Marcus Bachmann Defends Clinic's 'Ex-Gay' Therapy, Claims Tape on Which He Called Gays 'Barbarians' Was Doctored

In a new interview with the Minneapolis Star Tribune, Marcus Bachmann discusses the undercover operation by Truth Wins Out and defends his clinic's gay "reparative therapy" practices.

Marcus_bachmann He also claims a recording of him discussing his views on homosexuality is doctored:

"We have to understand: Barbarians need to be educated,'' Bachmann's voice is heard saying on the tape. "They need to be disciplined. Just because someone feels it or thinks it doesn't mean that we are supposed to go down that road.''

Bachmann said that someone must have doctored the recording of the interview, in which he addressed child discipline as well as homosexuality and sex education.

The recording also became a focus of media attention this week, including ABC's "Nightline."

"I was talking in reference to children. Nothing, nothing to do with homosexuality. That's not my mindset. That's not my belief system. That's not the way I would talk," Bachmann said.

Bachmann tried to explain that they don't force treatment on anyone but do it at the client's wish, and that the Truth Wins Out investigator came under false pretenses:

He didn't deny that he or other counselors at Bachmann & Associates have attempted to convert gay patients, but he said it is not a special interest of the business and would only be attempted at the client's request.

"Will I address it? Certainly we'll talk about it," Bachmann said. "Is it a remedy form that I typically would use? ... It is at the client's discretion."

He said the business mainly treats people who accept religious faith as part of their healing process -- typically for depression or anxiety.

"We don't have an agenda or a philosophy of trying to change someone,'' Bachmann said.

  1. Very different answer than he was giving before the undercover investigation. He was saying that they did NOT engage in gay "reparative therapy", EVER! Now he says that they only do it at the patient's request.

You can tell when the man is lying; his lipth move.

  4. OK, now dig the hole deeper...Children are barbarians who must be disciplined. Spare the rod and spoil the child?

  9. Sorry, dude, you can't un-ring that bell. Your LIE about the tape being doctored makes you look even worse.

    Pathetic.

  10. He's the worst kind of gay, self-hating, delusional and destructive.

  11. Treatment is at the client's discretion??

Wonder what the AMA would say about that. Or even the APA. Do you'r'e willing to apply treatments that are discredited--and even harmful--if the client wants them? What kind of maniac are you?

  12. Sure. The question: Why does speak now, not before, if the tape was doctored? (Yeah right!) Why sudden need? Something is going on behind the scene.
Marcus Bachmann lost all of his creditbility long time ago.

  13. Like wife, like husband?
Neither of them has any shame, so pointing out their hypocrisies serves no purpose at all. I just hope they die off soon.

  14. The phrase "someone must have doctored" is entirely different from "someone doctored". One is a fairy tale he wishes was true; the other would at least be an outright accusation, though still untrue.

    Psycho.

"Marcus, what happened to that cookie?" "I don't know, mommy, someone must have eaten it!"

  15. I find it particularly interesting that he is clearly aware of the taboo surrounding both his comments and ex-gay therapy -- he's doing all he can to make it "sound better" when, under his belief system, performing ex-gay therapy should be something he's proud of.

The question I have is, if he feels shame about doing it to the point that he lies/alters the description of what he's doing, what does that say about his actual beliefs? Since he's trying to downplay his involvement, obviously he has some feelings that what he's doing is wrong.

  16. here is a man with questionable credentials providing questionable treatment taking federal funds for this treatment from a program his wife finds questionable. he becomes the victim???? how come the bachmann play the victim so well? michelle hasn't given a straight answer to this since it began. How many jobs has this clinic created versus how many people has it hurt?.

  17. Typical of right wing antigay bigots - "I was misquoted, I didn't say that, I didn't mean that, my comments were taken out of context."

  18. So he was refering to children when he made the remark about barbarians?

Yeah, that's so much better. WTF?

I'm just glad he's not my DADDY. In any sense of that word.

  19. Is there nothing the Bachmanns won't lie about? You can't trust the straight one OR the gay one. Shame on Miss Marcus.
