Charlie Crist Supports Keeping Gay Servicemembers Closeted

Florida Governor Charlie Crist, who was outed in the Kirby Dick documentary Outrage, supports keeping the military's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy:

The St. Petersburg Times reports: Crist "Gov. Charlie Crist, a Republican candidate for U.S. Senate, does not support abolishing the 'don't ask, don't tell' policy affecting gays and lesbians in the military. The 1993 policy was intended to be a political compromise that let gay men and women serve so long as they stayed silent about their sexuality. But President Obama and military brass say it is time to end the discrimination all together.

Crist disagrees. 'We are a nation at war. The governor believes the current policy has worked, and there is no need to make changes,' campaign spokeswoman Amanda Henneberg said."

Or, Crist just leads by example.

Crist is facing a serious challenge from Marco Rubio; he’s trying to shore up his conservative credentials before his campaign tailspins. It’s pathetic, but it’s as predictable as Giuliani’s anti-gay turn during the primaries.

  2. Bill says

Crist has become so comfortable in the closet that he wants lots and lots of military dudes in that closet with him.

I’m so sick of this “we are a nation at war” excuse. The military has all sorts of personnel-related issues they have to deal with during times or war or peace. If we weren’t at war, their excuse would be “we’re at peace so it’s not necessary.”

I’m holding out the hope that one reason he has fallen off a cliff in the polls is that people have figured out he’s a phony. If he lies about one important thing he’ll lie about many important things. Maybe the people of Florida have figured out that they don’t know who he is.

That would be ironic, because Charlie doesn’t seem to know who he is either.

As a Floridian, I am SO SICK of Charlie Crist! He is an absolute joke of a Governor and as a closteted gay man, he continues to prove the thesis presented in Outrage. I pray Floridians get him OUT of the Governor’s mansion and deny him a seat in the Senate. He is garbage.

  6. Never Voting Democrat Again says

My response to this headline is: So what? Don’t we expect this shit from Republicans? Is this newsworthy? What next? “The Sky Is Blue”? “Children Don’t Like Eating Their Vegetables”? Why not write stories on Democrats who are against the repeal of DADT, or does this counter the mythology that Democrats are pro-gay?

“Why not write stories on Democrats who are against the repeal of DADT, or does this counter the mythology that Democrats are pro-gay?”

    I’m sorry, but…

what the hell are you talking about?

Every second story on Towleroad is a shot against Obama and/or the Democrats over not pushing gay rights hard enough.

Honestly, there are a number of criticisms to make about Towleroad; going soft on the Dems is not one of them.

he’s such a loathsome slime bag

how he can manage to retain political office with all of his skeletons astounds me

I don’t understand why he would bother to even offer an opinion as there are a lot of Republicans who are taking the easy and appropriate way out. Just say I would like to leave that up to the military leadership; this is good for us as it looks like the general consensus from current and past bigwigs in the military is to support elimination of DADT.

As a fiscal conservative I am encouraged to see more and more Republicans coming to the center on some social issues.
