VA Lawmaker Says Bank's Gay Pride Flag 'Undermines the American Economy', Demands It Be Taken Down

Yesterday I posted about Richmond's Federal Reserve Bank and complaints it was receiving from citizens because it decided to fly the Gay Pride flag for the month of June.

Marshall Now an anti-gay lawmaker has stepped into the fray, according to the Times Dispatch:

Del. Robert G. Marshall, R-Prince William, is asking the Richmond Federal Reserve Bank to remove the rainbow flag flying below the American flag outside of the building, calling its presence “a serious deficiency of judgment by your organization, one not limited to social issues.”

In a letter to Richmond Fed President Jeffrey M. Lacker, Marshall says the homosexual behavior “celebrated” by the bank “undermines the American economy” and is a class six felony in Virginia.

“The Richmond Fed’s endorsement of costly, anti-social, immoral behavior is rejected by 6,000 years of Western Religious and moral teaching,” writes Marshall, who is among the General Assembly’s most conservative members and has long been outspoken on gay-rights issues.

You may recall that Marshall was the lawmaker who tried unsuccessfully earlier this year  to ban gays from serving in the Virginia National Guard

  1. Federal Reserve banks are the banks used by commercial banks. I don't think they do business with the general public directly (at least, not in the sense of offering checking and saving accounts to the general public). They're a big part of how the value of US currency is maintained.

  2. This is a copy of the message I just sent Marshall's office: "As a former resident of Richmond, I was shocked by your appalling ignorance or disregard of the law. You should know (and probably do know) that in LAWRENCE v. TEXAS (02-102) 539 U.S. 558 (2003) 41 S. W. 3d 349, the U.S. Supreme Court invalidated sodomy laws in the 14 states which had not already done so themselves through legislative action, and Virginia was one of those 14 states. LAWRENCE v. TEXAS reversed and remanded BOWERS v. HARDWICKE 478 U.S. 186 (1986). Therefore, when you publically declare that sodomy is "a Class Six felony in Virginia" you are either woefully ignorant of the law or are an outright liar. Either case should disqualify you from serving as a Delegate from anywhere except perhaps Uganda." Here are his office numbers should you wish to call him: 703.361.5416 (office and fax). 703.853.4213 (cell).

  3. I suggest all LGBT folks avoid his state but send him postcards to tell him how much they spent somewhere else.

  4. "6,000 years of Western Religious and moral teaching" - How can that possibly be correct? The cults he subscribes to all claim that the Earth is only 4600 years old!
If there ever was someone who could profit from reading The Age of Reason, by Thomas Paine, one of the FOUNDING FATHERS of the United States, it's this homunculus.
