Watch: Mom Boycotts Target Over Anti-Gay Campaign Donation

Randi Reitan is a mother of a gay son and grandmother who shops at Target but won't anymore because of its anti-gay donation to Minnesota Forward PAC, which contributed to ads for anti-gay gubernatorial candidate Tom Emmer.

She took her protest directly to the store, and shot this video.

Says Reitan: "They've lost that $226.32. And they've lost every purchase from my family. What's important in life is people. I love the people in my life. I love them more than anything I could buy at this store. I'm going to boycott Target until they make this right."

Note: There is now a Facebook group pushing a Target boycott.

  1. It makes me indescribably happy to know that there are people like this wonderful woman in the world. Listening to her, you can clearly tell that she isn't doing this to gain publicity for herself, but rather, she is doing this because she truly believes in helping us to better our community; if I there is any way to personally thank her, I would be glad to know about it. I will say that it might be a little bit unfair for her to explain to the manager about each item and so on as the store employees have no say in what the company does, but her heart was in the right place, and I believe that the ends justify the means. And as far as the argument that Target first gave the money to MN Forward which then gave the money to Emmer is inconsequential; Companies should not have the ability to influence political campaigns in this way; the Supreme Court ruling that declared that companies have the rights of Citizens was a grave mistake, and I hope that one day soon it will be reversed, before serious damage can be done.

  2. I wrote target to tell them why I would not be their customer as long as they were contributing to political campaigns. I received a form letter basically stating that Target HAD to donate money to political campaigns to advance their business in the states where they donate. They HAVE TO? Jesus, what has happened to our political system. They are basically saying they have to pay people off to get what they want. BS! The Supreme Court f***ed up royally when they decided to allow corporations to contribute to political campaigns. It was a bad decision, bad for our political process and bad for everyday Joe's like me who are loosing control of our elections to big money and big corporations. If you want to rectify this situation, put a fire under your representatives feet to get the Supreme Court decision overturned. It CAN happen. Read the Constitution. GET BIG CORPORATIONS OUT OF OUR POLITICAL PROCESS. PERIOD!

  3. Even GLBT rights group OutFront Minnesota isn't calling for a boycott. We need to keep this in perspective. Target isn't pursuing an anti-gay agenda, they are pursuing a tax reform agenda. See blog post: "Is Target Anti-Gay? Unlikely".
