Alan Cumming On Obama: He's Done "Diddly Squat" For Gays

Alanobama Alan Cumming has, in the past, vocally supported Barack Obama politically and in other ways. It seems like these days, the bisexual actor has completely changed his tune. He's now come out against the president and has some pretty harsh words for him. He tells the Herald Scotland:

“We keep hearing that Obama is an ally, that ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ will end under his watch, but what do we actually get? Diddly squat thus far on a federal level, and in addition to that some very offensive statements that would have made the Republicans look bad. When America is full of hatred of all kinds, but especially hatred towards young gay people, what message is the President sending when he repeatedly goes out of his way to spread the message that the gay population is not worthy of the respect that everyone else is?"

  2. So trans-inclusive hate crimes is diddly squat? What alternate universe is he living in?

    Posted by: jersey | Oct 24, 2010 2:26:59 PM

  3. Sorry Jersey, trans-inclusive hate crime is important, but it's shit compared to the support we gave our 'fierce advocate'. Obama reminds me of the guy you meet, who promises you the stars, but then turns out to be all hot air.

Is he better then the GOP, sure he doesn't beat you, but we deserve much more than that. Unless we put all politicians feet to the fire, we'll never get more than empty promises.

  4. The DOJ appealing the DADT court case is not a personal attack against gays. If the law barred Muslims from serving or those who are left handed they'd appeal just the same. It's the fact that the reasonings the plaintiffs are using could set a precedent for other federal cases in the future. It's not about DADT. I'd personally prefer that they not appeal it but I understand why they are.

The Defense Authorization Bill (DADT repeal) will be brought to the floor of the senate for a vote before the new Congress is sworn in.

  5. Brian in Texas - The Defense Authorization Bill (DADT repeal) will be brought to the floor of the senate and get killed YET AGAIN by the Republicans because Obama will do fuck all to ensure it's passage.

Anyone who think that DADT will be repealed in Congress, is either delusional or stupid...or both.

  6. I don't disagree that we should put politicians' feet to the fire, but again, getting trans-inclusive hate crimes done is not "shit" compared to the support you gave Obama unless that support involved bankrupting yourself. That was a major accomplishment and the obvious first place to start. He never claimed that he would get everything done in the first year so it's hard to see DADT, for which the cake was baked long ago when the study was announced, as an "empty promise". Get a grip.

  7. Who is this dick and why should I give a fuck what he has to say?

At the end of the day, stop with all the negativity and make sure you vote Democratic in the upcoming election.

The alternative should make you shit your pants! Yes, it DOES matter.

  8. Fierce Advocate...

    I don't think so.

The appeal of the ruling to cease DADT is to protect himself from another attack from the birth certificate crowd in the elephant's party etcetera. I also believe it is a strong indication of his real opinion on Gays. Other evidence is his refusal to act as the Commander in Chief to stop the discharges. He has the authority as president to make that happen, but doesn't. To me, that is one more clear indication that keeping us as second or third class citizens is part of the goal and plan. Don't most Americans need a scapegoat or a whipping boy?

Barrack Obama also knows that most of us out, open and proud gays will continue to vote for him and his ilk because the elephant party crew are worse. Really a choice between the lesser of two evils.

I did not make a choice to be gay. I'm sick and tired of being told that by homophobes, including the president. I did not chose to be white, male, gay, have blue eyes, my height, hair color or parents.

  9. I don't understand what the concept of "bankrupting yourself" has to do with the statements made. This has to do with promises made and promises kept. The Republicans are poised to win the House and possibly the Senate - and if not win, have enough of a minority to kill or stall anything they don't want going to Obama's desk for a signature. Obama's agenda will be nothing more than yesterdays fish come January. And he'll spend the next two years fighting for his political life. Some of this was not Obama's fault -- he had a shitstorm of an economy to crawl out from -- and big business took a lot of bail out, keeping the money and not creating jobs to squeeze the Obama administration and the Democrats, waiting out until the midterms when they could get more Republicans in office and get more tax breaks for themselves. And that will happen. What won't happen is any socially progressive agenda -- including anything else for the LGBT community. The pittance we got is all we're going to get. Obama will blame the Republicans come campaign donation time. But he should have ramrodded his social agenda through when he had the chance. We expect our President and the Democrats to do more than one thing at a time...and articulate clearly a progression for the country. They didn't. And now they and all who supported them will pay.

  11. NOT SO. PLEASE GO TO THIS LINK FOR AN EXHAUSTIVE LIST OF OBAMA'S ACCOMPLISHMENTS FOR THE GAY COMMUNITY!
    VOTE YOU MUST VOTE.
DON'T CUT OFF YOUR OWN NUTZ AND EXPECT TO ADVANCE GAY RIGHTS.
The Log Cabin Gay Republicans could not get their party to stop their filibuster against repealing DADT this list is impressive.

