Barney Frank: LGBT Legislation Has 'No Chance' of Passing Next Year

Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA) tells the Washington Blade that Democrats will be there to block any anti-gay legislation proposed by the Republican majority in the Senate, but warns not to expect any pro-LGBT legislation to get passed:

Barney “Next year there’s no chance of anything happening,” he said of pro-LGBT legislation. “There’s zero chance.”

He added, “It will be a status quo. They don’t have the votes to hurt us but we don’t have the votes to advance anything in the cause.”

Frank also said he was certain that Republicans would fail in an attempt to overturn D.C.’s same-sex marriage law.

“Do you think Barack Obama is going to sign a bill to repeal the D.C. marriage law,” he asked. “It won’t go through the Senate. There is no chance that could happen. None—zero.”

Frank noted that only five out of 179 House Republicans voted earlier this year to repeal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”

“The Republicans have become much more anti-gay in their voting patterns,” he said. “There is zero chance of anything good happening with Republicans in control of the House.”

Frank said he was "hopeful" about passing 'DADT repeal' legislation in the lame duck Senate, which is perhaps all one can be at this point.

  1. @Tank, Its hard to have sympathy for people who want to join any Army. I have very few morals since I am not religious, one of them is don't kill people because it sucks for the dead guy.

If you are going to refuse to take any nuance or context to your decisions then you are a bully. So all the Dems didnt do shit for us? Nancy Pelosi, Obama and everyone else you voted for has failed you in every way?

I like yelling when mad too, it's cathartic, But once you are done yelling, the onus of being mad is on you to prove that you are correct in your anger.

So yeah, be mad you should be, THEY SUCK, but keep it in context. Even if you have one brilliant guy, everyone else in congress is stupid and corrupt. It's naive to think that things can be your way because you, as an outsider, can see a way they could be.

  2. See what I mean? Cracked after post of irrelevant and vacuous pro obama and democrat propaganda...but it's done very poorly. And with that, continued attention just makes it worse.

  3. I think it's time to accept that nothing is ever going to get passed by Congress. The only solutions to repealing DADT and DOMA is through the courts. One reason why keeping control in the Senate is more important than the House is that the Senate confirms judges, so at least we still have a chance at getting good judges appointed. This is also the only good reason left to vote for Obama in 2012.

  4. @ Ken, See half full!

@Tank, Cerealy, grow up. You rarely provide any more than you think I provide. DO you hate me because I reflect you?

  5. I wonder if this is going to be a repeat of the Clinton years when gays were abused so that Clinton could get the rest of his triangulation agenda passed.

  6. Well the Democrats are a bunch of sour losers. They had a chance and failed. I'm with everyone else that the only way we will get our rights is through the courts. I'll be sending my financial support to the Log Cabin Republicans, because lately they are the only people capable of getting gains accomplished for our community. Everything else is just wishful thinking. I would like to say, Republican John Dennis would have done more for our community, but the uneducated voters re-elected Nancy.

  7. The system is rigged to keep gays from full citizenship, and that corrupt system won't be changing.

The courts? Behold our Fierce Advocate, working hard to overturn our rare court victories. Wouldn't want gays to make an end-run around the system! Silly gays--you aren't allowed to win.

We're supposed to vote, and vote only for one corrupt party, regardless of its total failure to deliver. That would make no sense except that we're made to vote out of fear, fear of the other corrupt party and its bigoted base. That is how the system is rigged. But voting from fear delivers what we see today--the anti-gay status quo. We must find the courage to break from this vicious cycle and organize for our own needs.

  8. Barney is nothing if not observant. Besides, it's not like he has anything to lose. He still keeps his health care. Thanks for the leadership, Cornholio. You rose to the occasion.

  9. It only take one Senator to hold up business in the Senate, unless you have 60 votes behind you. This has been the way things have been for the last two years (it has taken over a year in some cases to get appointees approved in the Senate).

There's no way the Republicans in Congress are going to move left or do anything Pro-LGBT, they're going to dig in their heels and block everything they can for the next two years. To think otherwise is a pipe dream.
