President Addresses Netroots Nation

Obama

He was introduced at the political convention by Nancy Pelosi. Said Obama: "Change hasn't come fast enough for too many Americans. I know that. I know it hasn't come fast for many of you who fought so hard during the election."

Watch his full speech, complete with a "What Happens in Vegas" joke, AFTER THE JUMP.

Also, The Hill reports that Pelosi told the crowds at Netroots Nation she believes we'll see a repeal of DADT before ENDA.

"I can’t give you a time," she said of ENDA. "But I can tell you that it is a priority and it had been our hope to do it this year. We have to finish Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell and hopefully we can do both this year."

  1. I missed the joke, except that everything this guy says is a joke.

    I have more respect for "W" than for this clown. At least W believed in something (he was wrong, but at least he had some principles) and didn't use the lack of a supermajority in the Senate as an excuse for every shortcoming.

    I respect Rachel Maddow a ton. She may have the best show on television. But that little pandering clip was beneath her. This president has accomplished major health care reform (whether it will hold up ion court and whether it will be an improvement remain to be seen) but other than that there's little to show for his 18 months.

  2. I like him.

  3. Sorry, Justice, you're not entitled to your own facts. While there's plenty more to be done, when it comes to actual legislative accomplishments, this administration and the 111th Congress have had one of the most fruitful sessions in decades.

  4. "I have more respect for "W" than for this clown."

    OK, that's where our agreements end. W was horrible! Obama may not be the best president in history, but with...

    1. Healthcare Reform
    2. Finance Reform
    3. Credit Card Reform Act
    4. The Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act
    5. Signing The Matthew Shephard Act
    6. Ordering hospital visitation rights for LGBT couples
    7. (Likely) slowing the bleeding of jobs

    ...all under his belt in his first 18 months as president, he's clearly far more productive than his predecessors.

    Yes, he's failed too: DADT is still going and the Climate Bill died this week. But, when I argued that Obama hasn't changed much of anything, a friend (rightfully) corrected me by pointing out "There's a ton of change that's happened. It just may not be the change you most want to see."

  5. oh, shut up "justiceontherocks" - you're the real clown for thinking political legislation can move at lightning speed.

  6. Obama hasn't embraced the art of holding people's feet to the fire and using the media, at least not as aggressively as I'd like, but I really have to roll my eyes when people trying to make valid criticisms of him say that Bush was more respectable because you knew where you stood with him. Give me a fucking break. Plenty of righties were not thrilled when he spent more money than any human being in history, destroying our fiscal soundness, or when he failed to bring a whole host of right-wing items to fruition due to that darn governmental process thingie. The only reason he was as successful as he was on his issues—which wasn't much—was he had the 9/11 bully pulpit and never, ever feared using it. (Obama, were he to be handed a similar event, which is hard to imagine since anything bad that happens would be blamed on him as it was happening, would on the other hand steadfastly refuse to capitalize on it.)

    People also say they prefer Republicans because they're more clear-cut on gay issues (in other words, they're against all of 'em).

    I'd rather have a guy and a party in power who will get us some stuff on a path toward our getting more later on than a guy and a party in power who would be aggressively working against us. Obama's administration has had a mixed history with gay issues (that DOMA defense was horrific), but I'd rather have him and the Democrats around to shame and politically push than a group who'd be impossible to make any headway with ever.

  7. Likable but The Prez has a knack for selecting appointees who aren't up to the job. I do fault him for being locked into his progressive agenda at the expense of the economy and creating jobs. I look forward to a GOP House majority that'll make to pols work together. Clinton was a major success because of this check and balance.

  8. I like to take a peek at politifact.com and look at the score card on Pres. Obama. It looks like he's actually doing pretty well, by most anyone's read. My problems with him are that he either waits for congress to propose stuff (e.g. the health care reform that morphed into "insurance reform") or he seems to try too hard not to look like a liberal (e.g. the silly survey of troops re. DADT). It's goofiness like this video of his...pandering to the left...that cause me the biggest pain. He did it when he promised to be a "fierce advocate" for LGBTs. He did it when he talked about striking at lobbyists influence in government (a broken promise on politifact). I wish he would just admit that he values compromise more than he values doing what's right.

