Nancy Pelosi Declares Health Care Public Option Dead

Pelosi Via Talking Points Memo:

"We're talking about something that's not going to be part of the legislation. I'm quite sad that a public option isn't in there. But it isn't a case of it's not in there because the Senate is whipping against it. It's not in there because they don't have the votes to have it in there. We had it. We wanted it. They didn't have it. It's not in the reconciliation."

  1. Brian in Texas says

Well, the final bill will still be a HUGE step in the right direction. A public option can be added later. Civil Rights legislation didn’t come in one fell swoop, it took several years and several different bills.

  2. CJ says

This alarms me. As someone who has been for reform, this “reform” is simply a way to get contracts for the health insurance companies for every American. What about lowering rates by getting RID of the bloated b.s. that is the healthcare and pharmaceutical administrations control over actual healthcare? How about reigning in the ridiculous lawsuits that have resulted in the exorbitant malpractice insurance rates? Oh, instead, let’s just give the companies a free-for-all with healthcare. I never thought in a MILLION years that I would ever state this as I voted for Obama and healthcare reform, but this isn’t reform. This is simply capitalism and a “sure thing” for the insurance companies. FOR SHAME.

  3. John says

Schumer says there are 53 votes for it in the Senate. Sanders tells us he’s ready to introduce a public option amendment during reconciliation. Then Pelosi and the White House comes out and assures us there aren’t enough votes for it. I do not get this goddamn Democratic Party. It is as if these people want to look as incompetent and incapable of governing as possible. They could not look more disorganized, more pathetic, more off message — if they were doing it on purpose.

What the hell is wrong with these people?

Get a clear message and stick to it!

  4. New jersey girl says

Not getting a real healthcare bill passed is a failure of Obama administration. All that political capital just flushed away proves his icompetence.

But there is a silver lining. The Health Care bill did authorize fines and jail-time for people who did not buy the mandated insurance coverage. This is no republican lie. It was in the bill.

Ironically, if you were put in jail for failure to pay you would end up getting…

    ..wait for it…

    Free Health Care in Jail.

    Now go figure!

  5. Mike says

Yep, I agree the democrats have been grossly incompetent in pushing through legislation and can’t even keep their stories straight. The republicans are evil hypocrites but at least they stick together and can keep their stories straight! Bottom line, Obama has screwed this up royally. If he had come out strongly for a public option it would have been done by now – same for DADT. He is either a wimp, grossly naive or lied about his agenda for change. I wish Hillary would have won!

  6. FunMe says

“We don’t have the votes” … yeah whatever.

When the Democrats (who I have helped so much in previous elections) lose …

    I will simply tell them:

“Sorry you lost. You just didn’t have the votes”

  7. wtf says

guess I’m going to jail since I don’t have health care because I can no longer afford it and there’s no public option. Guess I’ll see if I can sleep on someone’s couch in Canada.

  8. MikeMick says

I don’t know who sucks worse, the Republicans or the Democrats. The Republicans are evil and ignorant but the Democrats are cowardly and inept. What a fucking choice.

  9. chasmader says

The problem with this whole process has been that the Dems representing us in the Senate are to weak and to nice. They need to take a page from the Repubs and just ram it through.

Come on folks (with the exception of Bernie Sanders) grow a pair for Christ’s sake!

  10. jamal49 says

    Dear Nancy Pelosi:

    Go Fuck Yourself!

You are the WORST Speaker of the House EVER. Harry Reid is the WORST Senate Majority Leader EVER.

Between the two of you and your breathtaking incompetence, the “health-care” bill you think will pass will be soundly defeated.

No public option? Then, NO health-care “reform”. And, I promise you, Fancy Nancy, I’ll do everything in my power to make sure that you never get reelected to the House.

  11. Roger says

The platform of the Democratic Party matches my values and aspirations much more closely than that of the Republican Party ever could, but our Democratic leadership in Washington never fails to disappoint. With such overwhelming Democratic majorities in both chambers of Congress, it is infuriating to see such milequtoast, ineffectual leadership and incessant pleas for “bipartisanship” with a completely obsinate minority party.

If Bush were still in the White House and had his ~52% majorities in Congress, and HCR was a part of the Republican platform, this shit would have been wrapped up last Summer.

