  6. Watching these videos left me speechless. What a powerful and amazing story!!!! I live in Troy Michigan which is a suburb 8 miles North of Detroit. Thank you so much for sharing these videos.

  7. The story was riveting; but since it was posted on Towleroad, I was slightly distracted waiting to see how the story related to gay issues. LOL - then I realized that there was no gay angle, that not every thing is about us.

Thank you for sharing this great story.

  8. Anyone know of a contemporaneous news story about this incident? There should be something, somewhere. If not in the newspaper, court records should exist. I live in Colorado where the nation went ballistic over 'Balloon Boy'---remember how that turned out?

  9. I live in a Detroit suburb and can confirm that this type of violence happens on a daily basis. There have been periods where multiple shootings happen on a daily basis, and while this is probably true for many cities, it seems to be expected for Detroit. People live up to the expectations placed upon them and this is why it has been so difficult for us to change the culture of violence.
The anger at being disenfranchised cannot be easily solved, the cycle of poverty cannot be easily solved but the culture of violence can.
The solution to every problem is not a gun.

  10. @Christopher - I think his scars are enough... dont you?

  11. It's true that a story like this would not necessarily make the news in Detroit. He is very lucky for the heroes at Detroit receiving hospital who bring gun shot victims back from the dead on a weekly basis.

  12. Why would anyone doubt this kids story, especially with the scars? Are there people who think 'urban' violence is exaggerated? We've had an extreme violence 'urban' crimewave in the U.S. since the late 60s-70s.

And yeah, it's mostly caused by young black males raised by moms and grandmas in subsidized housing. I know, I know...not suppose to talk about that on a 'progressive' site.

  13. The defendant showed up at court in a purple suit, top hat, cane and sunglasses. And his family cheered him on.

So pathetic, but sadly not that shocking.

  14. Ross....you ARE a warrior!!
Glad you're living your life now

  15. @Jamison

I used to live in the 313. Thank the Lord I no longer do.

Know where the old Ford plant is that the floats used to be kept in? Yes, that lovely area is where I grew up...and YES this story is not an oddity.

Every time that Chrysler 200 commercial with Eminem comes on I forget how much I hate Detroit. Then something like this comes on to remind my why I left to begin with.

However, that said... GO LIONS!!! GO TIGERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  16. And out comes DratFastard to troll the conversation again...

  17. @aladinsane,

    please shut up.

    thx

  18. @AladinSane:

Apparently "troll the conversation" means "acknowledging reality."

  19. Jim: Scars from what? X-ray of whom? And, just on further thought: After 3 days in hospital, do people still cough up tar and BBs? Really??

  20. Amazing story, good for you Ross. You already have the right focus, you'll have a great life.

  21. I'd like to see some more details about this case too. I've lived in the Detroit area for almost 20 years, and this would have definitely been picked up and sensationalized to no end by our area's finest yellow journalists. Plus, Macomb Township is not exactly a hotbed of gang activity -- if anything, it's a hotbed of über whiteness and pure suburbia. Anybody got any further details on this?

  22. It is strange when you google his name and the basics of his story, nothing pops up except this vid, and the berrics has copyright and is having it removed from all sites except theirs. I checked out the Detroit Free Press and found nothing. Of course it's possible it received no media attention. But I'd like to hear some verification from other legit sources.

    Posted by: ratbastard | Oct 7, 2011 8:57:23 PM

  23. If Detroit news reported every gunshot wound, murder, rape, beating, theft, etc. each Free Press would look like the phone book.

Sorry, not having the priv to live in the suburbs of Detroit I'm a bit bitter about what a craptacular, horrific, terrible place Detroit can be.

  24. '...Plus, Macomb Township is not exactly a hotbed of gang activity -- if anything, it's a hotbed of über whiteness...'

    ==============

LOL......you spit that out like it's a terrible thing. Is it as bad as a 'Chocolate' City?

Anyway, MANY American suburbs in the 21st century are actually quite diverse. The real non-diverse ghettos exist in a few 'Urban' neighborhoods, AKA 'communities'. Will there be 50% or more black populations everywhere? No...blacks make up 13% of the U.S. population.

    Posted by: ratbastard | Oct 8, 2011 3:13:44 PM

  25. @Ratbastard

If you lived on a "certain side" of Jefferson (we're not even talking 8 Mile yet) once upon a time if you were "white" you would feel as though you had some sort of bragging rights even if you lived say in Harper Woods right on top of 8 Mile. To live on the other side of the city meant you were part of a 10-15% minority (Hamtramck notwithstanding), not 50%.

So white kids who had a racial chip on their shoulder were happy to live in the same tiny crapbox houses over on the other side of town because then they could go to Grosse Pointe North where I'm sure all the wealthy students treated them sooooo well.

I, for one, was happier being a poor white chick in the black part of town then trying to fit in with an entirely different sort of cruelty on the other. Although I would have preferred to not have been in the Detroit Metro Area at all.

    @Kwame,

hadn't watched the video so I didn't realize we're talking Macomb. Still, nothing at all would surprise me about the Detroit Metro area.