    His administration has done a lot...probably more than any other administration in so short a time, but he's missing one thing: a conscience.

  9. He SIGNED the hate crimes bill?

    WOW!!! STOP THE PRESSES! STOP THE PLANETS FROM SPINNING AROUND THE SUN!!!

    HE "ordered" hospital visitation rights??? Actually he ordered a study of how to order hospital visitation rights. BUT SO FUCKING WHAT? Even the RELIGIO FASCIST RIGHT WING supports gay hospital visitation. Even RALPH REED supports it!

    Let's weigh his picking up a pen and throwing a crumb NO ONE OPPOSED against his having:

    1.GUTTED any GUARANTEE of an end to discharges from the new amendment after forcing Congress to trash the Military Readiness Enhancement Act [MREA] he’d promised to start personally fighting for as soon as he took office;
    2. GUTTED the explicit ban on other forms of discrimination in the MREA against gays in the military from the amendment;
    3. GUTTED permission for those already discharged to reenlist in the MREA from the amendment;
    4. REFUSED to order his SECDEF and the Joint Chiefs of Staff to salute those three key mandates making the DOD a virtual fourth branch of government;
    5. Instead EMPOWERED Gates to come up with and spend millions of taxpayer dollars on a phony “study” built entirely around the PREMISE that allowing out gays to serve would hurt the military and intended to stall ending discharges or use its “findings” to “justify” continuing the ban permanently OR segregate gays;
    6. REFUSED to use the legal power Congress gave the Presidency in 1983 [10 United States Code 12305] to unilaterally stop discharges in the name of national security even though he’s said himself they “weaken national security”
    7. Instead has DISCHARGED some 700 gays since being sworn in, and is still discharging them, according to SLDN, under the “old rules” contrary to new ones released March 25th;
    8. REFUSED to order Gates to follow the YEAR & A HALF OLD 9th Circuit Court Witt decision banning any discharges within its multi-state jurisdiction when the military has not proven that the INDIVIDUAL damages unit cohesion. Gates finally promised on Feb. 2nd to announce such policies by mid-March but still hasn’t.
    9. NEEDLESSLY [contrary to their dishonest claims] DEFENDED DADT in court more than half a dozen times with the same homophobic language used to pass it in 1993; in fact, again in court THIS past week doing the same thing, INCLUDING insisting that plaintiff “John Doe” couldn’t “claim” he is affected by DADT because he’s still IN the military;
    10. CLAIMED DADT has been ruled constitutional by Supreme Court when it never has;
    11. Done NOTHING to keep his promise to pass ENDA;
    12. Done NOTHING to keep his promise to pass UAFA;
    13. Done NOTHING to keep his promise to repeal DOMA;
    14. Instead, DEFENDED DOMA in court repeatedly in terms even more homophobic than those used to pass it originally;
    15. Did NOTHING to help pass the hate crimes bill other than posing for a photo with Judy Shepard;
    16. Is being sued by Lambda Legal for refusing to let a lesbian federal court employee buy insurance for her partner despite a court order clearly indicating it would NOT be a violation of DOMA; nor would it cost the government a cent;
    17. Encouraged religio-fascists by telling reporters for the homohating Catholic Church that, “As a Christian, I’m constantly wrestling with my faith and my solicitude and regard and concern for gays and lesbians.” [Just as he did during the campaign when he needlessly went further than any other Dem candidate declaring he opposes marriage equality because “God is in the mix”…a recording of which was used in robocalls to millions of Californians to help pass Prop H8TE, and in literature to repeal marriage equality in Maine.]

    THREE CHEERS FOR BARACK OBAMA! Hip Hip ………BULLSHIT!

    Is he better than Bush? Is having most of your limbs cut off better than death? Bush NEVER PROMISED to do ANYTHING for LGBTs...so which one of them is more culpable?

  12. You can like Obama all you want, you can apologize for him as well, but ultimately, there's no excuse for, or apology that can cover invoking pedophilia and incest when defending DOMA.

    Posted by: Tollendyr | Jul 25, 2010 8:34:46 AM

  13. "Bush NEVER PROMISED to do ANYTHING for LGBTs...so which one of them is more culpable?"

