Fox News: Don't Let Your Kids Watch 'Dancing With the Stars'

Chazbono Conservative America's campaign to preserve the sanctity of Dancing with the Stars was always absurd, but now it's getting frightening.

Writing for Fox News, a conservative doctor is calling on parents to ban their kids from watching the show because Chaz Bono will be appearing on it. The article is so transphobic that it's traumatic to read - and gruesome. Dr. Keith Ablow acts as if Dancing with the Stars will be giving viewers front-row seats to a sex-change operation:

The last thing vulnerable children and adolescents need, as they wrestle with the normal process of establishing their identities, is to watch a captive crowd in a studio audience applaud on cue for someone whose for an identity culminated with the removal of her breasts, the injection of steriods and, perhaps one day soon, the fashioning of a make-shift phallus to replace her vagina.

It is a toxic and unecessary byproduct of the tragic celebration of transgender surgery that millions of young people who do watch "Dancing with the Stars" will have to ponder this question: Maybe my problems really stem from the fact that I'm a girl inside a boy's body (or a boy inside a girls body). Maybe I'm not a tomboy; I'm just a boy! Maybe I'm not just being bullied because I'm a sensitive, reflective young man interested in flowers, not football. Maybe I'm not just uncertain about mysexuality. Maybe I'm a girl! Maybe all this angst and suffering I'm feeling as I emerge into puberty and pass thought it isn't just because I'm changing, but because I should change completely - and have my breasts removed or my penis amputated.

As of this writing, the article has 10k Facebook shares.

  1. Boycott everything Fox. Hit 'em where it hurts most.

  2. Without some scary thing to threaten their viewers with, Fox News has nothing. It is their stock in trade. Now it is kids wanting to amputate their penises because they saw Chaz dancing. Young people are smarter than Ablow thinks, and besides, there is extensive counseling before any transgendered person has surgery.

  5. fox news is a total disgrace. they do nothing but spread hate and bigotry. they would make
goebbels blush. i was hoping the british would put murdoch in jail.

  6. At least some of those 10,000 Facebook shares are people sharing this for the same reason you are: righteous public shaming of bigoted idiots.

  7. So seeing a transgender man dancing on TV will propel kids to amputate their penises and girls to remove their breasts?

Now I understand why they are also racists. If you see people on the screen with melatonin on their skins, all wholesome kids will want to surgically alter their skin to a darker shade. This will be the end of the white race, just like a transgendered man dancing on TV will bring about the end of men and women as we know them.

  8. This program featured a contestant who was an unwed teenage mother, but no one at Fox made a peep about what a terrible example it was to children.

Maybe because that contestant's mother is the right wing bigot's Madonna, Sarah Palin.

  9. ugh. disgusting and also clearly misinformed. trans-women, for example, do not "amputate" their penises! and using the term "sexuality" when you mean "sex" or "gender"? aside from hate, there's clearly a lot of ignorance about facts here.

  10. Well, I'd expect nothing less from the quack who co-wrote Glenn Pig-Boy Beck's book on parenting.

  11. I knew of one man who, as a teenager, wanted to be a woman. He would put oranges down his T-shirt to make himself look as if he had breasts. He would also push his penis down towards the back of his pants so it looked as if he nothing in his crotch area. He truly wanted to be a woman.

A few years later, he was a grown-up, strapping young man, a fine sample of masculinity if ever there was one.

My point is that youngsters sometimes do experience gender uncertainty and that it is only temporary as part of a journey in life. We shouldn't be rushing to assign a category to them nor should we be encouraging genital surgery.

  12. This surprises whom?

  13. Jason - Just because he was a strapping young man doesn't mean he didn't still want to be a woman.

  14. Stephen,

I know for a fact that the guy is now very proud of the fact that he's a man. He is extremely relieved that he didn't go down the surgical route.

In any case, I think all humans have a bit of experimentation in them. We shouldn't rush to over-analyze and over-categorize everbody, and then assign a future path that may not be in that person's interests. Surgically removing your body parts is an extremely drastic step.

  15. There are many good reasons not to watch DWTS, but this is not one of them.

    Posted by: anon | Sep 3, 2011 7:53:48 PM

  16. Jason - no one rushes to encourage categorization, much less surgery. Using Gender Identity Disorder as a framework (and I'm aware that "disorder" can assume judgement, even though it shouldn't), a person has to have long-standing issues, experiences, feelings - evidence, really, that he or she absolutely believe that his or her gender does not match his or her body, before one "qualifies" - before one rises to the level of a diagnosable condition. No responsible doctor or psychological professional accepts, without thorough investigation, a person's pronouncement that he or she are "trapped in the wrong body." Playing with gender, whether it's playing dress-up, performing in drag, or putting oranges up your t-shirt does not rise to the level of life dissatisfaction experienced by transgendered individuals. And responsible professional is going to perform surgery or assign a label without plenty of evidence.

  17. "We shouldn't be rushing to assign a category to them nor should we be encouraging genital surgery."

Who's rushing? Who's encouraging? No one. Any more than seeing gay people on TV encourages kids to rush out and be gay. Chaz Bono appearing on DWTS is hardly going to send flocks of teenagers to the surgeon to have body parts added or taken away. (Not that that's even possible, since it is a long and monitored process--no such thing as drive-thru gender reassignment.)

Possibly, the show will make some young person more comfortable experimenting with their gender identity, whether or not that eventually leads to hormones and surgery. Possibly, a few people will have their minds opened up and they'll be able to see trans issues in a more empathetic way. Or possibly, if this moronic Fox News piece is any indication, people will just dig deeper into their hatred and ignorance. Clearly, there's plenty of the latter to go around.

  18. Your economy is in the toilet, you have viable Presidential candidates like Michelle Bachmann, Rick Perry and Rick Santorum... and yet your country seems obsessed with a transgendered performer on DWTS. Keep your eyes on the prize America or you will soon be the United States of China.

  20. FOX will do anything for ratings and they've sunk to a new low. Even their stupid viewers will be tuning in. The is the best press DWTS ever received and the idiots at FOX just gave ABC another boost. Hell, I hate the show and I'll put it on just to boost their ratings.

    Team Chaz

  21. "FOX: Don't Let Your Kids Watch 'Dancing With the Stars."

I prefer the axiom, "mamas don't let your babies grow up to be cowboys."

No offense to cowboys. It's just that y'all have a dangerous profession (much less dangerous than dancing with stars). Incidentally, your butts tend to be fabulous so kudos to you.

  22. The worst possible outcome in a democracy is to ban or restrict entire groups of people from appearing on TV simply because they are who they are. During parts of the twentieth century, American TV either banned or severely restricted people from appearing on TV based on either race or public acknowledgment of their sexuality.

In this particular case, the targets of censorship are transgendered people. But this desire for censorship on the part of Fox News is always poison in a democracy. If there are people who disapprove of a TV show based on the identity of someone who appears on it, they need to follow the customary guideline of the 21st century: no likey, no watchey.

Is it OK for Chaz to breathe the same air as the rest of us, or is that unacceptable too?
