GLAAD Calls on NHL to Take Action on 'Faggot' Slur

GLAAD called on the Philadelphia Flyers and NHL to take action over Flyer Wayne Simmonds' anti-gay slur toward New York Rangers' Sean Avery at a preseason game last night.

Simmonds "Hate speech and anti-gay slurs have no place on the ice rink," said GLAAD Acting President Mike Thompson. "The word that Simmonds used is the same word that is hurled at LGBT youth on the playground and in our schools, creating a climate of intolerance and hostility. He should not only apologize for this anti-gay outburst, but the Philadelphia Flyers and the NHL have a responsibility to take action and educate their fans about why this word is unacceptable."

GLAAD is in dialogue the Philadelphia Flyers as well as the National Hockey League (NHL) about specific next steps.

  1. This is the first black professional hockey player I have seen. Too bad it had to be this way.

  2. Actually, Simmonds is hardly the first black hockey player.

However, what makes this incident even more interesting is that HBO started following the Flyers and Rangers for the 24/7 All Access show for the teams, since both teams will be playing in the Winter Classic in Philadelphia on Jan 2, 2012.

Current reports have Simmonds being fined $2500 for the slur, which is the maximum amount a player can be fined under the current NHL CBA

  3. I've been a huge NHL fan for years. But if they don't come down hard on Simmonds, I'm DONE. No matter if I'll miss the only sport I follow or not.

  4. Great. He should be fined. The NHL should educate their players and the fans on acceptable behavior. Think of it this way, had Sean Avery screamed out in the public arena the racist slur F* N* the ACLU et al would have gone ballistic and demanded Avery be removed from the Professional league entirely. Gay kids are killing themselves because they believe their life as a gay person is less than everyone else's. That's crazy. Some of the greatest people on earth have been gay but as long as we allow our sports figures (and other role models) to degrade gay people there are those of us who will feel they are less then the rest. We don't deserve that.

  5. Glad to see something is being done here. Other leagues have taken productive steps to control and eliminate the issue of homophobia within the sport. Too bad it has to take a homophobic incident to spur action.

  6. ... and then there's the local sports reporter on the radio here.. who says people should back off since what happens on the rink.. is totally okay. I wonder if he was called a "f*****g n*****r" what the reaction would be.....

  7. I agree it was not a good move on his part. But I wish I could find the same outrage over when fans were throwing banana peels onto the ice in a recent game of his. And although Avery is pro-gay, who's to say Simmonds hadn't been subjected to racist abuse on the ice and just lost it?

  8. Avery is pro-Avery. You guys don't know Sean Avery. Ask women who may have dated him when he was a Detroit Red Wing what he is really like.

    That's all I'm saying.

Except that he's also the guy who told another guy that he was getting "sloppy seconds" about a girl ON LIVE TV.

He is a womanizing piece of crap, IMO, the type of guy that would pretend to be crazy about someone until he sleeps with them and then dumps them without a backwards glance. Yes, this is the type of guy that Sean Avery who might have hung out in downtown Detroit trolling for nice people who were just trying to get a master's degree seems to behave like.

To the women with whom he's left a string of broken hearts...not a lot of sympathy for him, I'm sure, nor do they believe he is this great big champion of gay rights all of a sudden considering that he may have possibly used homophobic slurs in the past.

    Possibly and allegedly.

  9. Good point RIN, also, just the mere fact that Sean seems incredibly violent with his team-mates does not make him a role model for gay rights that I really appreciate, sorry. I find sports violence appalling.

  10. At least he got the max fine. $2500 is an expensive slip of the lip.

The real fix here is to get them to realize what the word means, to those it hurts the most.
