Photo: Whale Breaches On Top of Sailing Yacht in Cape Town

A young southern right whale breached onto a sailing yacht captained by the Cape Town Sailing Academy in South Africa recently.

Said Paloma Werner, who was on the boat: “We had been taking some pictures and had just decided to head back when a Southern Right whale, between 11 - 14 m long, breached about 100 meters away from us. It then suddenly breached about 10 meters from us and then – right on us! We were sailing so had no engine and we could not even take any action. Scary!”

Nobody on the yacht was hurt, and the whale appeared to be unharmed, but the vessel suffered plenty of damage.

Today's lesson: what to do when a whale breaches on your boat.

  6. if you paint jonah on your sail (if that's him, otherwise the whale made an honest mistake...) you shouldn't be surprised if the whale's coming after you.

  11. Those waters are also home to great white sharks. I would have shat myself if Jaws came flying at my boat.
