Seattle Woman Weds Building, Calls It a Gay Marriage: VIDEO

(image SeattlePI)

In an event that right-wing hate groups like the AFA will likely see as a great victory for their people will start marrying buildings theory, a Seattle woman this weekend "married" a warehouse she said she fell in love with during the Occupy protests and called it a gay wedding.

WCTI reports:

Babylonia Aivaz invited the Seattle public to attend what she calls the “gay wedding” to the building [this past] Sunday. The building is an abandoned warehouse that is in the process of being demolished, according to ABC affiliate KOMO. Aivaz hopes to save the space for a community center.

“Yes, I’m in love with a 107 year old building! Yes, ITS A GAY MARRIAGE! How is that possible? Well there must obviously be a deeper story,” Aivaz wrote on her Facebook invitation to the wedding.

In December, Avaiz and 16 others held a protest at the building, circling around the property and linking arms to fight for dedicated community space, according to the report. The warehouse is slated to be demolished and turned into a mixed-use apartment building.

Added Aivaz: “If corporations can have the rights as people, so can buildings. I’m doing this to show the building how much I love it, how much I love community space and how much I love this neighborhood. And I want to stop it from gentrification.”

  2. I understand her political protest but can anyone explain why she chose to call it a 'gay marriage'? Unless she was being ironic... Most occupy people I know are supportive of LGBT persons so it would strike me as odd for her to be mixing anti-gay and anti-citizens united politics.

  3. What a bunch of BS. Yet another pseudo "occupier" using (and hurting) LGBT causes to push their agenda. That is clear. To shrug it off is foolish. And to try and merge the rights of people to marry vs. her entitled "give me a free space to live, work and play" babble is insulting.

  4. I think there's a definite possibility this is a plant. Note how it makes anti-gentrification activists, OWS protesters, and supporters of gay marriage all look bad. A nice three-for-one kill on the PR front for liberal causes/activists. Are we sure this isn't a conservative one?

  5. If she did marry the building, she's now responsible for all of its debts and financial obligations. So now the city has someone to go after for all the unpaid property tax.

(Seriously, just as a protest against gentrification, this is completely moronic. This stunt demonstrates nothing, and makes her look stupid to boot.)

  9. I don't know. This type of situation will come back and bite gays in the butt.(no pun intended). This will be something the anti-gay marriage group is going to jump on as another reason for gays not get married. Not smart.

  10. Dear bedazzled Jesus H on a rainbow colored moped, WTF is wrong with you? You really cant see that this is nothing more than a well-intentioned piece of PR driving agit performance art piece of which there is a rich tradition and on which whole academic careers have been built? Sure. It wasn't the greatest. Or even original really. But the intentions seem noble enough. Would you ever have heard of the dispute over this building otherwise?
You are being a bunch of reactionary ignorant crybabies.

  11. It looks like roughly half of the people commenting here didn't read the article or watch the video, and have no clue what this is even about.

Keep overreacting. I had a rough day today, and you idiots are giving me something to laugh at.

  12. her argument is that if we can expand the rights of corporations as 'people', then it is absurd to deny *actual* lgbt people our civil rights.

  13. Have no fear that she will be adopted by the far-right. The bulldozer development crowd is a big monied interest in the conservative universe. Preservationist types are not viewed with favor. She raises too many red flags for the right.
