taliban is alive and well in AZ.
We will neer learn in this country-as long
as the Religious Reich have so much influence.

  2. crispy says

    This is from his website:

“Pastor Anderson holds no college degree but has well over 100 chapters of the Bible committed to memory, including almost half of the New Testament.”

  3. Androjai says

wow… just wow. It sounds like terrorism to me. Such hatred coming from a “man of god”. Not good for those people to listen to a deluded hate-filled pedagog. This is how bad things start…….

  4. Bart says

If you don’t think the Secret Service is keeping track of this douche bag. And as a Christian, I can only shake my head and understand this is why people think we’re all loons. It’s both disgusting and pathetic that this retard has half the New Testament committed to memory but has learned nothing from the life of Jesus Christ. Wow. My three old can memorize things…he can’t understand them but he can memorize. Guess that puts my little boy a step ahead of this piece of crap all dressed up in his preacher clothes. If it’ll make anyone feel any better (okay, it will me) I believe that if Jesus were here today, he would find a way to get to this guy’s church on Sunday and bitch slap him until he cried for what he is doing in God’s name.

  5. CKNJ says

There is a fine line between free speech and hate speech… and it has been crossed MANY times recently… the people showing up with Obama-made-to-be-Hitler posters, this absolute hate-monger saying he prays for Obama to die and go to hell… ASTONISHING that we actually are allowing this and not prosecuting this. It’s incitement to violence as far as I am concerned. Of course the Republicans are not saying anything against it because in their hearts most of them seem to agree with it… otherwise they would speak out. What a sad turn of events for our country. President Bush said he wanted to be a ‘uniter’ not a ‘divider’ when he came into office 8 odd years ago, and yet on his watch, the country became so divided, it looks like it will never unite again…

  6. clint says

Most of these so-called “Christians” don’t really know anything of Christianity at all. They are as if someone went out to my Jetta, read my owner’s manual, then decided they knew how the thing works, how to drive it, how to fix it, etc. Look at the room in which he preaches. There is no cross, there is no altar, no chalice or bread-plate, nothing in that space that says “sacred”. There is no beauty there, no symbolic language, no quotes from theologians and saints, nothing whatsoever to put him or any member of his Baptist club in any kind of place within a vast Christian tradition. It is just him and the Bible, and due to his privileged place as the “preacher”, he has all the answers and none of the humility required.

The vast traditional resources of Christianity can be manipulated to brainwash and lull a population into subservience, but those very resources are so vast that they contain the means whereby one can escape and challenge even the most subtle and elegant manipulation. With only an empty room, a loud voice and no accountability, there is nothing by which a congregant can transcend, can move beyond the preacher and his own prejudices. Though this is the same canonical scripture, it is an entirely different religion from most of Christianity. It is frankly very scary.

I do not think that the various Catholicisms are free of hateful preachers and prelates, because Holocaust denying Romans and homophobic “Anglicans” are rampant and painfully visible, and are hurting people by their thoughts, words and deeds every day. But Divinity can shine through the beauties and richness of the traditions to challenge the mind and soften the heart and make spiritual adults of those who care enough to pay attention, independent of preaching and interpretation and opinion.

I hope that this man is exposed for the Anti-Christ that he is, just as Fred Phelps and his ilk have been. Pure evil anti-shines from his face and spews from his mouth. I hope that the government is watching him and his followers (for they have not the freedom of congregants) very closely, there is no difference between him and the Taliban. None at all.

  7. Drew says

Well spoken, decent looking, I think he just needs a good lay to get that anger out. I’d like to help him get through this ordeal, but he has to pay for dinner.

  8. Disgusted American says

The saddest part of ALL this – is this Maniacis Preaching such Bigotry,Hateful and Bile while CHILDREN are in his audience……children,some..who could possibly be “LGBT”….or otherwise known as Future suicides..listening to this man!

  9. NorthoftheBorder says

not all christians are the same. I’m gay and a christian.. catholic actually.. do I listen to everything the Pope or the priest have to say? not really.. I make my own assumptions and interpret things in my own way.. still a christian though, and in no way even remotely like this doofus.

  10. JohnInManhattan says

NORTHOFTHEBORDER, why would you choose to associate yourself with a religion whose leader calls gay folks “INTRINSICALLY EVIL”? And that’s just for starters. You’re sick.

  11. John says

America is basically the Middle East with more McDonalds and Wal-Marts. It is a nation of loony religious fanatics. To those who have their heads in the sand about our so-called “moderate” country, consider this:

When the South African government introduced legislation to legalize same-sex marriage, opinion polls showed 75% of the public being against it. Seventy-five percent is no small number. There were protests and rallies. But when the religious right suggested a constitutional amendment to “protect” marriage, It totally backfired on them. The government was able to portray them as dangerous extremists. And opposition to marriage equality suddenly collasped.

