Patrick Murphy to Hold Special Order Hour on 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell'

Rep. Patrick Murphy (D-PA) will hold a special order hour on the floor of the House today  to speak about the negative impact of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" and the need to repeal it, according to his office"

Murphy "Congressman Murphy is the lead sponsor of H.R. 1283, the Military Readiness Enhancement Act, a bill that would replace DADT with a policy of nondiscrimination throughout every branch of the services. There are currently 176 cosponsors on the bill. Rep. Murphy will be joined by a number of his colleagues on the floor of the House. Special order speeches allow Members of the House of Representatives to speak on any topic they wish for periods of time reserved in advance."

Murphy's speech is scheduled to take place around 9pm (and will be broadcast via C-SPAN) but the time is subject to change.

Murphy, an Iraq war vet, took the lead in advancing legislation to repeal the ban when Rep. Ellen Tauscher moved to a position at the State Dept.

Towleroad readers may also remember Murphy's thrashing of the anti-gay Center for Military Readiness' Elaine Donnelly at hearings before the House Armed Services Committee in July 2008. If not, I've re-posted it, AFTER THE  JUMP...

  1. Thanks, Andy, for the heads up on this. I will definitely watch. Murphy deserves our support.

  2. Murphy is well-spoken, well-versed, and passionate about this issue. I'm sure he will present a clear and compelling argument.

Watching him (again) at the hearing video I was reminded how wonderfully he drew the distinction between orientation and behavior -- which pretty much blows away 99% of the other side's talking points.

    Love this guy!

  3. BRAVO for Murphy! But he still needs OUR help in convincing more of his colleagues to support his bill AND get the Senate to even INTRODUCE one. ....And you know who to get off his ass. Make no mistake: ending DADT is stuck deep in a ditch and it's going to take a lot more that tonight to pull it out before hundreds more like Lt. Dan Choi are shit-canned!

Join Dan and Anthony Woods and Eric Alva and Alex Nicholson and Frank Kameny and Troy Perry and David Mixer et al., at a DADT Protest & Memorial Service for Leonard Matlovich at 2 pm this Saturday in DC's Congressional Cemetery, 1801 E Street SE at Potomac Avenue. [Within walking distance of Potomac Ave & Stadium-Armory DC Metro stations.]

    Thank you.

  4. Further proof of deep ditch DADT repeal is in:

Remember that Pentagon publication last week with an article dissing DADT? Well, Capt. John Kirby, the spokesman for Chair of the Joint Chiefs of Homohatred Adm. Mike Mullen has released this disclaimer:

"Broadly speaking, it is the chairman's magazine, and he wants it to be a forum for open debate and discussion for issues in the military writ large. But there was no intention with the publication of this article to send any subliminal message to the force or the country about Don't Ask, Don't Tell."

Are you tired of all this bullshit yet? If not, why not?
