Gay Glitter 'Barbarians' Descend on Bachmann Clinic

Nick Espinosa, the activist responsible for glittering Newt Gingrich, and several others today launched a colorful action at Marcus Bachmann's clinic where Bachmann is said to practice gay "reparative therapy".

Writes Espinosa in a press release:

Today a horde of gay barbarians descended upon Michele and Marcus Bachmann’s “pray away the gay” clinic and demanded that Marcus come out and discipline them for their “deviant” behavior.

Marcus Bachmann, who conducts “reparative therapy” at the clinic intended to convert homosexuals, has said that gays are “barbarians who need to be disciplined.” The horde requested to speak directly with Bachmann and experience some “discipline” for themselves.

When Marcus was no where to be found, the barbarians glittered the empty waiting room and reception area while chanting, “You can’t pray away the gay — baby, I was born this way!”

The action was organized by the same young man who threw glitter on Newt Gingrich, starting a national trend in political protest of anti-LGBT sentiments from political candidates and campaigns.

“Michele and Marcus Bachmann think gay people are barbarians?” asked LGBT activist Nick Espinosa. “I think its clear to everyone who the real barbarians are, based on the Bachmanns’ archaic views on LGBT equality.”

I expect we'll see a video of some sort soon.

  1. I just love the heck out of this!

  2. I love this. It's a quirky, colourful, non-destructive way to protest these people's views and comments

  3. They should be charged with trespassing and vandalism. Let me come into your home or work and throw glitter all around. You'll have it everywhere for weeks. They will likely have to have a professional service come in and clean.

Vandalism is not the way to go. Go ahead and stand outside all day and protest. But this is just plain stupid and VERY IMMATURE.

  4. And people wonder why we are not taken seriously. Jesus, what 12 year old came up with this notion thinking it would actually /help/ us?

  5. They do realize that it's not going to be Marcus Bachmann who vaccums up all that glitter, right?

  6. Another embarrassing moment for us in the gay community. Why act like this? Gay folks are not about glitter and acting foolish.

  7. Idiots. The Bachmanns are idiots why do some gay men and women think it's a "great idea" to respond in kind? F*in' stupid.

  8. Sorry, but I think this is great. And: oh boo hoo that they'll need to fire a pro cleaning service!

  9. STUPID and VERY counterproductive. This is a perfect example of how what feels good isn't always good for you or your cause. The people live in the world of a five year old child where what ever comes to your mind you do without one moments thought about responsibility or consequences.

Does ANYONE really believe that this action will in any way produce a positive outcome or that the positives of this action will outweigh the negatives? I can think of no benefit coming from this other than tickling the participants' egos and making some people laugh. But I can certainly see this causing people to believe that gay people are unserious, vandalizing, childish brats and increasing support for, or at least sympathy for, Marcus and Michele Bachmann.

For the first time, and probably last time, in my life I agree with something Chris Barron said.

  10. Oops. Of course I meant HIRE.

Man, why is everyone here so cranky today? Is it the heat?

Posted by: Michael in Toronto | Jul 21, 2011 12:53:28 PM

  11. yeah. This was really dumb, and sets back real progress we might be making. This is exactly why everyone thinks all gay people are glitter toting flakes who like to play dress up.

  12. What a bunch of humourless Yanks!

Posted by: Michael in Toronto | Jul 21, 2011 1:00:45 PM

  13. So let me make sure I understand what happened here: Bachmann calls us barbarians, so we dress up to look like barbarians, then storm into his office like barbarians, and then essentially trash his office. Like barbarians.

  14. Embarrassing and counterproductive.

  15. What it amounts to, folks, is a bunch of shameless media whores (some of whom may not even have been Gay) using the Bachmann controversy to snatch five minutes of fame for themselves. Reprehensible. It's often said that Dan Savage is the spokesman for the so-called Gay community. Well, this is the community he really speaks for.

  16. I'm divided. On one hand I love it, on the other hand I'm uncomfortable playing into their idea that all GLBTs are like this. Maybe that's the brilliance of doing stunts like this.

  17. Stupid, childish, and counterproductive.

Arrest em. Not only do I not care, but I actively support their prosecution. Disagreeing with someone is not a justification for criminal acts.

Try this on for size: religious fundamentalists don't like the legitimization of gay "lifestyle." So they storm a gay center, shouting, throwing black and red (evil colors, if you will) glitter everywhere, shooting silly string, and plastering the place with pictures of the devil.

Y'all would be screaming for their heads.

Well this is exactly the same thing.

  18. it's a waste of time; this just gives ammo to our opponents

  19. Have any of you cowards ever heard of the Boston Tea Party. Sometimes you gotta mess some sh*t up if you want results. Please step to the back of the movement if you can't stand the heat.

    Posted by: Toutwest | Jul 21, 2011 1:36:30 PM

  20. Tout, you are a moron if you think this juvenile display is a step forward in our movement. No one will take a bunch of near adults dressed up like Lost Boy rejects tossing glitter seriously. NO ONE.

If you cannot comprehend something as simply as that, well, I don't know what to tell you. Go back to Nevernever Land and let the adults handle things.

    Posted by: LiamB | Jul 21, 2011 1:42:52 PM

  21. What a great way to protest being called a barbarian - by proving them right through your actions! Awesome! Gold star! Next time, instead of throwing glitter, how about putting on some chaps and having sex in the waiting room! That'll show 'em!

    Posted by: TJ | Jul 21, 2011 1:56:33 PM

  22. Wow, way to make a point...by proving their point? A completely childish and counterproductive "demonstration" by these folks. At least it give me hope that some people here recognize it for what it was, a lame stunt.

    Posted by: Lisa G | Jul 21, 2011 1:56:34 PM

  23. Equating this to the Boston Tea Party is probably the depth of cretinism among a rich assortment above.

Tea was an extremely valuable commodity and "food stuff" in colonial America, and the act itself was SPECIFICALLY about "taxation without representation" as the British Parliment, which would allow no colonist to be a member, set the amount of tax they had to pay. I'd guess none of these, yes, shallow media whores, have ever heard the song "Glitter and Be Gay"—but it doesn't refer to THAT type of "glitter" nor THAT type of "gay" anymore than the Bachmann "clinic" is about "converting" glitter.

  24. @LISA G - jinx! ;>)

    Posted by: TJ | Jul 21, 2011 2:01:06 PM

  25. I find it so entertaining to watch the scolds come out of the woodwork and criticize any and every creative protest. Yes, yes, let's just call our representatives, make a donation to HRC and, beyond that, we'll just fold our hands and wait for everything to get better.

Those of you that are getting the vapors about this being "counterproductive" and a "setback for our movement," need to realize that making fun of the the Bachmann's can be a very effective way of pointing out how ridiculous they are. You also need to re-calibrate your outrage meter. Glittering is vandalism? Um, OK, maybe. But they didn't burn the dang building down. A vacuum cleaner will pick up glitter, ya know.

If you want to, I don't know, "dialogue" with the Bachmann's or whatever, why don't you head on over to the GOProud meeting and wait for the phone to ring, OK? Take care now. Buh bye.
