Obama Needs to 'Get on With It' and Support Marriage Equality: VIDEO

Socarides

Equality Matters President Richard Socarides talked to CNN yesterday about the marriage equality battle in New York and about the President's lagging position on it.

"I would tell him if I were still advising him that the future is now. Stop trying to have it both ways....I would just tell him to get on with it."

Watch, AFTER THE JUMP...

Yesterday, the Washington Blade's Chris Johnson pressed Jay Carney on the President's position and whether it would "evolve" enough for him to come out in support of marriage equality at a fundraiser this week in New York. Carney said he didn't anticipate that.

  1. I am by no means an expert in politics but come on, people. It's even obvious to me that he's sitting on the fence because he doesn't want to hurt his chances of being re-elected. Sad but true. For some stupid reason, the Religious Right terrifies Democrats and Republicans equally. I expect a dramatic turnaround in his viewpoint on this after he is re-elected.

  2. I agree he's doing it because he wants to be reelected, but at some point you just have to bite the bullet and let go. If he "evolved" now people would forget by the election.

  3. If Obama were running for his first term now, he might be able to "get away with" being for marriage equality without having it hurt too much. The country is getting towards 50/50 on the issue, and it may be even better to get ahead of the future and support it, for these politicians. But Obama WILL NOT reverse himself before the 2012 election. He would be dubbed a "flip-flopper" which is apparently some sort of huge issue in politics. The flipping would be worse for him than the notion that he likes teh gay.

  4. OBAMA ALREADY IS A FLIP FLOPPER. HE SUPPORTED GAY MARRIAGE IN 1996 AND EVEN VOWED TO FIGHT ANY EFFORTS TO DENY GAY PEOPLE THE RIGHT TO MARRY, ONLY TO SPEND TWO YEARS DEFENDING DOMA AS PRESIDENT.

  5. It's about leadership. The previous president would take unpopular positions in his first term and ram them through anyway. He was re-elected, because he was a strong leader.

Obama so far has been weak. This is one area where he could show leadership on an issue that the majority of the country actually already agrees with, and he could shore up support with an important segment of Democrat voters.

He doesn't even have to show results, because the Republicans in the House won't play along, and everyone knows it.
