Former GOP Sen. Alan Simpson Tears into 'Homophobic' Santorum: VIDEO

Simpson

Former Senator Alan Simpson (R-WY) tore into Rick Santorum, calling him "rigid and...homophobic" on Face to Face with Bob Schieffer, adding that he was alarmed at how Republicans are grabbing on to social issues:

"I am convinced that if you get into these social issues and just stay in there about abortion and homosexuality and even mental health they bring up, somehow they're going to take us all to Alaska and float us out in the Bering Sea or something."

Said Simpson of Santorum:

"He said, 'I want a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage,' and they said, 'Well, what about the people who are already married?' And he said, 'Well, they would be nullified.' I mean what is, what's human, what's kind about that? We're all human beings, we all know or love somebody who's gay or lesbian so what the hell is that about? To me it's startling and borders on disgust."

Watch, AFTER THE JUMP...

Simpson made similar remarks last April, in an interview with Chris Matthews:

"We have homophobes on our party. That’s disgusting to me. We’re all human beings. We’re all God’s children. Now if they’re going to get off on that stuff—Santorum has said some cruel things—cruel, cruel things—about homosexuals. Ask him about it; see if he attributes the cruelness of his remarks years ago. Foul."

  1. Alan Simpson's been an alright dude since he left the Republican Senate caucus.

  2. Wow, why can't other Republican's evolve on these issues?

  3. Alan Simpson is someone who was affected by the attack on Matthew Shepard. His record on gay rights before the attack and afterwards are like night and day.

  4. As he says, it's all about knowing and/or loving someone who's gay. That's why it's so important for people to come out of the closet. Any decent person wouldn't be against gay marriage if they were friends or related to an openly gay person.

  5. He makes an excellent point when bringing up Eisenhower. When was the last time we had a moderate Republican? We've had a march right. Hell, even Nixon was better than this crop.

  6. Alan Simpson is precisely the sort of Republican that the Fundies have driven out of the party -- SANE.

I'm telling you the Republicans are going to rue the day they allowed the paty to drag itself to the ultra-right.

  7. When LBJ signed the civil rights act, rethugs sold their souls to hate groups and theyve been in a downward spiral to hell ever since. Ever ask yourself why our rights are put up to a majority vote? Its because the southern strategists realized thats the way to suppress a minority. After they lost through the legislative process in the 60's, these bigots said "never again". Its the loophole you can drive a truck through and they use it every chance they get.
Also its much easier to stoke hate to get a vote than to sit down and find answers to the real problems of this country.

  8. My father used to work for him. I recall meeting him when young and being impressed by his height. Since then I've been impressed by his intellect, which his fellow Repubs usually ignore when they appoint him to panels. Great guy.

  9. David is right. The old guard, responsible republicans are long gone.

  10. Simpson is helpful, but he rarely speaks up. Like many GOP pols, his focus seems to be on getting more gay GOP members (and their $$$$) than on pushing equality.

Still, nice to watch someone in that party knock Santorum.

  11. The worst to do now would be to get complacent. Just look how far Mr. Satin (Santorum) has come in just a week!

  12. It sure is easy for these Republicans to turn pro-gay when they leave office.

  13. He's a Wyoming Republican, which means that he's basically a Libertarian. He's never done anything antigay in his career, as far as I know. He's taught at Harvard and is extremely kind, bright, and engaging. Not all Republicans are depictions of evil. Just most.

I could tell you a lot more about him but I'd be wasting my time. I will say that it would not surprise me for one second were he gay.

  15. I'm not sure where you are coming from Jersey
"It sure is easy for these Republicans to turn pro-gay when they leave office"
Would you rather they NEVER evolved? Read what Karin1492 has to say about how Simpson was affected by Matthew Shepard's death, consider the fact that is has only been relatively recent that many people both private and public are coming out to the world, read Mike M's comment on this. Try looking at this from a glass half full point of view rather than a glass half empty.

  16. Simpson sounds wonderful, truly, but he's "alarmed at how Republicans are grabbing hold of social issues"?? What's so alarming, or surprising here? They do it EVERY election cycle, and have since 2000.

  17. I think he was a Democrat until he met Ronald Reagan and then switched parties, largely over foreign policy issues. He was influenced later by some of his gay staffers who convinced him of the importance of fairness in civil rights issues and by the opinions of Barry Goldwater, who "evolved" a lot in his later years.

  18. You are the best website for gay men. I can't start my day without reading your blog first. I am never disappointed you do a incredibly great job. I can't believe I am agreeing with a Repub But Simpson is right. The new field of GOP's are all bigots and racest and must be stopped. Obama needs to win the next election' I know he will but he needs both houses.

  19. I would love for someone to explain how he was "affected" by Matthew Shepard's death unless it was an emotional issue. The man left office in 1997. Matthew was killed in 1998. Cripes.

  20. Sad how all of the older more moderate Republicans have been driven out of the party and replaced with Tea Party ignorance, religious panderers & corporate shills.

  21. I USED TO BE AN AVID VIEWER OF C-SPAN. AT THAT TIME, I WAS A GREAT FAN OF FORMER SENATOR ALAN SIMPSON [I STILL AM; HE IS A GREAT HUMAN BEING]. HOWEVER, MANY PEOPLE IN THIS COUNTRY AGREE WITH SENATOR RICK SANTORUM'S VIEWS. LEGALIZATION OF GAY MARRIAGE WOULD PLACE AN UNFAIR BURDEN ON TAXPAYERS [HEALTH-CARE SUBSIDIES, ETC.] - MOST OF WHOM CONSIDER HOMOSEXUALITY TO BE WRONG.
    THANKS FOR YOUR TIME.

  22. MR. DUFFORD (22 FEBRUARY),
IT IS NOT FAIR TO REFER TO SENATOR SANTORUM AS, "MR. SATAN." [BY THE WAY, MR. DUFFORD, CALLING HIM "MR. SATIN" WOULD BE CALLING HIM A FABRIC]. SENATOR SANTORUM IS THE PARTY'S BEST HOPE FOR WINNING THE ELECTION. AFTER BECOMING PRESIDENT SANTORUM, WON'T YOU FEEL BAD ABOUT CALLING HIM [IN YOUR SPELLING] A PIECE OF FABRIC?
    THANKS FOR YOUR TIME.

  23. SO, TOWLEROAD "gay" DEMOCRATS IT SEEMS YOU MAY GET YOUR WISH. "Gay" MARRIAGE - IF PASSED - WILL DESTROY THE COUNTRY (I GUARANTEE). NAACP's "BLIND" SUPPORT OF THIS BIRACIAL PRESIDENT IS TEARING THE NEGRO COMMUNITY IN "TWO." THIS "gay-rights" AGENDA HAS PUT RELIGION "ON TRIAL" - THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA BOMB SCARE (AIMED AT Y-O-U-R BELOVED ORGANIZATIONS) IS PROOF OF FUTURE FALLOUT. ARE YOU HAPPY NOW?
