Michigan Assistant AG Targets Gay University Student President Chris Armstrong in Disgusting Cyber-Bullying Campaign

Shirvell

UPDATED

Assistant attorney general of Michigan Andrew Shirvell (above) has been targeting gay University of Michigan President Chris Armstrong in a cyber-bullying campaign on a disgusting, extremist private blog, Chris Armstrong Watch

"With 27 postings to date, Shivell’s blog is filled with language you’ll never hear him use in a court room, calling Armstrong 'nazi like,' a recruiter for 'the cult that is homosexuality,' and a proponent of a 'racist, anti-Christian agenda.'"

Armstrong is the university's first openly gay student body president. I posted about his election last March.

Ironically, Shirvell's boss, attorney general Mike Cox, advocates actively against just this kind of bullying, according to WXYZ:

"In classroom’s across the state, Attorney General Mike Cox uses videos to teach students the dangers of internet predators and cyber bullies. 'We want you to be safe on the Internet, and in particular, we want to protect you from Internet predators,' said Cox in the video."

Yet so far Cox has done nothing more than chastise Shirvell.

The Detroit Free Press reports: Armstrong

"Andrew Shirvell, an attorney who works in Cox’s appellate division, writes a blog called Chris Armstrong Watch, in which he calls the student leader a 'radical homosexual activist, racist, elitist and liar.' Shirvell has picketed events where Armstrong has appeared, according to the blog. 'All state employees have a right to free speech outside working hours,' Cox said in a statement today. 'But Mr. Shirvell’s immaturity and lack of judgment outside the office are clear.' Cox spokesman John Sellek confirmed that Shirvell is a civil service employee, but said the office would have no further comment. Civil service employees enjoy greater job security than at-will employees."

WXYZ adds:

"With 27 postings to date, Shivell’s blog is filled with language you’ll never hear him use in a court room, calling Armstrong 'nazi like,' a recruiter for 'the cult that is homosexuality,' and a proponent of a 'racist, anti-Christian agenda.'"

The University of Michigan's paper, Michigan Daily, wants Shirvell removed from office:

Though much of Shirvell’s tirades are one step from utter nonsense, his disdain for the LGBT community is obvious. Shirvell criticizes the LGBT community’s push for social equality in blanket statements that are plainly offensive to everyone. Though offensive, however, Shirvell’s hateful remarks aren’t a threat to campus. The University community recognizes Shirvell’s attacks as what they really are: the rants of a bigot.

Attorney General Mike Cox has not reacted appropriately to this reality. As reported on Tuesday, the attorney general’s office confirmed to the Daily that the office was aware of Shirvell’s blog. Yesterday, the Detroit Free Press reported that Cox had “chastised” Shirvell for the statements made on the blog. According to a statement from Cox, Shirvell is entitled to “a right to free speech outside working hours … But Mr. Shirvell’s immaturity and lack of judgment outside the office are clear.”

Shirvell’s increasingly extreme actions of discrimination aren’t the result of a lapse in judgment. His behavior does not stem from immaturity. It stems from hatred. And this type of hatred makes Shirvell unsuitable to remain a government official.

UPDATE:

Andrew_shirvell

Michigan's PrideSource has identified a participant at a May counter-protest of the Westboro Baptist Church over their picket of a production of The Laramie Project in May, as Andrew Shirvell.

At that counter-protest, Shirvell was again attacking Armstrong (see photo).

  1. Hey- AG Cox- yes he has a right to free speech but his speech is reflecting poorly on your office. Free speech does not equate freedom from consequences.

Also, why does this tool have so much hate for the gay community? Hmmm...

  4. Either this guy is a self-loathing closet-case, or he's an ultra-extreme homophobic Christian... or both.

I'm not sure what Mr. Shirvell thinks Mr. Armstrong's evil gay agenda is going to do exactly? Convert all the straight people to the awesomeness of homosexuality? I mean, the wackjob is calling him a gay nazi. How do you rationally deal with people like that? For starters, the A.G. should force him to go through diversity training. If he refuses, fire him for cause.

  5. Armstrong is not the University president. He's president of the student government body. He's a kid. That makes this even more absurd and nauseating... that the assistant AG of the state of Michigan would find it appropriate to go so far as to PICKET events where an undergraduate student is appearing.

Michigan residents should be proud of Armstrong, and horrified at the behavior of their officials.

  8. Who does this?

This is a "professional" guy targeting and attacking a nice college kid for no reason.

    Bigotry is an ugly thing.

  9. Wow -- this guy is an Asst AG???? He cites as "proof" of underage drinking an affirmative RSVP to a Facebook event -- DO NOT LET THIS MAN NEAR A COURTROOM!

"And heavens! The ho-mo-seckshul had [stage whisper] sex with OTHER MEN-folk! What ain't even gay!"

FIRE THIS MAN. He is a disgrace and if I knew someone that biased were working in _my_ government I would have ZERO faith in that office's impartiality.

  10. I would not want a person whose judgement is so questionable (at best) working for me. It would reflect badly on my hiring abilities.

  12. A case here of having a state with a rational Democratic governor and a Teapublican attorney general. Leave it on the hands of the voters to pull that one.

  13. AG Cox has a responsibility to fire that moron, he is a public servant! Armstrong is taking the high road (to his credit) but I would have been a lot less forgiving and sued the fuck out of any moron that called me a nazi... defamation anyone? And from someone in the AG's office??? Jeez!

  15. My guess is that Shrivel tried to cruise Armstrong in some bathroom, but that his foot taps were ignored. Now he's gone all Alex Forrest on him. Armstrong needs to get a restraining order.

  16. Skimming through the guy's blog, I can't help but notice how angry Shervill is and how happy Armstrong looks. Look at his pics - he's always got a million-dollar grin on his face. Look at Shervill and you see the personification of sourpuss. Looks to me like Shervill has some serious anger issues, and as easy as it is to make fun him (I just did a second ago), he's probably more deserving of pity than mockery.

  19. This is just completely BIZARRE. This guy is OBSESSED with Armstrong! He's taking the most mild-mannered polite kid and trying desperately to turn him into some kind of monster; I can't fathom how anyone would buy it. There must be some backstory, some personal history, as to why Shirvell is obsessed with him!
