Collapsing Glacier Rocks Tourist Boat in Alaska: VIDEO

Glacier

Global warming up too close.

The videographer writes: "While viewing the glacier in Tracy Arm Fjord in Alaska, a 200 foot tall piece of ice collapsed and sent chucks of flying ice and a huge wave that rocked the boat. A woman was injured and broke her leg."

KTUU confirms: "A 60-year-old woman suffered a compound fracture of her right leg Thursday after the glacier tour boat she was aboard in Tracy Arm was hit by ice chunks and a wave from a nearby calving glacier, according to the U.S. Coast Guard."

Watch, AFTER THE JUMP...

  5. Glaciers have been calving for millennia. What is new and tragic is tour boats getting real close to falling walls of ice. This has nothing to do with global warming. Nothing at all. I blame the Gays....

  6. The power of the gays cannot be overestimated: earthquakes, volcanoes, tsunami. Kathy Griffen, and now calving glaciers. Just wait until we get really mad.

  7. I would have considered that getting my money's worth if I were on that tour. Yep, glaciers have been calving forever, so what?
If I were cruising to glaciers for the purpose of seeing them, I'd thrill if I happened to catch the one-in-a-million chance of perceptible motion happening as I cruised by.

And what's wrong with EcoTourism? Do eco-tourists create typical human damage or are they among the most concerned humans about the eco-systems, as perhaps indicated by their willingness to pay thousands to witness them?

  8. Check out all the BLACK SMOKE coming out of the so called "EcoTourism" Boat. Talk about damaging the environment....

  9. That boat was well within the "kill zone" of that glacier. It was WAYYYYYY to close. The captain could have gotten everyone killed! The Coast Guard ought to review his certification.

I'm all for people visiting national parks and seeing nature first hand, but this is one of those things you need to see from a distance. If people want to get a cool picture or video of the calving, get a longer lens for the camera/camcorder!

  10. That boat captain should be shelved! That was unbelievably irresponsible.

  11. A glacier that runs to the sea only breaks like this when it is growing. If it were diminishing in size due to warming or anything else it would retreat away from the ocean and you wouldn't see this.
