Phyllis Schlafly Analysis: Gays Only 5 Percent of Attack on Marriage

Phyllis Schlafly hosted a "How to Take Back America" conference in St. Louis over the weekend.

Topics discussed included "How To Counter The Homosexual Extremist Movement," "How To Stop Socialism In Health Care" and "How To Recognize Living Under Nazis & Communists."

Who was there? "Among the prominent speakers who traveled to St. Louis for the conference were former Arkansas Gov. and GOP presidential candidate Mike Huckabee, Republican Reps. Tom McClintock, Tom Price, Steve King and Michele Bachmann, and 'Joe the Plumber,' aka Samuel Wurzelbacher."

Anyway, Schlafly weighed in on the marriage debate to a roomful of Christian extremists: "My analysis is that the gays are about five percent of the attack on marriage in this country and the feminists are 95 percent."

  1. Don't expect the narcissist to get better with age. By the time they are old they have pushed everyone who has ever tried to care about them away. Their narcissistic characteristics also seem to increase after the death of parents or loss of others that have exerted some type of control over them.

The narcissist ages without mercy and without grace. Her/His withered body and her/his overwrought mind betray her/him all at once. She/He stares with incredulity and rage at cruel mirrors. She/He refuses to accept her/his growing fallibility. She/He rebels against her/his decrepitude and mediocrity. Accustomed to being awe-inspiring and the recipient of adulation - the narcissist cannot countenance her/his social isolation and the pathetic figure that she/he cuts.

  2. That cunt geezer is still obsessed with the feminist movement as if it was still 1975 and the ERA was just about to become law. But then the entire GOP is living in the past.

  3. They want their men to go earn the money and come home to the wife baking cookies at home. Gays and feminists don't fit into that ... Hell, a woman who wants to get an education doesn't fit into that.

  4. ...and my analysis of Schlafly is that she is 5 percent lucid and 95 percent wack-job. More to the point, she is beyond relevance. As Glenda said to Dorothy, "She has no power over you..."

  5. It was men that loosened divorce laws in the sixties and seventies, thus rapidly increasing the rate of divorce. Feminists have largely pushed abortion rights, but this has little impact on families because most abortions are for unmarried women--what it does do, this is probably what she is thinking--is stop young couples from marrying because of accidental or unplanned pregnancies. Yes, she wants to see the return of the good old shotgun wedding. The social problems of unwed mothers is very well understood, but it is more a confluence of social trends than a vast conspiracy against marriage.

  7. Let's see. I'm gay AND a feminist. So, I guess that makes me a 100-percenter. Ms. Schlafley has been around since the 1950's, pushing her rather extremist world-view and she has been very effective. If anyone cares to remember, she almost single-handedly was responsible for the failure of the ERA (Equal Rights Amendment) to pass. In fact, it was the ERA that was one of the galvanizing issues for the right-wing in the 1970's, along with Roe v. Wade. Ms. Schlafly claimed that the ERA would lead to acceptance of homosexuality and homosexual marriage. She was wrong on the ERA (very sadly) and because of Ms. Schlafly, women still cannot be considered fully equal in American society. She still will not comment on her gay son, saying it's a private, family matter. She has been a formidable opponent for the LGBT community. She is still a large draw on the right-wing lecture circuit. You can dismiss her at your own risk. She is repugnant, there is no doubt about that. But, it cannot be denied that she has been very, very effective in her crusades against full, civil equality for women and for the LGBT community.

  9. As usual, thanks, Derek. They'll find any topic to use their favorite slur. What in the world would SARGON do if the subjects of the story were "old black people". He'd say, "don't use an ageist" slur against those niggers."
