Grindr Expands To Android Devices. What Comes Next?

GrindrLogo Mobile app Grindr announced today that they're expanding beyond just iPhones and BlackBerries to include Android devices.

The news wasn't a surprise, of course: the company, founded by Joel Simkhai, grew to 1.5 million users in 180 countries over the course of just two years, and is currently the most downloaded gay-themed app. The Android version was, quite simply, an inevitability.

But why, asks someone who has never used it, is Grindr so popular? While other apps are falling off or hit a plateau, Grindr keeps growing. What is so special about it? Is it the fact that it's instant and local? Knowing whom in your vicinity wants to hook up definitely cuts back on incessant messaging, and probably more than a few headaches.

So, if Grindr's instantaneous gratification is what makes it so appealing, what comes next? What other concept can be made instant, local and mobile?

I mean, Grindr built an entire company on the idea that gay men will hook up with just a picture and a direction, so what other simple concept can harnessed for mobile devices?

Note: This is an edited version of an earlier post.

  1. Grindr is a sex and hook up app for the sleazy, I wouldn't brag about their being an app expansion for that. Makes gays look incapable of connecting unless its sexual. And you wonder why so many out there are against gay marriage.

  2. I think Grindr is popular BECAUSE it's popular... at least in North America. I've downloaded similar apps on my iPhone like Qrushr and Jackd, that actually have better features (free push messages, "who viewed me" lists, chat rooms, etc.) that make finding and talking to someone easier, but because they have less profiles on them (again, in NA; Qrushr in Europe apparently is really popular), they aren't as useful as Grindr. So unless more people try other apps that are actually better than Grindr, Grindr will win out. If Grindr wants to secure the top spot, they should look at other apps and see what they are doing better.

  3. Tyler, you're wrong and your argument is weak. How is Grindr sexual? The app doesnt force anyone to be sexual lol. I don't care what it makes gays look like. Breeders already look crazy on judge Judy and divorce court. America is going to be a bigot country until it's not anymore, no point in trying to be someone your not, or act like hypocritical Christians. Be yourself, don't let anyone define you or how you choose to use grindr.

  4. Oh, Andrew... Seriously, if you can't figure out the difference between "who" and "whom," just use "who" only. Seriously.

  5. Here's the thing. Gaydar's iPhone app has to censor pictures in order to meet Apple requirements for its platform, even though you can go through Apple's Safari browser to see the uncensored material on Gaydar's website.

So it seems that, with the exception of Playboy and Penthouse apps, Safari is the only application that Apple allows for viewing adult content, and by "adult" I mean what an 19th century adult might be titillated by.

  7. Hey guys, a lot of you have brought up the issue of Grindr censoring profiles and pictures.

I know a lot of guys are really upset about this, and it's really disappointing that you can't show all of you as you want. That's why we've created the Closur App, providing geolocation based social networking to all devices, completely free, and no censorship or moderation.

Give us a try, closer men at
