Rep. Joe Wilson (R-SC) Calls Obama a Liar During Health Care Speech

Those of you watching the President's address on health care heard the word "lie!" shouted clearly from the Republican section of the joint session of Congress when Obama said that the reforms he is proposing wouldn't apply to illegal immigrants.

The disrespectful heckler was apparently Rep. Joe Wilson (R-SC). His Twitter is @CongJoeWilson.

  1. To gain respect, one has to give respect. The United States Of America is a great nation where there is freedom of speech and expression. Being given such privileges means one does not have to heckle the President of the United States at any time, especially at a moment when he is doing the work that is necessary for the well-being of all citizens of this great nation. Although this pathetic display of immaturity is nothing remotely close to an intelligent contribution, even the most intelligent contributions lose gravity when delivered by an imbecile. I wouldn't trust Joe Wilson to baby sit my 4 year old without embarrassing himself.

  3. Notice the moment that Rep. Wilson decided he could no longer contain himself...when Obama was talking about the lie that health insurance will be extended to undocumented workers. We all know that when people like Wilson hear immigrants, they aren't thinking of the tens of thousands of undocumented Canadians living in the US, they're thinking and being enraged by brown folks from down south. Racist no-class trash. That man is a US Congressman sitting in a joint session of Congress listening to the president, and he's acting like a goddamn drunken heckler after last call at the Laff Shack. He should be ashamed of himself.

  4. JT,

The fact to the matter is some of us are racist. And some of us have racist partners or spouses whom we are forced to tolerate for other reasons. But that shouldn't have any bearing on whether there's a right to marry whom you wish, have the same opportunities as everyone else, and so forth.

Whatever my feelings about racism in the LGBT community, I'm not about to bargain away fundamental principles of fairness over some perceived slights against my person. What I'm trying to say, perhaps inarticulately, is condemning protestors' racism against Obama and criticising his stance on gay rights are not incompatible notions. They stem from the same value system. In any case, we're jumping the gun a bit here.

We're discussing one of several possible outcomes. The event hasn't happened yet. Lets wait and see how it actually turns out.

  5. My first inclination was to demonstrate the same level of disrespect with Rep Wilson - as he did towards THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Unlike him, I have learned a tremendous amount from observing the manner in which President Obama handles opposition and those with different opinions. He knows how to disagree without attacking. Rep. Wilson demonstrated an animal-like instinct (No sense of control or higher level of thinking) and do not deserve the right or privilege to represent an entire state of Americans. His constituents should require him to immediately step down from office. People around the world have now witnessed his level of disrespect for the highest office in our country. He is a monumental disgrace to our country. RESIGN NOW, Rep Wilson!!!

  6. Apparently the wackos in the "town halls" have set the tone for Republican behavior in Congress now. Let's hope they don't copy ALL their behavior.

  7. steph-one of the biggest reasons, if not THE biggest reason the debt climbed so rapidly, is that we now have ONE SET OF BOOKS FOR THE BUDGET. Bush NEVER put those 2 pesky wars onto the actual budget. he always called for a supplemental, or a second set of books in reality. Obama has culled EVERYTHING down to the REAL budget, and showed the USA exactly what all of those tax cuts for the rich, the wars etc have done to our country. Obama is the man that is an adult in the house and not a snake-oil salesman.

and personally, far left liberal commie pinko that i am, i DO think that insurance and healthcare should be extended to EVERYONE that helps in the country and that INCLUDES your so-called illegal aliens. they do the work that none of you bastard sociopathic white fucks will do. they deserve to be able to have a goddam physical and dental care.

and so do i, and i'm the last of my line that came to the USA in the 1700s. i haven't had insurance for 7 years now.

    so screw you conservative fucks.

  8. oh, and i'm white and ashamed of my ilk 95% of the time. we treat people like commodities and not fellow human beings. i hope we have a black president for the next 200 years. i think we should actually make it illegal for a white person to even hold an office or have a say in ANYTHING for the next 200 years.

