Romney Worried He'll Lose to Obama if People See His Tax Returns: VIDEO

M_romney

Mitt Romney was booed at last night's debate after refusing to commit to the release of his tax returns. He was asked about it on FOX News this morning, and repeated his statement that he wouldn't release them until April 15.

Said Romney:

“I want to beat Barack Obama. I don’t want to give the Democrats a nice little present of having multiple releases.”

Watch both clips, AFTER THE JUMP...

In related news, ABC News reports on newly discovered contributions to the Mormon Church in the millions of dollars, through stock transfers:

His family charity, called the Tyler Foundation, has given more than $4 million to the church in the past five years, including $1.8 million in 2008 and $600,000 in 2009. But because Romney, whose fortune has been estimated at $250 million, has never released his personal tax returns, the full extent of his giving has never been public.

Newly uncovered stock contributions made during Romney's Bain days suggest there is another dimension to Romney's support for the church -- one that could involve millions more than has been previously disclosed.

As part of just one Bain transaction in 2008, involving its investment in Burger King Holdings, filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission reveal that an unnamed Bain partner donated 65,326 shares of Burger King stock to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, holdings then worth nearly $1.9 million. And there were numerous others, giving the church a stake in other Bain properties, such as Domino's Pizza, the electronics manufacturer DDi, the phosphates company Innophos Holdings, and Marquee Holdings, the parent to AMC Theaters.

What else happened in 2008? Proposition 8.

And here's the debate clip:

  1. This run for the Presidency is the fulfillment of the Book of Mormon dictate of taking over the country from all angles. If that doesn't scare anyone I don't know what else could!

  2. He is terrible talking with people... almost like he's offended they'd speak with him, or when out in public, want to shake his hand.

  3. Mickey, you need a reality check. The same paranoid bull$hit was said when JFK became president. "Oh no, the Vatican will control Washington!" Clearly, that did not happen.

With regard to the Romney/tax return issue, just release them already! I know our economy sucks and a lot of people are hard off, but I really don't see the shame in being successful and being wealthy. There's nothing wrong with that. Most people, myself included, are just jealous.

  4. @LJames: I suggest that you read more about the cult that is Mormonism and perhaps pursue aggressive work ruining people's lives to make money and restrain equality if your jealousy is haunting you. Being wealthy isn't a crime, but how you make money obviously can be unethical. Coverups have reasons.

  5. @PaulR: I don't disagree that there are some batshit crazy aspects of Mormonism. I just don't think it will affect how Romney governs. At all. For those of you saying we should be "scared" are being a bit hysterical and dramatic.

  6. to LJames..... his proposed tax plans would result in him paying even LESS taxs than he does now....at the same time he calls for spending cuts for SS, Medicaid and anything else that doesnt personaly effect him.

  7. With the growing collapse and/or disrepute of all Republican candidates - an amazing historical development - it is now clear that Obama will win the next election, that he is in fact destined to. He will set the tone for the near future, as perhaps he has already done, and it will be good. No matter his shortcomings, it will be good.

  8. he's worth 200 million and opposes the so-called "death tax" (which applies only to the wealthiest americans) because it would mean that when he passes he only gets to give his Mormon Brood 110 million dollars.

which means those poor little Mormons only tens of millions each. and that's just not enough, as every hard working American knows.

    right?

    *barf*

  9. "to LJames..... his proposed tax plans would result in him paying even LESS taxs than he does now."

Um, yeah. I think that's a good thing. I think ALL people who EARN money should pay less taxes than they do now. There's so much waste in government, it's mind boggling. I'm sick of subsidizing useless bureaucracy and lazy people.

  10. This is ridiculous. Mormonism is not a cult. Just check out mormon.org if you have any doubts. As for Romney's taxes, don't most successful businessmen know how to keep their tax rate low? He knows that America will not last long with so much debt. Just check his record if you doubt his ability to take a mess of an organization's finances and put them in order.

