  1. Andy, thanks for sharing the link, but Obama's shift on DOMA strategy did not put Mary Bonauto in the spotlight.

Mary's sheer unbridled awesomeness put her in the spotlight.

  2. Is it bad that I had to google Belarus because I didn't know it was a country?

  3. "Gay rights movement born in 19th century Germany, scholar says"

This is not news. It's pretty much been known to anyone who has read about the evolution of gay rights since, oh, 1870 or so.

@Scott: "Is it bad that I had to google Belarus because I didn't know it was a country?"

    Yes.

  4. Did everyone else read the Jamaican bar raid story? This is insane. There are death threats (from what looks like someone with the education of a 4 year old) in emails.

  5. Next time you meet with a dictator in Belawuss, be sure to include the following in your conversation: "Your wife is really ugly - you should at least divorce her. Are your kids going to grow up as stupid as you are or have they already been institutionalized?" I assume the Germans have to play nice because Russian gas has to go through Belarussian pipelines which could sustain "technical problems" especially during cold snaps in Germany.

  7. It's one thing to accurately trace the first efforts to get any kind of legal rights for gay to the 19th Century as Kevin notes. BUT, not only was that first documented decades ago, in addition, the author's apparent larger intent, as evidenced by his title, "The German Invention of Homosexuality," is to regurgitate the horseshit known as Social Constructionism so popular among pseudo intellectuals intoxicated by the facile theories of Michel Foucalt: that gays never thought of themselves as in any way distinct from heterosexuals EXCEPT in behavior; that without a label EVERYONE understood we simply didn't exist—AS IF rocks and trees and whatever didn't exist before our evolutionary ancestors developed sign language and speech.

The best debunker of this nonsense is historian Rictor Norton, who has written about gay "Molly houses" and subculture in England going back to at least the 18th century, in his book "The Myth of the Modern Homosexual."

The idea that peopleare going to hate you any less if us show up in a Brooks Brother suit and a crew-cut is delusional.

And the tide is turning anyway, maybe it's high time that the public met us on our own terms, instead of theirs.

P.S. And the guy is hot too ;)

  10. Incidents in Jamaica and Atlanta are sounding way too similar.

  11. @Michael

Yeah, and as far as what we might call a homosexual "subculture" that can actually be traced back as far as late Republican Rome (ancient Greece, maybe, but that's a really, really complex subject...you will find couples in ancient Greece, yes, but not what I would define as a "subculture")

  12. HPV vaccine is available and HPV cure is available too. Get checked for STDs every 3 months at least. HPV-related cancers are still rare but are rising because people don't know their status.

Jamaica is horribly anti-gay. There absolutely needs to be more attention brought onto these countries across the country where gays are treated less than animals. No more money should go out to these inhumane countries.
