Fox News: Don't Let Your Kids Watch 'Dancing With the Stars'

Chazbono Conservative America's campaign to preserve the sanctity of Dancing with the Stars was always absurd, but now it's getting frightening.

Writing for Fox News, a conservative doctor is calling on parents to ban their kids from watching the show because Chaz Bono will be appearing on it. The article is so transphobic that it's traumatic to read - and gruesome. Dr. Keith Ablow acts as if Dancing with the Stars will be giving viewers front-row seats to a sex-change operation:

The last thing vulnerable children and adolescents need, as they wrestle with the normal process of establishing their identities, is to watch a captive crowd in a studio audience applaud on cue for someone whose for an identity culminated with the removal of her breasts, the injection of steriods and, perhaps one day soon, the fashioning of a make-shift phallus to replace her vagina.

It is a toxic and unecessary byproduct of the tragic celebration of transgender surgery that millions of young people who do watch "Dancing with the Stars" will have to ponder this question: Maybe my problems really stem from the fact that I'm a girl inside a boy's body (or a boy inside a girls body). Maybe I'm not a tomboy; I'm just a boy! Maybe I'm not just being bullied because I'm a sensitive, reflective young man interested in flowers, not football. Maybe I'm not just uncertain about mysexuality. Maybe I'm a girl! Maybe all this angst and suffering I'm feeling as I emerge into puberty and pass thought it isn't just because I'm changing, but because I should change completely - and have my breasts removed or my penis amputated.

As of this writing, the article has 10k Facebook shares.

  1. I'm really proud of so many of you for sticking up for Chaz. I know it is because you have faced the same kind of bigotry, discrimination, hatred and bullying you are seeing from the Republican right wing. I have always been at a loss to understand why any gay person would be a "Log Cabin Republican". These are the people the gay community has to really worry about. Kudos to you gay community.

  2. Chaz is obese and needs serious medical intervention. If ABC was truly interested in putting forth a positive image of trans people, they would gave booked the "pregnant man" who apparently has gotten into tip top shape. Instead of this triple chin monstrosity. But of course, all ABC is interested in is a Freak Show that brings the ratings. Chaz is incredibly fat and turns my stomach...

  3. >Chaz is incredibly fat and turns my stomach<

Wow. Just wow. My natural impulse to mistrust and hate all others has totally been activated.

  4. @ Pedro,
DWTS is a reality show for the purpose of ENTERTAINMENT! It is not the Doctor Oz show, nor is it pretending to be a health show. And surprise, they want ratings!!! That is why they had the Palin daughter there.

The truth of the matter is that the majority of Americans are overweight, Chaz is a true representative of Americans today.

I don't watch the show, but this season I'm recording it.

    Go Chaz!

  5. At the end of the day, everyone is going to have a hater.

  6. I am glad to see that ABC hasn't given in to this hideous propaganda and that they've A) recruited and B) stood by their choice in contestants.

As much as people hate on the Palin girl, maybe she can inspire another unwed teenage mother to not be a victim and make something of herself. Much like I hope Chaz can inspire people to be more accepting of gender identities. We, as a community of gay men, are very quick to judge trans people and even lesbians. I've even been guilty myself, but with exposure comes acceptance. It's really good to see that in 30 comments only one was negative towards Chaz. We are all evolving and that's certainly a good thing.

  7. Will any hardcore Fox viewers watch DTWS anyways? The less viewers that would vote for the football jock or the lame Z-string star means a better chance for Chaz or Carson. Let them get the limelight for winning.

  8. Yes, Woodroad34D, I think hardcore Fox News viewers do and will watch DWTS. They seem to get a lot of energy from hating and being outraged, so they will tune in to get their fix of outrage. They will watch under the guise of "doing their righteous duty" of cataloging how many times Chaz's transgenderism is mentioned and then report back to their fellow outraged, righteous haters.

  9. Why are the Faux News idiots so frantically busy attacking Chaz -- and, by extension, all trans people? Because he matters. Because every time a person who doesn't fit in with their Leave It to Beaver stereotype appears on TV, it is a small step forward in the fight for equality. It is another piece of evidence that there are *many* ways to be in the world. It opens another door of possibility and freedom and celebration of ALL of humanity. They only hate him because he is making a difference.

  10. >they only hate him because he is making a difference<

    And different = bad.

They hate us for our freedom...

  11. I'm surprised they didn't encourage Catholic churches to open babysitting centers for us to send the kids to while watching "Dancing With the Stars" to give the off-duty priests something to do.

  12. i propose that any female that appears on the program who has had breast augmentation must have it officially revealed by certified form as part of the screening procedures also.

i know, it's mostly a no-brainer in that they are really easy to spot, but i think it should be part of the official record to keep the show's treatment of contestants equal.

one other question - WHY would anyone watch this stupid show to begin with?

    Posted by: mike/ | Sep 4, 2011 11:48:10 AM

  13. I knew I was gay when I was about 4 years old. I know it is different for everyone but I do NOT believe that a child will be influenced by a dance show. This one more reason why I and my partner NEVER watch FOX. If I could totally delete the station I would.

    Posted by: Peter | Sep 4, 2011 12:01:51 PM

  14. Wait -- how is it that the Fox author believes the impressionable children watching the show will come to know Chaz's medical history? Either the kids will already know about the gender spectrum and will therefore be unfazed by Chaz's existence, or else they won't know, and won't realize Chaz is any different from the other contestants.

