'The Hobbit' Trailer Scurries Out of Middle Earth: VIDEO

Hobbit

The beard budget on this adaptation of JRR Tolkien's 'Lord of the Rings' prequel, 'The Hobbit: An Unexpected Adventure', had to be out of control.

MTV sums up the clip:

The trailer opens with an elderly Bilbo (Ian Holm) explaining to Frodo (Elijah Wood) that he might not have shared all there was to know about his adventures, followed by a quick cut to young Bilbo (Martin Freeman) being recruited to come on a new journey with Gandalf the Grey (Ian McKellen). It then introduces a slew of Dwarves and Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage), who begin an eerie foreshadowing chant that provides backing for quick clips of this new fellowship on their journey. After that, it shows brief glimpses of Cate Blanchett reprising her role as ethereal Galadriel and a shadowy appearance of Andy Serkis as Gollum muttering about his "precious."

Check it out, AFTER THE JUMP...

  1. A year to wait? Oh no! But I am sure it is worth waiting for.

  7. I honestly didn't like the first half of this trailer. It made it look goofy. Got better in the end though.

  8. The chant (which gives me chills - can't stop listening to it) isn't 'foreshadowing', it's the story of how Smaug attacked Erebor & drove the dwarves out. It's part of their history.

    MTV: -50 DKP!

  9. Smaug appears at the end of the book... so doubt he'll be in the first movie. You know they're splitting it into 2 movies, right?

As for goofiness, The Hobbit was a children's book ... the tone is quite different from LOTR.

  10. Got news for ya, Andreas: The Hobbit IS goofy. It's not a prequel. The LotR was a sequel. The original was a children's book, in a decidedly children's book tone. To the extent Jackson goes and makes it all serious will be the extent to which it is a giant Fail.

  11. While 'Hobbit' was a children's book, it was not a fluffy, fun-filled bit of twee.
    Spoiler alert -
the dwarves are on a very serious quest, and most of what happens to them is fairly grim. E.g., captured by 'goblins' (presumably Misty Mountain orcs), captured by giant spiders in Mirkwood, captured by feral sylvan Elves, half-starved, and so on. It's not as deadly serious as LoTR, because the world will not be taken over by hideous evil if they fail, but it's not a hobbit walking-party in the Shire.

And Tolkien tended not to write female characters unless it was unavoidable. For example, despite the representation of hobbits as being solid, smug, rural types, with big families, both Bilbo and Frodo remain bachelors their entire lives. Gandalf, as a Maia, is of course a bachelor. Elrond, Denethor and Theoden are all widowers.

At least he let Sam get married.

  12. Tolkien avoided any sexual connotations in the Hobbit and LOTR as they were for all ages and he was very conservative, but he had plenty of female characters, and even incest, in the Silmarillion, which is a sort of middle earth bible.