As someone said upthread, choosing between the Reps and the Dems is like choosing between evil and cowardice. What a fucking choice indeed.

  12. 24play says

Anyone who was still holding out hope that a public option would be included in reform is not a member of the reality-based community.

The chances for a strong public option died last July in Henry Waxman’s committee in the House. And any chance for a weak one died las fall at the hands of Joe Lieberman.

Grow up, denizens of the loony left. To be progressive means to appreciate that progress usually happens in increments—especially in today’s Congress.

  13. alguien says

at this point even progressives like markos moulitsas and ed schultz are arguing to just get the effing thing passed.

one of the most salient points made in all of this is that so many of the most aggressive advocates for public option or no bill at all are middle class folks (your’s truly included) who have employer-provided insurance and can afford to wait until the “perfect bill” is enacted.

unfortunately, that strategy doesn’t help the 45 million or so who desperatly need healthcare. enactment of this bill will provide access to around 30 million.

once it’s passed improvements can be made but until it’s on the books virtually EVERYTHING is up in the air.

  14. Nick says

My heart goes out to those that really believe BHO and NP and HR were going to be any different. Continue to fight for what you believe in.
I haven’t been able to stomach the Democratic Party for years because they are so spineless. For Progressives -we have no real option in this country.

  15. ravewulf says

LIAR. If you wanted it you would have put it in and gotten the votes easily. But, of course, your health insurance lobbyist buddies have bought you all so you say that you “regret” that you “don’t have the votes. Tch. Yeah, right. We’re not stupid.

  16. CJ says

The two party system has ruined this nations socio-political topography. There needs to be another strong third party for the people of the people. Until that day comes, the two party system will continue to pit us against one another, further driving a wedge between us. The DIS-United States of America.

  17. Bart says

I guess I’m a Republican because I am so against this health care bill because it no longer has a public option. Basically this bill reads: You Must Buy Insurance From A Conglomerate Who Will Decide Your Health Care. Wow, thanks. Frankly, as much as no one likes the government running their lives, I trust them over an insurance company.

  18. nohope says

I don’t look at the Democratic Party as too weak, nice, cowardly, or spineless. They have told their supporters, the people who voted them into Congress, SCREW YOU!! We know you want it, we have the majority in both houses but we just are not going to pass what you want. We are going to pass what is in the best interest for the insurance industry and have some smoke and mirrors to make it look like we are trying to help the American people. This bill is going to do nothing but put billions of dollars into the pockets of the insurance companies.

We were never going to a public option, because they didn’t want one. If they did, they would have pushed harder for single payer and settled on the public option. So they lose some seats in the next election, BIG DEAL. Most of the major players will still retain their seats, and if they don’t they have jobs lined up with the major corporations they have been voting for over the years.

There will never be real reform in this country until We The People wake up and realize our two party system is just an illusion. We have a one party system and everything that is done is in the best interest of the corporations.

  19. Mike O. says

    Dear Mrs, Pelosi,

You can take the healthcare bill and ram it up your ass. I hope the next majority buries this bill in the trash heap of history.

Go fuck yourself, you arrogant bitch!

  20. LincolnLounger says

Hopefully, this disgusting bill will soon make Mrs. Pelosi the Minority Leader and cripple the remnants of the Obama mistake.

  21. jacksmith says

I’M PROUD OF YOU LABOR!. Keep standing up. The lives and health of all the American people and the World are in serious jeopardy.

Further, unemployment healthcare benefits are critically needed. But they should be provided through the Medicare program at cost, less the 65% government premium subsidy provided now to private for profit health insurance.

Congress should stop wasting hundreds of millions of dollars of taxpayer money on private for profit health insurance subsidies. Subsidies that cost the taxpayer 10x as much or more than Medicare does. Private for profit health insurance plans cost more. But provide dangerous and poorer quality patient care.

It’s over. Tell congress to get the healthcare Merchants of death and injury out of the American peoples lives for good. 2010 is about THE PUBLIC OPTION!

And that CORRUPT! UNDEMOCRATIC! filibuster must GO! NOW!

John Garamendi – The Public Option

I want to commend all of you for working so hard and being so strong at helping the whitehouse and congress begin to address our U.S. and Global healthcare crisis. You have been AWESOME! my fellow Americans and peoples of the World. America and the World is better and safer for it. My greatest pride is the knowledge that I am one of you. And that you really get it. You really understand the importance of it all.

