Zimbabwean PM Morgan Tsvangirai 'Refuses to Throw a Stone' at Gays in Response to Outrage

Zimbabwean PM Morgan Tsvangirai has caused an uproar from conservatives in his country over his recent show of support for protecting gays in the consitution.

TsvangiraiSaid Tsvangirai in a statement today clarifying his position:

“I want to put finality and closure to an issue that has been misinterpreted, the issue of the so-called gay rights. My beliefs on this issue are a matter of public record. My beliefs manifest themselves in my practice. I am a Christian associated with the Methodist church. I am a father. I am a grandfather. I am a family man. I am a Zimbabwean and I know the strong feelings of Zimbabweans about this issue. I have those strong feelings too but in the end, Zimbabweans are making their own Constitution and it is that Constitution which will bind every Zimbabwean. What I refuse to do as a loyal son of God and as a social democrat is to persecute, to judge, to condemn and to vilify people for their own opinions because judgment is a preserve of God the Almighty. The Book of Luke Chapter 6 verse 37: “Do not judge and you will not be judged, do not condemn and you will not be condemned. The Book of John Chapter 8 verse 7:  “If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone… So while I may differ with them, as a Christian and as a social democrat, I refuse to throw a stone at them."

  2. Actually, a rather enlightened view for an African politician.

  3. Wow Balis, racist much? I think this is a huge step forward both for a christian and a major politician in the conservative Zimbawbwe.

  4. That was a really good way to justify taking an extremely unpopular social position. Thank you Morgan Tsvangirai for trying to hold back the anti-gay mob.

    p.s.
    @Balis you're an asswipe

  5. I think this is great... You'll never be able to convince someone with deep-seated religious beliefs that homosexuality should be accepted. Just like you'd never convince one of us that it is a sin.

But this guy realizes that he cannot force those beliefs on others. That is fantastic! Isn't that what we want?

Or will some people never be happy until everyone celebrates gayness?

  6. "Ugly Negroe..."

Maybe to you, Balis...but he wouldn't have been turned away from that sporting house your mama worked in when you were conceived.

  7. Wow. A genuine Christian has crept into government. What are the odds?
    Anyway, it's very sweet.

  8. I agree that this is very positive. The man holds a public trust in a very conservative nation, he is a Christian whose views on homosexuality reflect what he understands to be biblical--but he has the integrity and courage to accept the fact that some of us ARE different, believe differently, and deserve respect and the protection of laws. Isn't it amazing that we don't hear the same from American would-be Presidential candidates who claim some shared values with the PM?

  10. Balis makes that same dumbass comment frequently but it's never deleted; is there no way to clean up the most vile comments on this site?

  11. The answer is no, Brian. It leads to more page views.

  12. I love this site, but its comment management system (and its layout, and the fact that pics in aggregated news posts don't lead to their associated article...) is very 2004.

please. a little design and social media savvy would go a long way. the reporting here is to valuable to have a post's comments start with "ugly negroe" with no way for the community to monitor it.

also, the double side-bar. please, just make it go away.

  14. he's pretty brave and unequivocal. Why would anyone here have a problem with what he said? I believe it was along the lines of "live and let live".

  15. They wont throw stones at them, they will throw them in jail, how nice.

  16. It was a very clever statement. He made his point and used their own religion to shame the bigots. Good job.

This guy is smarter than any of our Republican candidates now running in the top four positions.

He is of course trying to preserve his country's intake of foreign aid.