You don’t change the constitution over trivial matters just because the Church says so. Americans don’t understand that concept because they’re, at heart, religious fanatics. They believe in the notion that they can turn the United States into the “Kingdom of Heaven.” They have more in common with the likes of Bin Laden and Ahmedinejad than they’d care to admit.

  12. FunMe says

Speaking of hell … now that, finally, this homophobic religous fanatic is getting attention, especially in the big web sites like Pam’s House Blend and Towleroad, there will be hell to pay.

    What a close case queen!

  13. FunMe says

This guy epitomizes a typical CHINO …

    Christian In Name Only.

Check him out when he was 17:

That haircute TOTALLY shows he is gay. And have you see his “wife”. Geez, some German woman who is just as much of a bigot/racist/homophobe like she is. Hope they expose them for the FRAUDS they both are!

    Poor children.

  14. Bart says

First off JohninManhattan, who are you to call anyone “sick” for following their religious/spiritual beliefs? That says far more about your own poor self image as a gay man who can’t stand up and be who you are without this second grade name calling. You need some self-image help. Seek counseling.

Secondly, we are making far more out of this wackadoodle than need be. Listen to the YouTube videos. This guy has like six people in his congregation and one or two heckle him! Even of his racist ilk no one believes this man is a man of God. Let him rant and rave in the desert like a hot gust of wind. That’s all the power he has. Clearly Christ has not given him any. And I’m certainly not going to give him any. He’s a clown. Laugh at him.

  15. Mike says

I wonder how many are in his congergation. I would think and hope the higher ups in the Baptist church would put a stop to this. It would be interesting to see footage of how many he addresses. FOX news will be picking him up soon to host a Sunday morning show. They have Huckabee doing a show. He perfect for the FOX news viewers.

  16. john says

Since hell doesn’t exist, and the closest thing we have to a “hell” is the world that these religious finatics create for the rest of us to have to live through…well his prayers for Obama to die and go to hell will be just one more thing that wont come to pass. Just a wind bag talking out of his ass and hoping that others will take him and his childish frustrations seriously.

  17. daivd in iowa says

Sunlight is the best disinfectant. The more media spotlights this kind of craziness and bigotry the more everyday people rethink their positions, and in the end we win.

And would it surprise no one if months from now Pastor Anderson is caught with his pants down or on his kness or both “helping” a member of his flock.

  18. Attmay says

Jesus would never pray for anyone to die and go to hell.

But I’m not Jesus, and I don’t believe in him either, so I’m going to pray for Steven Anderson to die and go to Hell. Soon.

  19. Contrarian says

Bart, thank you for the intelligent comment. This strange man in Arizona is no more a Christian than the avowed atheists and religion-haters who post here. It is likely his church is his own creation having no affiliation with any mainstream Baptist group ala the Phelps nutters.

Slightly off-topic but is that former beauty queen/model or whatever on that clip from MSNBC supposed to be a credible news anchor? No wonder I can’t stomach cable news.

  20. says

I don’t mind this ignorant S.O.B. destroying the reputation of the “Baptists”, as they don’t deserve much of a reputation after their support of slavery and segregation.
But as a devout promoter of Jesus of Nazareth, one of the greatest liberal clergymen of all time, I plead with with all of the so-called “Christians” like Steve Anderson to stop claiming to represent Jesus when they campaign against issues that Jesus said absolutely NOTHING, i.e. abortion, homosexuality and publicly supported religion.
See how very LIBERAL Jesus actually was at
    http://LiberalsLikeJesus.Org/Christlike.html (click on my name).

  21. Christopher says

American Christianity is so completely lost. Guys like this, they’re not Christian, they’re modern day Pharisees. They take a religion born out of love and compassion and turned it into a weapon to fuck over people they don’t like. Jesus, if he were to return to Earth, would be humiliated that all of this had been done in his name. Actually, what would Jesus do to these horrible people? I suspect it would make running the money changers out of the temple look like a picnic.

  22. Tyron says

Praying that someone will die has exactly the same value as praying that someone will live – NONE! As a kid I was always reprimanded if, when I got mad, I’d say “I wish you were dead”. Well, not a single one of those I “wished” dead ever died – or at least never died in close enough proximity to my wishing it that I could take the credit (or blame) for it. I love it when those who self-identify as Christian start on the hatred and bigotry rates because it is only further proof of their inability to even practice the beliefs of their own religion – thus voiding any credibility they might have. Keep on ranting Steven you’re looking like a real honest to goodness Christian there – Jesus would be so proud.