There are some potentially very good things in the healthcare legislation. Especially with the reconciliation fix’s. The Democrats, Bernie Sanders and the Whitehouse did a GREAT! job of fighting to produce the best healthcare legislation that they could. They have earned all our strong support. And we should give it to them.

But it was your relentless pressure and hard work that made the difference. Whatever good comes from this healthcare legislation, America and the peoples of the World will have each of you to thank. You were smart, creative, courageous and relentless. You fought together for the best legislation possible. And when you had to, you fought alone. No matter who stumbled and fell you continued to push and forge ahead. Fighting for the lives and health of the American people and the World. YOU SHOULD BE PROUD OF YOUR-SELVES :-)

It may come to pass that future generations will look back on us and say that we were ALL Americas Greatest Generations. And that healthcare reform was our finest hour. You should be proud of our leaders President Obama, Speaker Pelosi, Majority Leader Reid and the many other Democratic and independent fighters for the people in congress. They proved them-self worthy of the leadership of a GREAT! PEOPLE.

But we are not done yet. This was just the beginning of healthcare reform, not the end. WE THE PEOPLE OF THE UNITED STATES, ARE NOT! divided on healthcare legislation. The vast majority of you have been consistently crystal clear that this legislation does not go far enough. You want a strong Government-run Public Option CHOICE!! available to everyone on day one. And you want it NOW!

WE THE PEOPLE have been crystal clear that we want an end to dependence on for-profit healthcare and the for-profit proxies called private for non-profit healthcare. The American people want the CHOICE! of a strong Government-run Public Option to replace their need or dependence on healthcare providers whose primary motivation is profit. Rather than providing the highest quality, easiest accessible and most affordable medically necessary healthcare possible. This is what the rest of the developed World has. And the American people want it too. They want healthcare ASSURANCE! Not, for-profit health insurance. And they want it NOW!

Now is the time to continue the push for a strong Government-run Public Option CHOICE! available to everyone that wants it on day one. Rationally it’s clear what we have to do to get this done. SUPPORT THE DEMOCRATS that supported you with a Public Option choice, and REMOVE as many republicans as you can. Not one republican in congress was willing to step across the isle to support a strong Government-run Public Option CHOICE!! available to everyone on day one. NOT ONE! Let no candidate prevail this November that does not support a Strong Government-run Public Option.

47,000 AMERICANS die each year from lack of healthcare. 120,000 die from treatable illness that don’t die in other developed countries. Hundreds of thousands of you are dieing from medical accidents in a rush to profit. And Millions of you are injured. Millions more are driven into bankruptcy. All for the privilege of paying two to three times as much as any other people in the developed world for healthcare. HOGWASH!

Additionally, tens of thousands of you and your children were killed and millions sickened and injured from a terror attack with H1N1 (swine flu). Released on the American people and the World by the for-profit healthcare industry. All in an attempt to panic and frighten you into accepting the oxymoronic criminal enterprise of private for-profit healthcare (The most costly, deadly, dangerous, and disgraceful product sold in America). H1N1 is still sickening people and killing them. Especially children, the young and the middle aged. And there will be a third wave. These are the terrorist you need to worry about the most. Even the so-called international terrorist would not do something so INSANE! But greed driven medical profiteers would and did.

Apparently as far as republicans in GOVERNMENT are concerned, YOU! my fellow Americans – CAN JUST DROP DEAD! Including their own family members. Fools!… Hundreds of thousands of you, and possibly millions of you will die from the long-term effects of your infection and poisoning with H1N1.

So my fellow Human Beings. Rest-up, Take good care of the basics (Balanced nutrition, hydration, exercise, rest and POSITIVE emotional supports). Then wade back into the FIGHT! for a strong Government-run Public Option CHOICE! available to everyone on day one. Drug re-importation, Abolishment or strong restrictions on patents for biologic and prescription drugs. And government controlled and negotiated drug and medical cost. You must take back control of your healthcare system from the Medical Industrial Complex. You MUST do it NOW! This is a matter of National and Global security. There can be NO MORE EXCUSES.

God Bless You My Fellow Human Beings. I’m glad to know of you. And proud to be one of you.

See you on the battle field.
