Watch: Matt Baume Talks to Lavi Soloway of 'Stop the Deportations' About Developments in DOMA and Immigration

Baume2

As we noted over the weekend, things seem to be moving quickly forward with regard to binational couples, DOMA, and immigration.

In his weekly update, Matt Baume of Stop8.org spoke with Lavi Soloway of Stop the Deportations about the case of Monica Alcota and Cristina Ojeda, which I posted about last week before this weekend's big news for binational gay couples.

Baume also discusses DOMA repeal, and a benefit by male models for marriage equality.

  1. Obama really made a great choice in refusing to defend the law in court. The abandonment by the government has deep implications for whether or not there is a rational basis for the law, if all three branches of government are rejecting it as unconstitutional.

  2. Some people have commented negatively on the (re)introduction of the Respect for Marriage Act in Congress this year. There have been complaints asking basically, why bother? and why didn't you do this while you had control of both houses, etc. Perhaps the RFM has little chance of passing a GOP controlled House, but its introduction and any legislative action on it act as an important adjunct to the efforts to overturn the law in Federal Court. Litigants can call the court's attention to the repeal effort in Congress, and the Executive Branch decision not to defend it, as an indication that DOMA's days are numbered. Now, all three branches of the government are engaged in the repeal of DOMA. This is a big boost to our efforts.

  3. You gotta be kidding me... this video isn't available in Germany??? How are German-American couples with exactly this problem supposed to watch this then? Ridiculous!

  4. Sorry about the video being unavailable in Germany! That caught me by surprise. I've researched the problem a bit and it looks like it might be because of music licensing issues related to the intro music at the top of the program. I'll see what I can do to fix that.
