Pope Benedict: Gay Marriage 'Threatens the Future of Humanity'

Pope Benedict addressed the diplomatic corps assigned to the Vatican and said that same-sex marriage threatens the future of humanity, Reuters reports:

PopeHe told diplomats from nearly 180 countries that the education of children needed proper "settings" and that "pride of place goes to the family, based on the marriage of a man and a woman."

"This is not a simple social convention, but rather the fundamental cell of every society. Consequently, policies which undermine the family threaten human dignity and the future of humanity itself," he said.

He added:

"The family unit is fundamental for the educational process and for the development both of individuals and states; hence there is a need for policies which promote the family and aid social cohesion and dialogue."

The Pope last week elevated 22 bishops to cardinals, among them New York Archbishop Timothy Dolan, an outspoken opponent of New York's marriage equality law.

  1. As for the pope/grand wizard... no comment needed. And does anyone else think that pose looks like the Emperor in Star Wars, just as he's about to zap Luke with electricity?

  2. How does increasing the number of people who can establish legal, supported families threaten society? How does affirming the value of the family unit devalue it? How does becoming a family, legally, with all of the dignity and respect accrued, if done by persons of the same sex, devalue, harm, or destroy society? How is the establishment of a same-sex partner family less effective in providing an environment for learning and teaching children to become the productive next generation? How does it hurt society?

The too-long post siting the research on gay parents that I posted on a previous thread provided ample evidence of he efficacy of same-sex parents in parenting and raising well-adjusted children. It s not at all surprising that a "man of faith" would get it so wrong when it comes to the truth. But it is still galling!

  3. Fixed his quote for accuracy: “The [HETEROSEXUAL] family unit is fundamental for the educational process and for the development both of individuals and states [ACCORDING TO OUR RELIGIOUS BELIEFS]; hence there is a need for policies which promote the [HETEROSEXUAL] family and aid social cohesion and dialogue [IN ORDER TO PROMOTE OUR RELIGIOUS BELIEFS AND PUNISH THOSE THAT DISAGREE WITH OUR EDICTS]

  7. The catholic cult and others are the real threat to humanity. How dare he make moral pronouncements when he and his cult have been harboring pedophiles not just for the past decades for almost two millenia. It still continues to this day and will never be stamped out entirely. Same-sex marriage is a new phenomenon, how can this moron explain why the family unit has been breaking down for decades, all down to heterosexuals? We had and have nothing to do with it whatosever. I want him to provide the facts and documentary evidence to back up his outrageous statement. He's just like the GOP, pandering to fear-mongering. No wonder they love him. He's evil incarnate.

  8. I will never accept the Catholic Church as an institution of not only moral integry but moral superiority.
Decades of child abuse, destruction of families, denying women the right over there own bodies, demonizing effective ways to protect whole countries from AIDS, and harboring Nazis and helpingt them escape ("rat line").

And to think this man is from my country just makes me sick.

  15. Others have hit all the high points: (1) if family is so important, priests should be required to marry; (2) the RCC should clean up its own problems rather than trying to solve non-problems; (3) the question isn't about families or marriage, it's about the RCC retaining power and credibility.

    I've nothing to add.

  16. Rick? Why are you taking time out to comment here? Isn't your presidential campaign keeping you busy enough? Oh. You're not *that* Rick. I am surprised, I didn't think there could be two people sharing the same name who were such flaming misogynistic, homophobic douchenozzles to such a strong degree. Unholy synchronicity, Batman!

  17. Gays aren't unnatural. We exercise our biological impulses. Celibacy is unnatural; the policies of the Catholic Church are unnatural and undermine human dignity and the future of humanity.

  18. The Popes and the Catholic Church have been f*cking (often literally) with humanity for more than 1000 years. The Vatican should be on trail for crimes against humanity ASAP.

  20. @BOBN You are joking, right? The discrimination lawsuits (which are often groundless), the sexual harrassment lawsuits, the costs associated with maternity leave, the costs associated with training people who often leave the workforce permanently in their 30's......and, in addition to that, the damage done to morale and efficient functioning by the addition of the rumor-mongering, back-stabbing, clique-joining, petty emotionalism mentality7 that women introduce into a workplace.....(and which, incidentally, disproportionately effects the few gay men in the corporate world).

Tell me again, what has been gained by having them there?

Even if you concede some gains in talent, that is more than cancelled out by the combination of the factors I just listed together with the negative impacts on children's lives that these women's abandonment of them has entailed....which will also impact competitiveness and productivity in a negative way, long term.

And the last time I looked, America was losing its competitiveness rather rapidly and the countries that are surpassing it are generally patriarchal at both the societal and corporate levels, with traditional nuclear families still intact.

Some day you people will be forced to the realization that neither feminists nor women in general are friends of gay men nor will they ever be.....just as you will be forced to a lot of other realizations, whether you like it or not.

  21. I'm hearing a man who lives in a bubble, the same sort of out-of-touch, divorced from reality sort of nonsense we're getting from NOM, Rick Santorum, and a few others.

The pope is quite obviously living in a fantasy world. He should take something for that.

  24. There is something fundamentally illogical to claim that the family is the basis of society, and then deny Gay people the right to family. Obviously, since they call him pope, what he thinks is given as Truth to those who follow unquestioningly. As a Tibetan teacher once said, "Blind faith is simply blind." To be meaningful, it needs to be based on what is, not what one thinks ought to be.

  25. With seven billion people in the world and climbing, this is going to take a while, but then, gay sex is very compelling, as we all know.
