Reports of Second Iceland Volcanic Eruption False

Iceland

Uh oh. Hekla is the volcano indicated by the purple pin. Eyjafjallajökull is the red pin. Katla, the really scary one, is the big white splotch just to the east of the red pin.

UPDATE: It's apparently a false alarm. An Icelandic Broadcasting Service camera was pointed at Eyjafjallajökull but it was labeled Hekla. MSNBC picked up the breaking news item.

  1. Hekla is Iceland's most active volcano, so it shouldn't be too much of a problem.

Kata is the one that we want to worry about.
Every time Eyjafjallajokull has erupted, it has awoken Katla, which is 4x more powerful. Last eruption, 1860 something?

  2. Apparently someone is placing too much stock in twitter. One of the Hekla webcams was repositioned recently to point toward the current activity. Someone apparently saw it and tweeted that Hekla was erupting. Looks like MSNBC might have picked it up without checking it.

This might just be a twitter rumor that has become a "fact".

  3. Katla erupted Christmas 1821-1823 and NOT 1860.

  5. Wow, the rumor was even published as a fact on a Dutch news site.. Right after a positive outcome of the press conference that said that the sky was clear again to start flying. I was shocked to read about the Hakla thing since I am awaiting my flight to Jordan and thought for a moment that the world was just too unfair. ^.^
After googleling I found this article on your site and I immediately e-mailed the Dutch website that they were unneccessarily giving people heart attacks. Crazy >.< Next time, first check if rumors like that are based on actual facts, please!!!
    Have a nice day, gentlemen!
