VA Lawmaker Says Bank's Gay Pride Flag 'Undermines the American Economy', Demands It Be Taken Down

Yesterday I posted about Richmond's Federal Reserve Bank and complaints it was receiving from citizens because it decided to fly the Gay Pride flag for the month of June.

Marshall Now an anti-gay lawmaker has stepped into the fray, according to the Times Dispatch:

Del. Robert G. Marshall, R-Prince William, is asking the Richmond Federal Reserve Bank to remove the rainbow flag flying below the American flag outside of the building, calling its presence “a serious deficiency of judgment by your organization, one not limited to social issues.”

In a letter to Richmond Fed President Jeffrey M. Lacker, Marshall says the homosexual behavior “celebrated” by the bank “undermines the American economy” and is a class six felony in Virginia.

“The Richmond Fed’s endorsement of costly, anti-social, immoral behavior is rejected by 6,000 years of Western Religious and moral teaching,” writes Marshall, who is among the General Assembly’s most conservative members and has long been outspoken on gay-rights issues.

You may recall that Marshall was the lawmaker who tried unsuccessfully earlier this year  to ban gays from serving in the Virginia National Guard

  1. So certain sex acts that have already been deemed legal by the US Supreme Court (in Lawrence v Texas) are STILL a "class six felony in Virginia"?!

This (unsurprisingly unf!ckable) idiot's ignorance of US Constitutional Law should automatically disqualify him from holding office in any US jurisdiction.

And should automatically qualify him for a steel-toed boot to the balls, administered by the meanest gay or lesbian Home Depot brickworks specialist we can find.

  2. The co-author of the Marshall-Newman anti-"anything that even looking like a marriage from afar"-amendment. No surprise here. He's running for U.S. Senate, trying to go to the right to George "Makaka" Allen, too, or is that Newman?

  5. I sure hope the bank doesn't back down. In fact, a nice put down of Marshall would be nice!

  6. If gays undermine the economy, then maybe if they round us up and deport us, the USA will return to full employment? ;-)

  7. Damn, we are powerful. These Kristians have accused us of causing: floods, tornadoes, earthquakes, droughts, plagues,The Rapture, and now economic downturn. If we are this powerful isn't it stupid to piss us off.

  10. Marshall's contact info

I just sent him a sternly worded comment asking for clarification on how exactly flying the rainbow flag is going to undermine the US economy.

  12. A quick scan of my AmEx bill and history will prove that this gay does nothing to "undermine the US economy"

  13. Undermines his many messages of hate.

we never really finished the civil war. We needed a court to try people for crimes against humanity.

His ancestors most likely would have been hanged and we wouldn't have to deal with this creep, who just has another group to hate.

In the name of God, no less.

  15. What can we expect from a republican? How can gay republicans support a party with so many right wing homophobes in it? Its beyond sick!

  16. Don't bother contacting this asshat. Instead, call the bank (804-697-8000) and ask to leave your message of support on their hotline. I just talked to a representative and she said they have been receiving "thousands" of calls, many of which I'm sure have been organized by so-called "pro-family" organizations. Please guys and gals, do not remain silent on this.

  17. it's bigots like Marshall that bring welcomed attention to the fight for equal rights. He may be a fundamentalist but he's no patriot....his views are anti American and the more of his kind come crawling up and out of the rocks the stronger this country will eventually be.

  18. So I looked up the "law" that the Fed is supposedly breaking and committing a Class 6 felony. Yup,. you guessed it! The old "Bestiality and Sodomy Law"

§ 18.2-361. Crimes against nature; penalty.

    A. If any person carnally knows in any manner any brute animal, or carnally knows any male or female person by the anus or by or with the mouth, or voluntarily submits to such carnal knowledge, he or she shall be guilty of a Class 6 felony, except as provided in subsection B.

    B. Any person who performs or causes to be performed cunnilingus, fellatio, anilingus or anal intercourse upon or by his daughter or granddaughter, son or grandson, brother or sister, or father or mother is guilty of a Class 5 felony. However, if a parent or grandparent commits any such act with his child or grandchild and such child or grandchild is at least 13 but less than 18 years of age at the time of the offense, such parent or grandparent is guilty of a Class 3 felony.

    C. For the purposes of this section, parent includes step-parent, grandparent includes step-grandparent, child includes step-child and grandchild includes step-grandchild.

  19. Yet another reason to be glad to have moved from Virginia, though I'm surprised and pleased that the Fed did this---in Richmond no less---knowing the controversy it would cause.

  20. Take a minute to tell him how you feel. It only takes two or three sentences.

Share it on FaceBook and twitter. It's the simplest way to make a difference.

  21. The old "Bestiality and Sodomy Law" quoted by Brian is very interesting:

"A. If any person ... carnally knows any male or female person by the anus or BY OR WITH THE MOUTH, or voluntarily submits to such carnal knowledge, he or she shall be guilty of a Class 6 felony"

That means even oral sex is illegal. Are u kidding me? Name one male in this country that hasn't either personally experienced oral sex or masturbated to porn clips of oral sex. This makes Class 6 felons out of most male Virginians, including the state legislators themselves.

You have to ask republicans what it is they really want. They seem to be a little mixed up: They don't like government regulations but yet they do want the government to be involved in regulating who gets to have an abortion; they despise the illegals but yet they hire them regularly (for construction, lawn mowing, whatever); they despise gays but yet their party members have the highest rate of involvement in gay sex scandals and statistically gay porn sells best in red states.

I can bet my savings that most of the republicans who vote for anti-gay laws have had at least one gay sexual encounter. I just don't understand these people. It's as if they feel guilty for their pleasure acts from the night before and they legislate against such acts in the morning. Oh, wait, never mind. I get it now. This is America, land of the religiously brainwashed schizophrenics!

  22. He's an economic idiot too: everyone knows the gays INCREASE property values.

And yes, MARK, many of the now moot sodomy laws include oral sex between opposite sex partners.

  24. Except inasmuch as Virginia's laws were at one time to disproportionately attack gay people, Blacks and other disenfranchised minorities, the letter of that statute has absolutely nothing to do with gay people. No one should assume that any gay person is automatically doing anything in that statute, nor that any heterosexual person Isn't (though the VAST majority of straight people would be felons... That is, of course, if all such laws had not already been declared null and void.
Robert Marshall is clearly an idiot on both legal and cultural matters. Not only is consensual adult sex not a felony in Virginia , but the rainbow flag has no connection to any particular sex act but is, rather, a cultural symbol of diversity and freedom for our community.
I haven't had a bank account in Virginia in years; otherwise I'd gladly switch to Richmond Federal Reserve Bank. (I also checked to see if they are publicly traded but it appears there's no ticker symbol.)

  25. If Robert Marshall is so concerned about
"costly, anti-social, immoral behavior" then perhaps he should start in his own backyard...