    Um, Bush. Chiefly for getting us into a double-front (one of which was pure vanity), never ending war that burned through the global political cache we were gifted with after 9/11 in a matter of months while ensuring that our economy would be well and truly tanked and requiring that whoever came after him would have far larger shit sandwich to eat in a more immediate timeframe. The Bush/Rove/Rumsfeld/Wolfowitz "Scorched Earth" policy of presidential handover had the potential to ensure NOTHING got accomplished for the 4 to 8 years after they officially left office. Could Obama be doing more? Possibly, but frankly, given the shit storm he inherited, the fact that he's gotten ANYTHING done is a credit to his political acumen.

    Sorry, you can shake your tiny fist at Obama all you want and call "Liar Liar" and yeah, be somewhat justified in a rational critique, but the notion that, because Bush promised nothing, he was better than Obama who promised a lot, has accomplished a lot, but hasn't accomplished what YOU want in a timeframe that you arbitrarily decide is acceptable is simply self-aggrandizing sophistry of Randian proportions.

  14. Yeah "Quiturbitchin", some people just like to bitch.

    And then some people notice that this president is all talk and no action, and get no end of abuse from obamapoligists like you.

    This pres will not lift a finger to help us without having his arm twisted the entire way. But by all means, keep telling us to be polite.

Is Obama a socialist..LOL hell NO..he's center/Right....as far as W never promising the LGBT Community something...Yes..he did. He rpomised to get a Constitutional Ammendmant Against us.....I'll Take O any day...but..HELL YEA I WANT MY RIGHTS!

  17. RIGHT ON MICHAEL!

    Many of us Democrats who sweated time, money and our vote for Obama have been BETRAYED by him and will not longer fall for the "but where are you going to go?" Who cares what the apologists say. I don't.

    At the end of the day it's about what this administration had done to its own supporters. They insult us, ignore us and go for the other side who could care less about him.

    The days of voting for someone just because he or she has a "D" are over!

    And no amount of "we could have Palin as president" threats will change that.

    Ignore your voters ... your voters will ignore you

  18. Bye Bye Dem majority. You enjoy your time off and remember, nextime you campaign on promises of equality, you should follow through. It will be a long while before I give to democrats again. While Republicans don't make promises of support, they also don't take my money and make false promises. At least they look me in the eye when they fuck me.

  19. BO deserves a challenge from the left in 12
    Like Ted K did to Jimmy carter in 1980
    That would serve this bastard right
    He takes gay people for granted
    He has fucked over progressives who put him in office
    Without early progressive support he would not be president
    What do we get
    Nuclear power
    A move to increase off shore drilling -right before the deep water horizon fiasco
    Two wars expanded
    Endless military spending
    Spineless, craven,
    Crap heath care bill -
    Ditto on financial reform
    Energy bill is dead
    He fucked up from the start
    He hates gay people
    Queers that can’t face that are
    wrapped up in self hate
    You accept a man who hates you and
    make excuses for his
    Appalling, abysmal record on gay rights
    He has the largest majority in both houses in the last quarter century
    He should have everything he wants
    He is inept
    Reid is worse
    This should have been a progressive field day for the past two years
    Instead they play along with this farce that 60 not 51 votes is a majority
    That rule could have been changed at the beginning of this congress
    Obama does not deserve one progressive vote
    Or one vote from any self respecting queer
    Ever again
    Not one dime
    Not one vote
    He is not our friend
    He does not believe that we are equal citizens under the law
    He is against gay marriage
    Think about that for a minute
    He is under 50
    Urban
    Urbane
    Highly educated
    Not all that religious
    And yet he is against gay marriage
    That does not add up
    I know tons of straight men who fit that demographic
    Every single one is for marriage equality
    Not this mother fucker
    Ask yourself this
    Would someone who liked and respected gay people have stuck a finger in our eye with rick warren?
    No
    If he cared about us he would have campaigned against prop 8 in CA
    He carried that state by a huge margin
    He could have made a difference for us
    He does not respect us
    He does not like us
    He takes us for granted
    That goes equal for queers as it does for progressives
    I hope he is defeated in 12
    Maybe then in 16 we’ll get something much better than this bastard