It seems the author's *real* worry is that kids who've been trained to dislike transfolk will watch and say, "Hey! This guy's not so bad!" If that's the author's point -- whatta tool!

  15. As a young child, my siblings and I watched The Carol Burnett Show every week with my parents, who loved her. When Carol left her husband and remarried...out the door went her show. We were no longer allowed to watch Carol Burnett.
My mother...she's 85 now...still can't watch TV...except for Little House on the Prarie. We can't mention Carol Burnett, Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson...the list is mommy's company.
Grow up you old fools...we're able to make our own choices in life just fine and they don't concern you!!!

  16. I'll not comment on the ridiculousness of the Dr's comment. Rather, as a single gay dad, I'd like to offer an opinion re: children. WE DON'T GIVE THEM ENOUGH CREDIT. My 8yo understands that people can be born in the wrong body. It's a feeling thing. They get that. 'Nuf said.

Posted by: Chris Harris | Sep 4, 2011 4:33:17 PM

  17. Children these days ARE smarter than we give them credit for. My girls are smart enough to watch something and form their own opinion about hating something or not. One of them @ 14 has even created a "Rise Up" against hate campaign just to make people aware that it is not acceptable. They personally know several people in the GLBT community and are actively fighting to stop the hate against them in their school. We have never watched "DWTS" but we will this season just to cheer Chaz on. It takes alot of bravery to put yourself out in front of millons of people that you know are not completely accepting.

  18. Don't watch Chaz Bono on DWTS, but do tune in to Family Guy. Where is Fox coming from?

  19. Jesus how stupid people can be. When I was a kid I never knew nothing about transgendered peolple and I didnt get any right information. Well, it didnt do anything good for me, only made me almost kill myself beacause I didnt knew I could go through transition and live happy normal life. And sure as hell it didnt stop me being transgendered.

  20. Funny, the fundamentalists never had a problem with Milton Berle being in drag on virtually every variety show from the late 1940s until the late 1980s. (look him up youngsters; my father made me watch him when I was a kid, it did not turn me gay; and I've never done drag.)

And if the fundamentalists don't like TV, well, then, the Amish route is open to them.

My problem though, is not that fundies don't like this or that -- it's that they aim to tell me what to like or not and how to believe while doing it.

And the current Republican crop of creeps is about to start arguing over whether Perry's Methodism, Santorum's Catholicism, Romney's Mormonism or Bachmann's Evangelicalism is the very best sort of Christianity that should be followed; While the Democrats are preaching big government and state-sponsored crony capitalism a la Mussolini. It's not a pretty picture no matter how one looks at it.

  21. I think DwtS is wholly irresponsible inviting Chastity Bono to be in the new season cast.

She is NOT a celebrity! She is the daughter of celebrities, who has never ever made a living on her own merits but instead practiced parasitism living off Sonny and Cher's reputation as their daughter.

How confused is she? First she comes out of the closet as a Lesbian. She becomes an activist for gay rights, which I applauded.

Then, she disappeared from public view and came back with a double mastectomy, while shooting up with synthetic testosterone, broadcasting her name change and demanding she now be referred to as a man!
When she still has female reproductive/sexual organs below the waist! Because she claims altering herself between the legs won't work to give her a sex life she can enjoy.

So now, if we're suppose to believe she has always felt like a man inside, why won't she commit to being a man head to toe? Instead of part way, because her priority is a big penis, that she claims isn't possible with today's surgical techniques. When we all know that's a lie, because there are implants that can be surgically installed that work and give the full appearance of male genitalia.

What Chastity is doing now is working to make transgenders accepted in society. Just like she did as a Lesbian, which she still is,stomping for equal rights for gays. Which she now disavows! Claiming she was never a gay rights activist.

So what's next Chastity? What are you going to be next? Pick something! Besides miserable failure as a ball room dancer, yet raging success as the punch line of a DwtS producer who thinks you'll look like a magnificent freak while acquiring a gay viewership for the network!

No one needs to tolerate a bigot like Chastity Bono. Yes, bigot! Figure it out.

  22. This weekend I said goodbye to a dear friend, 24 years old, trans f2m. He was heading back to the midwest to take care of his dying older sister, possibly having to be the one to decide whether to withdraw life support very, very soon. He will also raise her children as his own. Despite being in this crisis, he spent last night performing in a fund raiser for a local HIV/AIDS charity.

In my book, Jayson is more man than any of these freaks on the conservative right will ever be. He is more human than any of these people at Faux News will ever hope to be. He is more Christian than any bigot on the religious right can ever aspire to be. Jayson, you rock, man! You have my undying support!

  23. I can't even get angry about this because it's just too comical. This whole hoopla about Chaz has hit new lows of absurdity and moved their arguments into lala land. First, who cares? Pregnant teens, crooked politicians, porn stars....Yeah, protect the Sanctity of DWTS. Secondly, no child or teen would even know about Chaz being transgender unless their parents first tell them, then tell them how disgusting what they just heard is. Let the far right rant. En masse they've become like Fred Phelps and the rest of the country is seeing it.

  24. What exactly is he a Doctor of? Because he should know better, and be ashamed of himself. I always find Fox News a joke, is't Fox the same Co. that has shows like Married with Children? The Simpsons? Etc? Their Holier than thou attitude is laughable. While I am at it shut up Bill.

  25. You got to be kidding me. Butt out, if you don't want to watch Chaz then don't watch it. I am going to watch him dance with my 6 grandkids (4 girls and 2 boys) In my opinion keep your opinion to yourself. You are still living in the dark ages.
