Watch: Former Joint Chiefs Chair Hugh Shelton Tells Jon Stewart He's Concerned About Hasty 'DADT' Repeal

Former Joint Chiefs Chair Hugh Shelton joins Jon Stewart to talk about his new memoir, Julian Assange and Wikileaks, and "Don't Ask, Don't Tell".

Shelton says he agrees with the Chief of the Army and the Marine Commandant and is concerned by how a quick 'DADT' repeal might "break the elements" that contribute to military readiness.

In unrelated news, Shelton alleges that the U.S. considered shooting down a U.S. pilot to start a war with Iraq under the Clinton administration.

  1. One wonders how this decaying old, white fossil defines quick and hasty.

What would a reasonable timetable be? Maybe a hundred years or more.

  2. Yes indeed...the process for ending DADT has been ongoing for YEARS...let's slow down and not be too hasty.

  3. Rob,

What about decaying, old black fossils? Brown fossils? Decaying, old Asian fossils? Decaying, old native American fossils? Decaying, old Jewish lesbian dwarf fossils?

    Just sayin',Rob

  4. Actually, for that matter, what about young and middle aged fossils? Only, decaying, old white fossils?

  6. He needn't be concerned. It won't happen.

  7. So, basically, what he's saying is that our armed forces aren't able to take basic commands from their leaders? I didn't realize the military was a democracy.

  8. What Shelton says here is that a few gay soldiers in their midst will literally "break" the infantry, an infantry that is supposed to be fighting the Taliban. If that's true, there is no hope for them winning in Afghanistan.

  9. I was kinda expecting him to shoot lightning out of his fingertips and demand that Jon join the dark side.

  10. Ratbastard,

I referred to General Shelton as a decaying, old white fossil because that is what he is. Unless there is something wrong with my monitor, the photo of Shelton clearly shows a white male. Yes, there are plenty of other color young and old fossils against DADT, but this post was about an old white one. I apologize for being accurate.

  11. Did you hear his bullshit reason why we can't do what other countries have managed to do? We've got a bigger military. Apparently, the bigger the military, the more homophobic it becomes. Maybe he should have just said, "Yes, Americans are WAY more homophobic than those 36 other countries." At least he would have been honest about it.

  12. Wow, what a great plan for an enemy to destroy America's military from within! Infiltrate all the armed services with large numbers of stealth queens, ready to pounce on unsuspecting and easily sexually intimidated heterosexuals when given the word. Perhaps a code word is given during an intense battle, like "fabulous" and all the queens announce: "we're here, we're queer, and you look scrumptious!" At this point our military will fold, unit cohesion will evaporate and our troops will scamper off the field in panic and full retreat. I'm sure the North Koreans are working on something this right now!

These old bigots are desperate and sad.

  13. Rob,

Ratbastard is always lamenting the oppression that white men must face in this cruel colored world. I'm going to send him the brand new recording of Glenn Beck singing "....nobody knows da trouble I seeeeen....nobody knows mah sorrow..." Beck is accompanied by Wagneresque style musical arrangement played by a full Ayrian orchestra.

  14. I have to wonder what these guys are thinking will happen once DADT is repealed, that they are so fearful of the rapid destruction of combat readiness. How many gay soldiers do they think there are, and do they expect them all to come out to everyone instantly with great gay fanfare? Such silliness.

  15. I respect John for not saying, "Sir, you didn't really answer my question" when he kept repeating himself by mentioning the concern of the some of the combat troops. But, part of me just wanted him to say "So basically, all this opposition to repeal of DADT is primariy a fear, ignorance and/or hatred of homosexuality"...which, we all know is the case (from the top leadership down).

  16. Derrick,

You want to see some SERIOUS contemporary oppression and abuse, go to Africa where black 'leaders' oppress, abuse, and steal from their own so-called people at a monumental scale. No need for any white devils, they good at it all by themselves. Check out Asia; Asian 'leaders' likewise abuse and oppress on a massive scale fellow Asians. The same M.O. is repeated all over the world. The U.S., western Europe, Australia, a few other places, are of course TAME in this department compared compared to most of the world.

BTW Derrick, ever hear of AFFIRMATIVE ACTION? It's legalized discrimination AGAINST whites [poor, working-class, middle-class, wealthy, doesn't's based solely on skin color, gender, people with specific ethnic last names, etc.,]? It's existed for 40 years, Derrick. I could go on but won't. You and people like you will just post a snark and ridicule the messenger.

Some people can't handle the truth. That's why political correctness was invented.
