Don't Ask, Don't Tell | Joe Lieberman | Military | Mitch McConnell | News

Last Night, Mitch McConnell Tried a Last-Ditch Amendment to Defense Bill to Block 'DADT' Repeal

He was blocked by Joe Lieberman, Politico reports:

Mcconnell A last-ditch effort by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) to complicate the repeal of the "don't ask, don't tell" policy was blocked Tuesday night after Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) objected, Senate aides said.

McConnell attempted to add an amendment to the so-called stripped-down defense authorization bill that would have required the consent of the military service chiefs to proceed with "don't ask" repeal. Under legislation passed by the Senate last week, certifications are required from the president, the secretary of defense and the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff. All the incumbents in those positions support repeal.

"It was a McConnell proposal," a GOP aide confirmed. "There was an attempted to get unanimous consent for it to be included in the defense bill and someone objected."

McConnell's amendment, which Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and other GOP senators have been urging for months, called for certifications from the four service chiefs. All of the incumbents in those positions have expressed at least some reservations about repeal at this time.

Repeal advocates have long viewed such an amendment as a poison pill. Presumably, this is what prompted Lieberman's objection.

The Caucus has more on the stinky last-ditch move.

The 'DADT' repeal act signing is scheduled to take place at 9:15 am at the Department of Interior. Please join us LIVE a few minutes before that time.

  1. What a jackass. What does GOProud have to say about this?

Mitch McConnell has been very effective at undermining everything the Democrats have proposed for the past two years, and it will only get worse starting in January.

  5. As a native Kentuckian, I'm deeply ashamed McConnell represents my former home state. He and the majority of his fellow Repugs aided and abetted by groups like GOProud are abominations to all that is right and just for GLBT citizens of this land. Why wasting time and effort on a futile effort like killing the repeal of DADT or slowing down its implementation is beyond my grasp. It seems most Congressional Repugs have no sense of what's important for the future of our nation beyond their own pettiness in trying to defeat every positive effort by the Obama Administration. Losers all.

  7. I cannot for the life of me understand why anyone would be a gay replublican. It just doesn't make sense. Do you think gay republicans know any of this information or are they completely ignorant and closed off? I just don't get why would support a party FIGHTING AGAINST YOU.

  9. Wow, the paucity of comments on this post lead me to believe that all the Obama/Dem haters on the other DADT posts must be Gay Republicans. Shouldn't this post have more comments?

  10. "I cannot for the life of me understand why anyone would be a gay replublican. It just doesn't make sense. Do you think gay republicans know any of this information or are they completely ignorant and closed off? I just don't get why would support a party FIGHTING AGAINST YOU."

Well that depends, I think it is STUPID for any gay person to be member of any of the two major parties, I think gay people should be and can do better than that. The Libertarian Party for instance actually supports gay marriage and has it in its platform. Let us be clear: NEITHER party supports legalizing gay marriage.

However, it also depends which state you live in. Maybe being a gay republican say in California or Massachusetts, might be more acceptable (since the GOP in those states are not homophobic) but in places like Arkansas, where the democrats have control of the legislature and local authorities, yet it has passed anti-gay legislation all the time. So in that case IT DOESN'T make sense to be a gay democrat.

  11. "I just don't get why would support a party FIGHTING AGAINST YOU."

And yet Obama and his minions are defending DOMA in court and have defended DADT in court. Setting your obvious naivety couldn't that also be construed also as "FIGHTING AGAINST YOU?"

  12. Oh Pepa, your inability to compare things accurately stopped being amusing a while ago.

It's not the same, it never will be the same. Not being a cheerleader is not the same as actively trying to screw people over.

  13. Still empty rhetoric on the part of people defending the gay Republican nonsense. Gay Republicans in my experience substitute political feeling for political thought, and tend to be very ill-informed. Oh, and they think tax cuts trump all. They point out flaws in the Democratic party, and act like the two parties are somehow equivalent. What a horror show it would have been to have McCain in charge. Or worse yet, Palin...
