What a fantastic short film.Really shows a courageous openly gay man. If he can do this , we can certainly find the courage to confront the political thugs and religious bigots in our own country. Share this and the eyes of the world can help keep him a bit safer.

Godspeed, Mr.Kuria. I pray that the intolerance that has poisoned Africa will whither away in the face of your astounding courage. Good luck, sir!

If you want to see what bravery and courage actually look like, look into the face of David Kuria.

This is an astonishing story, person, therefore film. David’s sweet nature and calm manner give him an air of unreality, either perhaps of delusion in the face of the realities he has to face, or of the kind of inspired inner direction and leadership which history gives us in the form of people, often lowly born, for a high calling. He may become either anoher beloved victim or a great leader, a Kato or a Mandela.

And thank you for posting this, another amazing story put before me by Towleroad, the site not only for information and entertainment, but for just plain high drama as well. Woof.

Everyone should also be reminded that tonight you can watch the new drama “8” for free on You Tube. 7:30.

Wow. What an inspiration… people like this make me want to be a better person. Best wishes to Mr. Kuria!

    i think i’m in love.

this needs to be a wake-up-call to all gay western adults. look at what this brave young man is doing. look at where he’s doing it. look how necessary and vital it is, and how selfless and empowered this man is.

vanguards like David Kuria should be reminding us all of the Work we need to be continuing with here in North America.

after all, if this young man can Come Out and fight for LGBT Equality in KENYA, what excuse can we have over here for not doing the same in North America?

*tips his hat to a true hero*

I had never seen the video for the “most heinous explosions of atavistic tribal barbarity” link that comes with this paragraph … A clip that will scar your mind definitely…

On the other hand: this man is really brave being an activist in Kenya…I hope people don’t hurt him there.

What an excellent short film. We should all aspire to be as brave and selfless as David is.

As a Kenyan it makes me proud to see people like David Kuria. Perhaps one day i can have even a shadow of the levels of courage that he is displaying here.
I’m in comfortable America so i truly appreciate people like Kuria who can actually make the argument that being out is the most effective way of activism and advocacy. The best thing is that he is making this argument with HIS LIFE and by LIVING and not just talking about the truth. This is true personhood(not manhood) but personhood at its best. It moves me greatly.

David will probably not win,(some of the theocrats in Kenya make Santorum seem positively Augustinian in comparison) but in losing, his fellow gay and fellow poor person has won.

Long live David. David Kato rest in peace. Your life was not in vain.

He’s brave in a way most of us could never even dream of being AND he’s adorable. God, I hope he stays safe and nothing happens to him.

  12. IAN F says

I really hope we wont be reading a tragic story about this brave man in the future. He has an aura of serenity that comes with knowing who you are and being true to that even with the full knowledge of what it may cost him. May he live a long life and change hearts and minds along the way.

Near the end of the video, a comparison came to mind.

Newt Gingrich, bloviating in transparently manufactured rage, because a journo dares to confront him with the contrast between his public positions and his private desire for an open marriage,

David Kuria, brave and calm as he describes a poster that explicitly calls for his own murder, seeming more upset over their use of the Bible to justify it than over the fact that they want to kill him.

Aha. So that’s what integrity looks like.
