Newt Gingrich: Gay Marriage A 'Temporary Aberration'

GingrichGayMarriage Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich appeared in Iowa for a campaign rally today and was asked by an audience member how he feels about gay marriage.

In addition to reiterating his opposition to equality, Gingrich described same-sex nuptials as a "temporary aberration."

"I believe that marriage is between a man and woman,” he said, according to the Des Moines Register. “It has been for all of recorded history and I think this is a temporary aberration that will dissipate. I think that it is just fundamentally goes against everything we know.”

Of course Gingrich is wrong: there's no way LGBT activists and their allies are suddenly going to forget about gay marriage, one of the most pressing political issues in the States today. In fact, more and more Americans support marriage equality, and Gingrich's comments show how far removed he and his Republican peers are from the American zeitgeist.

  1. Why won't anyone ever frickin' ask these people followups, like:

How can you have such an ardent stance on traditional marriage and yet abuse the sanctity of marriage yourself with constant affairs and remarriages?

They let Trump and Gingrich slide on this crap--oh, they might press it a little, but they ought to call them outright hypocrites.

Something hit home today when the postal worker made a comment about my dog. She said her "partner" and her would love to have one like that. And it like struck me forcibly that this woman is forced to say "partner" because she doesn't know how I, a stranger representing society, will take her saying "girlfriend" or "wife".

It made me feel very sad because "partner" is so...bleh. I can't tell from "partner" if they've been together a few months like a girlfriend, or years like a spouse.

There is no way to show that you are proud and committed to that person you are with, without the option of marrying.

    Well, IMO.

  2. While GLBT folk fight for the right to hospital visitation this creep divorces a dying spouse. Mr. Moral Superiority.

  3. Actually, what I think has been proven pretty conclusively, and is being borne out in recent GOP polling, is that Newt Gingrich was the temporary aberration.

  4. The man on his third marriage and second religion thinks my marriage is a temporary aberration.

  5. Gingrich the hypocrite needs to come clean and simply say:

"I believe that marriage is between a man and 3 women"

  9. The typical Iowa Republican caucus goer is like 65 years old, white, protestant, high school only and has never been out of the Midwest. Iowa is actually useless for the nomination as very few "winners" go on to be nominated. They don't even become VP choices or get cabinet positions. It's a complete distraction. The best that can be said of it is that it requires candidates to meet actual voters.

  10. "temporary aberration" = until the Dominionists totally take power round up all the gays, put them in camps and exterminate them. Which is what they want to do AND think they will be able to do once they "take back America."

  11. More a 'temporary aberration' like his Catholocism.

  12. Technically, if you are Catholic and you get a divorce you aren't divorced and your next marriage is not sanctioned or approved by the Church.

He is living in apostasy and cannot take Communion, ergo the fool is not a Catholic.

  13. Oh, and while I am at it. According to Church law because marriage is a sacrament, he is in a greater state of mortal sin than two gay men having sex. Gay Catholics can still take communion like any other person who has sex outside of marriage after confession for having sex outside of marriage. When you have remarried you have committed a "mortal" sin and ergo cannot take Communion with everyone else unless you leave that wife and go back to the first.

  16. Newt... YOU are a temporary aberration! Just like your marriages (HOW many?) and your run for the presidency in 2012. SHUT UP!

  17. Newt, YOU are also, fortunately, a temporary aberration. Just get off the stage and let the real candidates have there say.

  18. Newt is confusing gay marriage for his own marriage.