  10. where are my comments? they were here now they're gone. please don't tell me they were too radical for Towleroad while you're posting comments calling Obama a socialist pig?!?!?!?

  11. You have to love the Republican party...they are falling apart before our eyes. The Republicans are reverting back to one of their own, revitalizing McCarthyism, name calling, etc. Watch out, your neighbor might be a socialist!!! LOL Now an elected official calling the President a liar during a joint session of Congress speech. Totally disrespectful. Of course what do you expect, the Republican's have no leadership.

The funniest part was the Republican rebuttal afterwards, where they mentioned fiscal responsibility - LOL. Who the heck got us into the fiscal mess in the first place? Who was President the last 8 years? Who controlled the Senate for 10 of the last 12 years? What a bunch of hypocrites.

  13. As an addendum to my previous post, if I were a South Carolinian, I would bow my head in disgrace as their Republican's continue to make a spectacle of themselves..first their Governor, now a Congressman. I don't think South Carolina wants to be put in the spotlight like this.

  14. Maybe Rep. Wilson was referring to the other lies Obama told? Like the lies about repealing DOMA and DADT, that they were "priorities"?

I was calling Obama a liar back in 2007, but did y'all listen? Nooooooo. You went and bowed at his feet while our rights were threatened in California. Now our rights are still threatened everywhere, and he's doing nothing to advance them, like he said he would. Plus he continuously panders to Jesus freaks and terrorist states where homosexuality is punishable by DEATH.

Now we've got people playing the race card, accusing Obama's opponents of racism while calling for the disenfranchisement of the white race. You've got to love the cognitive dissonance on display there. I got news for you, the race card is maxed out.

And calling for Rep. Wilson's impeachment and deportation? The man is hardly another Preston Brooks. Stay classy, Towleroad!

We need more people on the floor of Congress to call out the "Democratic" liars for what they really are. I'd say the fact that 10% of this country is disenfranchised and has been since 7/4/1776 is much more important than any other issue affecting Americans.

  16. The House is certainly not the proper forum for accosting the Head of State. And this happened during an important policy speech no less.

If this were Britain or Canada, Joe Wilson would've escorted out of the chamber by the Sargeant-at-Arms by order of the Speaker. And when the regular sitting resumes tomorrow, he'd probably be suspended from the service of the House for a few weeks as well.

And it isn't just other countries. Such behavior would've never been tolerated under the Republicans either. And the fact that Pelosi didn't do anything - except give him a disapproving look - does not reflect well on her. The primary duty of the Speaker is maintain the decorum and authority of the institution. By allowing a member of Congress to heckle and hold up an offensive sign in front of the President of the United States without consequence, Pelosi has reinforced the belief that the Democrats simply don't have the balls to rule. And that America is a lawless and uncivilized nation.

Wilson's behavior was disgraceful. That he'll get away with it too just compounds our national shame.

  17. I am so tired of the 'socialism!' outbursts. So, in that case, let's eliminate Social Security, Medicare, and the VA medical system, just to name a few. Or maybe these programs should be eliminated for those who oppose 'socialism' -- then we'll see what happens.

As a person in the medical field who deals with insurance companies on a daily basis, all I can is that the state of health care management in this country is a chaotic mess.

  19. K,

Or the defense contracts that constitute half of the federal budget. Building warships, planes, and tanks we don't need and will never use in the name of "protecting jobs." The Republicans like socialism just fine when it suits their purposes.

  20. Et tu Andy? I love you and this site but this is your headline of a truly moving speech? Did you watch it? When he was speaking about Ted Kennedy, it brought tears to my eyes.

Yes, you shld cover this but as a small side note. This is exactly what the mainstream media did by covering the ones who yell loudest instead of focusing on the real issue.

  25. Attmay : They're all losing it on here. Their desperation with the disappointment in Obama is so palpable that that's all they have to fall back on: scream "racist!" at anybody who criticizes the President. I've already said it : these gay suckups are going to be calling anybody who attends the Equality March a racist too, mark my words.
