Report: Former RNC Chair Ken Mehlman to Come Out of the Closet

Mehlman

Mike Rogers of Blogactive, the blogger featured in Outrage, Kirby Dick's documentary which exposed closeted hypocritical politicians, reports that former RNC Chair Ken Mehlman is coming out of the closet:

"Ken Mehlman, the former Chairman of the Republican National Committee is set to come out of the closet in a column by Atlantic writer Marc Ambinder Friday morning or early next week. This will be on the heels of him being included in fundraising letter supporting marriage equality."

Mehlman has previously denied being gay. After the 2006 White House Correspondents Dinner, he said, "I’m not gay. But those stories did a number on my dating life for six months"

You may recall a segment of Larry King Live from back in November 2006 in which Bill Maher outed Mehlman. CNN edited the west coast feed and cut out the comments in which Maher outed Mehlman, also deleting the uncut version from YouTube.

The New York Times reported on the editing, but also wouldn't name Mehlman, saying that Maher "[speculated about some politicians’ sex lives."

At the time, a spokesman for Larry King Live told the paper, "When someone says something potentially defamatory that we don’t expect them to say live on the air, we typically won’t be liable for it. However, if we continue to rebroadcast it, without any reporting of our own or any comment from the subject of the accusation, we could be legally responsible for what that guest said."

Continued, AFTER THE JUMP...

Rogers wants contrition, apology, and action:

So, how can Ken Mehlman redeem himself? I want to hear from Ken that he is sorry for being the architect of the 2004 Bush reelection campaign. I want to hear from Ken that he is sorry for his role in developing strategy that resulted in George W. Bush threatening to veto ENDA or any bill containing hate crimes laws. I want to hear from Ken that he is sorry for the pressing of two Federal Marriage Amendments as political tools. I want to hear from Ken that he is sorry for developing the 72-hour strategy, using homophobic churches to become political arms of the GOP before Election Day.

And those state marriage amendments. I want to hear him apologize for every one of those, too.

And then there is one other little thing. You see, while you and I had the horrible feelings of being treated so poorly by our President, while teens were receiving the messaging 'gay is bad' giving them 'permission' to gay bash, while our rights were being stripped state by state, Ken was out there laughing all the way to the bank. So, if Ken is really sorry, and he very well may be, then all he needs to do is sell his condo and donate the funds to the causes he worked against so hard for all those years. He's done a lot of damage to a lot of organizations, while making a lot of moeny. A LOT of money. It's time to put his money where his mouth is. Ken Mehlman is sitting in a $3,770,000.00 (that's $3.77 million) condo in Chelsea while we have lost our right to marry in almost 40 states.

THEN, and only then, should Mehlman be welcomed into our community.

  1. To those who are saying that the gay community needs to accept Mehlman and other Republicans who come out, let us make a distinction.

I have no particular issue with gay Republicans. I disagree with them, but have a respect for them in their efforts to create a place at the conservative table for members of our community. But Mehlman is a different beast entirely.

He made a decision to stay in the closet in order to garner ENORMOUS personal profit at the expense of the community. As chair of the RNC he actively coordinated vicious, lying attacks on gay and lesbian people. He lied about being gay in order to hide this hypocrisy because it would embarrass the party and reduce his pay.

I consider him to be in essentially the same category as a war profiteer. He willfully lied, schemed and destroyed the lives of innocent people and lined his pockets while doing so. He is the lowest of the low and his path to redemption, should he even be interested will be a very long one.

  3. Sorry BRECKROY, having a homosexual orientation does NOT automatically make a person part of the gay COMMUNITY. There are many homosexuals, closeted and otherwise, who, by their own choice, are not part of, and don't want to be part of the gay community. Ask Alan Chambers and James Hartline if they are members of the gay community. Then try explaining to them that they actually are even if they don't want to be.

No matter how sweetly and eloquently you said it, it simply isn't true.

  5. This self-hating foul "man" worked for the 2004 re-election of GWB. That election was, by far, the most anti-gay election of modern times and this guy went right along with it. How pathetic!

  7. @BreckRoy, unlike TOM IN BAY AREA, i find nothing thoughtful about what you said. should the jews have accepted mengele? this is only different by degree. not only was he a conservative, but he was a gay man who helped set back gay rights in all manner by working for what was the enemy. his craven, nefarious machinations not only affected gays by getting bush/cheney elected, they impacted the lives of countless innocent people: our soldiers, their families, the entire usa and the entire country of iraq. all this is inexcusable and unforgivable. i don't want shameless, pathetic quislings in my community. fuck the p.o.s.

  8. Yawn. I'm far more troubled that it's ok for media outlets to consider "gay" defamatory, simply because it might potentially harm someone financially. Nowadays, calling someone a Muslim might harm them financially, but that doesn't make it a defamatory accusation. Sheesh.

As for the gay community or any other - if there were no distinction between being gay and being part of the Gay Community, why would be have different words for it? Membership in any community is not automatic simply because you fit into some category or other.

Of course, no one has the authority to be out there revoking Gay Cards, but there's more to being part of the gay community than simply being gay. If you are a backstabbing traitor to the gay community, I'd say that's a community you've opted out of.

  15. How will he fix all the damage he's caused? Children, families, soldiers, workers, and so many people have ultimately been hurt by his Republican party's attacks on gays over the years! What is he doing to undo all that?!