  12. I think "diddly squat" is incredibly demeaning to the gay stuff he has done. True, his DADT "strategy" has failed (so far...and will be 100% failed by year's end if the lame-duck session fails to repeal it) and DOMA is a pipe dream (and always was), but what he's done has been good in its own right.

I agree with Bart that he should have ramrodded away when he had the chance. He has to be held accountable for and reminded of that.

But I would answer Cumming that the kind of message Obama is sending is encapsulated within his "It Gets Better" video; the fact that it's hypocritical to be anti-marriage equality but pro-gay in other ways shouldn't be overlooked, nor should it be weighted to the point where his entire gay agenda is snorted at.

ROLLING STONE put it best in saying that calling the prez on his bullshit is far removed from calling his presidency shit.

  13. Like this is something new?? The DEMS court us, seduces us, whisper sweet nothings in our ears as they gently caress money out of our wallets, then leave the next morning without even dropping off a couple of bucks for the McDonald's dollar menu. You actually expected more from barry?

  14. The time to judge whether or not Obama has done enough for the LGBT community isn't now - it will be in the next election.

I'm no fan of Obama. Believe me. "Fierce advocate" my ass. BUT - he was elected to a 4 year term. I believe in giving him the four years. If DADT repeal happens in the next few months, I think a lot in our community will finally have something "big ticket" to point to. He's not even half way through his term. I'm willing to wait until the next election to see.

AGAIN - I'm no fan. But if we finally get something in the next year or so, then all this negative bashing will be just that - negative bashing.

And while we're on it - what are the alternatives? Stay at home and let the Repubs re-district things in the next two years to make our votes even less meaningful?

  15. Because I do not know who Alan Cumming is, and really don't care, the headline on this article took me to an ENTIRELY different, and somewhat strange, place!

  17. What's the f&@%ing debate ? Do you lot seriously want to vote for the fascists ?

We've made our choice , let's stick with him.

  18. My sentiments exactly: this douche bag doesn't like gay people. I suspected this when he invited Rick Warren to do the invocation. In case you obamabots missed that: one of the most gay-hostile christian ministers was invited to do the invocation. It was revealed later that Warren was in on the Ugandan Kill the Gays bill. To add insult to injury, when the gay bishop, Gene Robinson, was to speak, none of the recording machinery was working. How convenient for The Douche-Bag.

Thanks Alan for voicing what many of us think: Obama is a big, big Douche-Bag.

That said, I'll vote for the democrat Boxer this election. I will certainly vote for Jerry Brown. He has been extremely gay supportive and is a TRUE progressive. His election is the only thing that gives me hope for California.

As to the presidency, I'm hoping that gay money will help find a candidate to oppose The Douche-Bag in the 2012 presidential primary. If we don't, I'll vote Green for president in 2012.

NO SELF RESPECTING GAY COULD EVER VOTE FOR THE DOUCHE BAG AGAIN.

  19. Dear Alan, please shut up. I know you're a new citizen and all that and welcome to the family and all that, but Obama's Watch ain't over yet.

See, to all those pouting, petulant poofters who are going to sit this one out to show just how damned mad they are at the President, I wonder if you are aware of that old adage "cut off your nose to spite your face"?

See, what the Dems need is a record off-year election turn out so they can keep control of the Congress and also get the message that it's OK to support LGBT equality; that it's OK to reform the government; that it's OK to work for change' that it's OK to stand up to the corporations, banks and other moneyed interest in favor of the middle- and working-classes.

The Democrats' resurgence since 2006 is still nascent and fragile. Remember, we've been under some form of republicon/conservative/evangelical/wing-nut control since 1981, when Ronald Reagan brought the fringe, lunatic right into the mainstream of American politics.

To allow the right-wing back into the seat of power simply to "send a message to Obama and the Democrats" is the height of irresponsible citizenship. Do any of you REALLY want repubicons to control Congress? Do any of you REALLY want John Boehner to be The Speaker of The House? Do any of you REALLY want Mitch McConnell to become the Senate Majority Leader?

Get over yourselves, get off your asses (you too, Alan, dear) and VOTE on Tuesday, November 2.

  24. People who keep whining about supporting the Democrats after they have fucked over the LGBT voters year after year, yet continue to prod them for donations, are the jackasses. Worse, they continue to hold the LGBT voters back, reducing their strength as a voting block. They should be shunned.

Vote for *your* values, not for who you think has a better chance at winning. This isn't a Vegas odds game, and there isn't a cash payout at the end for making the right guess. When the Democrats see that we can help them *lose* instead of win, they will be far more receptive to actually passing progressive legislation than just talking about it. Or calling it fucking retarded.

  25. If you refuse to support Democrats or Barack Obama out of some sense of obligation to your ideological purity, I suppose you can argue that your conscience remains intact, which along with $2 will get you a nice tasty, cookie, but please don't think you're helping. The only thing you're actually helping is your ego.
