Florida Church Plans Protest of Gay Gainesville Mayor Craig Lowe

Nohomomayor

The Dove World Outreach Center, a church in Gainesville, Florida is planning a protest outside City Hall on August 2 from 12-2 against Mayor Craig Lowe.

Why? Because he's gay.

The group writes, on its website

"What is homosexuality? Detestable, indecent, wicked, offensive, perverted, shameful, unnatural, degrading, impure, futile, foolish, godless, dishonorable, a lie...We protest sexual perversion because the Bible protests it. Family, community and national leaders should also protest it, stay away from it, flee from it. What is acceptable to today's leadership becomes acceptable to tomorrow's society. We, as Christians, will fight for the truth of the Word of God. When Jesus came, he no longer supported the death penalty for these sins, but the wickedness of the acts remain wicked and a serious problem for society."

Lowe was elected mayor in April despite a vicious anti-gay campaign by the same church.

  1. Wow - these people are in the stone age. And talk about religious intolerance....their book "Island Is of the Devil" is really strange.

  3. They forgot a few adjectives.

"Homosexuality is a lie" is funny though.

"THE CAKE IS A LIE! THE CAKE IS A LIE! THERE IS NO CAKE!"

How do people like them function on a day to day basis?

  4. So much for separation of church and state.

  5. Their statement only proves the severe Christian condition found in so many churches today: the complete and utter separation of church and intelligence.

  6. These are the same people who carried signs and pamphlets saying "Islam is of the Devil" about a year ago. I ran into one of them when they were picketing on the University of Florida campus. All of them women, most of them had babies in strollers. She handed me a pamphlet and asked if I had heard of her church, and I told her I had. She asked me what I thought and I told her I thought she had a fat pussy. For what it's worth, most other congregations around here condemn them as lunatics.

  7. Wow, that's a whole bunch of adjectives in one sentence.

Statements like that make me want to burn a bible. (Which obviously I wouldn't do).

  8. These people don't have the foggiest clue what it means to be Christian, do they? The bible doesn't give people permission to spew hatred toward people. You'd think these God-lovin' religious folk would get that simple idea.

  9. They will kill that man, in Jesus name. What a bunch of sociopaths.

  10. if this is a prime example of christains god really has to be a comic because all they do is hate. it is time for everybody to remember this country is based on freedom for everybody not just for some. if these people don't like the mayor work at election time or move the majority voted. they should take there narrow minds elsewhere

  11. Why wouldn't you burn a bible? If it's because it's a boring waste of time, yeah...but if it's because of the offense you'd generate, fuck you.

  12. Oh yes, david in houston, they don't have the foggiest idear! Maybe it's up to you to clear away the cobwebs of their confusion? No true scotsman fallacy....abounds amongst believers who claim to the same faith, yet "disagree". But it does prove that the common trait between progay christians and the vast majority of them (antigay christians) is stupid (w/ respect to faith).

  13. This church is full of scum.

  14. Of course, Islam is no more "of the devil" than xianity. Both are Abrahamic and both hold Jesus as prophet.

  15. islam does more harm to people than christianity, worldwide. Of course, christianity is a horrible faith that needs to be extinguished through reason and the choice to affirm being a good person and rational. But you can't compare christian nations like the u.s. NOW to, say, muslim countries like iran in terms of freedoms to its citizens. Christianity in the western world has been beaten back by secular, enlightenment values for centuries (and it's still happening, as the meme is evolving to protect itself by using people like this as checker pieces--because it ain't chess!). Islam is the worst religion on the planet right now in terms of its size and the amount of harm it causes. The problem is that islam doesn't have centuries for enlightened secular values to corrode its toxicity given the kinds of weapons we have today and our unparalleled power to cause harm...something needs to speed up the process.

  16. Let them do it. Yet another public display of Christianity's dark side. Another nail in the coffin.

  17. Tank, you are 100% right. I often forget (and others refuse to admit) how bad Islam really is, mostly because I live in the United States and Christianity is in power. But I would rather suffer 1000 church protests than endure the injustices perpetrated by Islam.

This doesn't mean, of course, that Christianity has any sort of moral superiority over any other religion. We've all seen the worst of what Christianity has to offer, and it's just as bad as the worst of Islam. The only difference is that when Christianity had free reign to do as it pleased, the technology available to Muslims today was not around. Christianity has been forced to offer itself as a peaceful, loving alternative to secularism, but we have a right (and a duty) to remember how it behaved when people under its thrall had no other choice.

  18. And those reminders of how much worse life was when christianity was at the height of its power to control the lives of people come from africa, today. It's still a hard fought battle against the darkness (christianity/religious faith), but we in the west have made a lot of progress compared to the "heretic burning" days of yore.

  19. Can we compare Christianity in a country like Uganda to Islam in a country like Turkey?

  20. This is not a church. They make a ton of money peddling hate. They are also planning a book burning of the Koran on 9/11. This past week the Alachua County property appraiser's office opened and investigation. Suddenly there buildings were place on the market. They must not expect to come out of that investigation unscathed.

  21. Gainesville here. This "church" is a laughing stock. It's a million degrees out and they want to protest??? Good luck with that! haha! p.s. If you're Gay and are thinking of moving to Florida, this really is a nice place. It's "Green", with bike lanes/paths, an old hippie sort of vibe. Don't be put off by the occasional church kooks with signs. We DID afterall elect a great mayor who happens to be Gay.

  22. Gainesville? It is an hour away from me and a place I visit often. The people are friendly, as are almost all of the people in almost all of the surrounding area for roughly 90 miles around. This part of Florida retains the old southern charm and people of all colors mix quite well. We don’t have any total black or total white areas. Well, perhaps a couple blocks might be all white with their closed community behind security walls but that is a rare item. Something you are more likely to find in Miami, Orlando or Jacksonville.

I live in a very small community and am respected and treated the same as anyone else. One of my best friends and neighbors is a black woman, she receives the same type of respect as anyone else. Some of the community is Mexicans, Native Americans, Blacks, some rednecks, whites and even a couple Asians and we all get along just fine. Just fine that is until the “snowbirds” arrive with their northern prejudices. Yes, I am saying that our trouble only happens when the nice white christian folk from the north arrive bringing their hatred with them.

There was another KKK meeting this past season, the “snowbirds” always come down for winter months, thus the name. That KKK meeting was set up and attended by northerners only. Oh, make that one exception as a southern boy (aged 45) was invited to attend. His findings and description to us was hilarious beginning with them putting the confederate flag up upside down. Then screaming about how terrible it was for whites to have to have black people living and working so much together. Our friend, the southern boy kept us entertained for almost an hour with his rendition of their presentation. He said he finally managed to get out of there away from the crazy “snowbirds” that have ruined their own area and now plan to destroy the south. Disgusting. One final note: the location that was rented for the KKK meeting (unknown to them) was actually owned by local black people. (they too found it funny, they also noted the tag numbers and out of state plates).

  23. If God himself were to come back to Earth and say "THAT'S NOT WHAT I MEANT" they still wouldn't believe it.