    Posted by: Johnathon | Jan 20, 2012 1:13:23 PM

  11. Yes, LJames, you are correct there is waste in government and 99% of it is in the budget for the Military.

    Posted by: TC | Jan 20, 2012 1:20:14 PM

  12. actually, Mormonism is the definition of a cult - there are punishments (both spiritual/eternal and mortal) for not subscribing to their ideology and belief system, tithing income is a part of the rules.

if you belong to a religion that promotes the idea that there will be a form of punishment in this life and the next for not towing the line, then CONGRATS - you're a member of a cult.

  13. LJ

it isn't his wealth it is that he stores a large chunk off it outside the US in the cayman islands and only pays somewhere near 15% tax on his income 9one suspects it is the lower end under 15%)

Mickey what you might be refering to is "The White Horse Prophecy" supposedly prophesised before joseph smith died

it is non-canonical and dismissed by early mormon presidents/ prophets as BS and joseph smith never uttered such nonsense...........but the masses cling to it. What it states is that one day the constitution will hang by a thread as thin as silk and a mormon will ride in on a white horse to save the USA while establishing mormonism as the religion of the US and only mormons in power with mormon law the law of the land and a return to polygamy

  14. there's a reason Mormons breed like primitive baby-factories and hoard wealth.

Posted by: Little Kiwi | Jan 20, 2012 1:49:16 PM

  15. I think what he was actually saying is that if he releases his tax returns now, it will make it harder for him to become the Republican nominee. It's like his comment to his lawn service about hiring undocumented workers: "For Pete's sake, you can't do that! I'm running for President." Very inadvertently revealing.

  16. Perhaps we could finally see Obama's academic records? Or is he not subject to the same scrutiny as the Republican candidates?

(I know, stupid question. Of course Obama is exempt from scrutiny.)

  17. "LJ
it isn't his wealth it is that he stores a large chunk off it outside the US in the cayman islands"

And? That's not illegal. Good for him. He keeps more of his money (instead of contributing more towards bloated military budgets, foodstamps, crazy unionized pensions for bureaucrats, etc.)

    Posted by: LJames | Jan 20, 2012 2:31:19 PM

  18. LJ

yes legal but unethical even to many repubs. also considered unethical (though legal) by the majority due to not investing in US as in US companies thus a way to promote US goods, services, and jobs

    MAX

8 yrs of 10 yrs of tax returns released by Obama

    birth certificate released by Obama

so the birthers have moved on to the schoolers? That is only partly up to him since the other part of a release is based on the schools policies

    ---------

Mitt's own father released 12 yrs of tax returns

Posted by: say what | Jan 20, 2012 3:14:51 PM

  19. 8 yrs of 10 years meant in 2008 he released 8 years and now is up to 10 years of tax returns released

  23. "The same paranoid bull$hit was said when JFK became president."

Uh... JFK directly addressed that "bull$hit" with a speech on the separation of church and state that, if given in front of GOP audience these days, would result in the disembowelment of the speaker.

    In Jesus' name, of course.

  24. You want to beat Obama? What about recovering the nation? Putting in a good president and ousting a bad one?

It's statements like those that justify why you ultimately won't win. You make Obama look like a hero to the middle class; you know, 80% of the voters? Anti-Obama rhetoric will only get you so far, and that's not very far at all.

    Posted by: Matt | Jan 20, 2012 7:08:23 PM

  25. He fears releasing his tax returns because he wants to beat Obama???

Sorry Mitt, but you already lost!

Mitt Romney is a liar and a phony that can't even connect with regular folks without being condescending. Mitt was born with a silver spoon in his mouth and inherited most of his father's wealth. He has built on that fortune by laying off thousands of workers.

He pays less than 15 percent taxes and hides his earning in the Cayman Islands while funneling loads of it to the Mormon church who in turn uses it to fund their anti-gay campaigns.

Mitt Romney is hiding his tax returns because the more Americans find out about him the more he will be disliked.
