Magician James 'The Amazing' Randi: I'm Gay
Magician James Randi, known as 'The Amazing Randi' to magic lovers and a frequent guest on the old Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, came out of the closet yesterday in a statement on his website:
"Well, here goes. I really resent the term, but I use it because it’s recognized and accepted.
I’m gay.
From some seventy years of personal experience, I can tell you that there’s not much “gay” about being homosexual. For the first twenty years of my life, I had to live in the shadows, in a culture that was — at least outwardly — totally hostile to any hint of that variation of life-style. At no time did I choose to adopt any protective coloration, though; my cultivation of an abundant beard was not at all a deception, but part of my costume as a conjuror.
Gradually, the general attitude that I’d perceived around me began to change, and presently I find that there has emerged a distinctly healthy acceptance of different social styles of living — except, of course, in cultures that live in constant and abject fear of divine retribution for infractions found in the various Holy Books… In another two decades, I’m confident that young people will find themselves in a vastly improved atmosphere of acceptance."
Randi was prompted to come out after seeing the film Milk:
"This declaration of mine was prompted just last week by seeing an excellent film — starring Sean Penn — that told the story of politician Harvey Milk, the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in California. I’m in excellent company: Barney Frank, Oscar Wilde, Stephen Fry, Ellen DeGeneres, Rachel Maddow, are just a few of those who were in my thoughts as I pressed the key that placed this on Swift and before the whole world…"

Randi is a true hero who has been a voice of reason and sanity for decades. It's unfortunate that it has taken so long for this well-respected man to come out publicly, though I wouldn't be surprised if he thought of it as something that would merely distract from his overall life's work of promoting reason and science.
Ad Randi noted, religiously inspired fear does much harm to gays across the world, and it is this sort of irrationality that he has fought throughout his life. Hopefully, he will have many years ahead of him of continuing the fight.

What an excellent statement.

If only it had happened before he turned into a global warming denialist crackpot ( http://scienceblogs.com/pharyngula/2009/12/say_it_aint_so_randi.php ), it might have been a net positive for the gays.
As it is, who wants to take bets on the next eccentric celebrity bachelor who'll come limping out of the closet as they approach their 80th birthday? The smart money is on Ralph Nader.

@moron -- You should continue reading the controversy surrounding Randi's remarks, including the statements he made after his original post when he heard back from the skeptical community. He backtracked significantly, acknowledging the facts presented to him by those with expertise in the subject. He also noted that he should have made more clear in his original statement that he was drafting his comments from a point of substantial ignorance on the subject.
So, ease up on the name-calling in this case. While his original post was to a certain extent poorly worded and led to quite the kerfuffle in his community, the story only begins shortly before that post on Pharyngula and ended quite a bit later.

it would be cooler if they came out when they were young and it wouldn't look like a career move for an fading career....

We might have guess this earlier had his name been 'The Fabulous Randi'.

LOL environmentalism is a religion, with its adherents carrying on like they are worshiping a god and not brooking ANY dissent from dogma. So I can understand why Randi voiced skepticism about it.
It would be nice if we could return to peer-reviewed science, and real arguments based on evidence, instead of freaks weeping for Mother Gaia if you voice even a peep of disagreement.
PS It's "climate change" not "global warming".

I've always admired him as being highly intelligent and well-spoken in his various media appearances and writings. Perhaps he can now bring some of his skills to bear on the pressing social issues of the day. At any rate, welcome Randi, and your complimentary toaster should "appear" shortly.

It took him this long to see the movie Milk?

Miracle buster! Of course, when the epistemic prescription is that one should affirm to a miracle (event contrary to the laws of nature) only if its denial would require a more improbable miracle (hume's maxim), he'd have to try really hard to screw up...
And this is one of the rare cases where I can say unequivocally that his coming out had nothing to do with kickstarting a stalled career--only someone unfamiliar with his career would say that.

Fortunately he is more than a mere celebrity, but proponent of reason and empiricism across the board (much as Carl Sagan was, though perhaps more so because Sagan was very political). We don't talk about major scientists or proponents of science coming out the closet much, but it would help a great deal.

I'm way more shocked that he was in the closet.

HAHA! 'The Fabulous Randi'! Good one, good one! This certainly is not a career enhancing move - he's eighty! Aside from which, he's a film star.
As our country struggles to come out for main stream acceptance it's interesting to see how a generation of our politely "just never married" aging aunts and uncles are adjusting. I have a great aunt; very Catholic, never married. I even wonder if she had a language for her feelings, let alone a political stance. It is profoundly sad (to me) to see generations of us who have lived such deeply closeted, disenfranchised lives. Good for Randi!

I certainly appreciate the irony. On all levels.

What an ass. Who is this jerk? He "resents the term" gay?
Posted by: Toddy | Mar 22, 2010 2:14:36 PM
I like the way he busts those psychic frauds (like that gay charlatan, James Van Praagh). He could raise his standards about the gays on his mind while he types though. Barney Fudd? Rachel Maddow..? She's okay, but.. Why not Solon, Plato, Alexander, Francis Bacon, DaVinci, Turing and the othes who actually changed world history?

Randi, it's called a "LIFE" not a lifestyle.
Posted by: TampaZeke | Mar 22, 2010 2:32:02 PM
i guess it's not surprising that someone who's been completely disconnected from the community for eighty years would use an insulting buzz word used by our enemies ("lifestyle").
i'm glad that he's finally taken this initial step, but i hope he realizes that self-acceptance and coming out are ongoing processes.

The man's 81 years old, so his faux pas is to be expected. His retraction on climate change data is evidence that he's at least rational. But at the same, you must concur that the extreme end of the climate change debate is a bit hysterical. Of course, that's required to make moderate change in average people. Equilibrium...must be pursued and preserved at all cost.

which closet at the Magic Castle was he hiding in? LOL
And I think he is MILKING it for all it is worth!

@scammerk,
Thanks for the laugh. I thought the same thing.

Wow, you cynical bitches should shut the fuck up. James Randi is an important voice for rationality (see here: http://www.randi.org/site/), and you should be applauding his efforts to 'come out,' not denigrating the man like a bunch of screeching harpies. What the hell is the matter with you?
Posted by: Jordan | Mar 22, 2010 8:58:51 PM
An injured little boy, cleverly makes a living and a life or "life-style" out of hiding things and revealing only what he chooses and of bringing others down, in a manner oddly identical to the self righteous religious zealot. On behalf of the non-religion religion of Rational Science, the true rationality of which he could not find if it bit him in the ass. Even as he is all ass. At the end of life doing an honest thing, albeit COMPLETELY OBVIOUS. I am happy for him, but only a little given the context. The only thing "Amazing" about this is that it's taken so long. He's lived in retiredqueenville Ft. Lauderdale for decades. I would be *amazed* if a rent boy was not about to out him. It's too bad he will be remembered more as an asshole than for his great skill and professionalism as a magician - again, not "amazing" but all too common.

@ Toddy: This "jerk' is someone who could make you look like a total fool in a New York minute. Actually, you look like a fool already as you couldn't take the time to Google his name? Ignorance is no excuse for a nasty comment.
I'm very happy for him. I think some people here can't conceive what it takes to come out for a man born in 1928. And, no, I was not born then, but am familiar with his work, which extends far beyond a career in magic, to advocacy for science and rationality in our society. He has always been on our side.
Jordan is correct - Randi has been an important voice in our culture. If you don't know who he is - Google him!
@ alan brickman - hon, what's wrong with you? Think, dammit, think!
@jamesr - WTF? Randi will be remembered long after you are *totally* forgotten. Or am I wrong? Tell us about your career.
