Malaysia to Ban All LGBT Characters from Television Because They're 'Against Norm of a Religious Society'

Malaysia has issued a directive to state-owned TV stations ordering them to ban and remove LGBT characters, and says it will expand the order to privately owned stations, The Star reports:

DcruzThe Information Department has banned shows featuring gay characters, Deputy Information, Communications and Culture Minister Datuk Maglin Dennis D'Cruz confirmed. He said the ban was effective immediately but would only start with state-owned TV and radio stations.

"If it means cancelling some of the shows, so be it," he told The Star Friday, adding that the decision was to curb the "influence" of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community.

He also said the decision will be expanded to cover privately-owned stations as well as satellite TV providers.

As for foreign productions, he said the Censorship Board will remove episodes from running TV shows and bar movies with gay characters from being screened locally.

The directive appeared on the Information Department Facebook page yesterday:

"Effective immediately, radio and TV stations are asked to stop screening shows which feature gay, effeminate men as well as characters that go against the norm of a religious society because this encourages and promotes LGBT now."

  1. @Urmensch You don't have to apologize for the length of your comments--I appreciate the thought that went into it.

Here is the problem, though. You trivialize the natural bases of human behavior and try to stress the cultural aspects as being somehow "superior".

But, in reality, whenever our species has departed too far from nature, we have paid a price for it.

And I think that is what is happening in the West today with the adoption of the kind of feminist outlook that you are representing. It all sounds so "nice"--that women should be "equal" to men in every respect.....and that all differences between men and women and their roles are just cultural artifice.

But look at what is happening to Western society as a result of this acceptance of "equality". Birth rates have plummeted below replacement levels across western Europe; family structures have fallen apart--with disastrous consequences for children; educational levels have declined precipitously--in part because of the lack of engagement of parents (i.e. mothers) in their children's education; boys have become dysfunctional due to being deprived of fathers

It is a disaster in the making and it is due to the intellectual arrogance that has made Western man believe that he can contradict nature with culture and not pay a steep price for it

Here is the thing. Masculinity is natural. Homosexuality, like heterosexuality (and bisexuality) is natural. They are built in to human nature in a way that cultural notions like "equality" are not. And in a way that effeminate behavior in men is not.

That does not make us "animals" (although we are animals)--it just makes us human.

And nature will always win out over culture, in one way or another, if you wait long enough.

You are right about one thing, though--it is true that I cannot prove my theory that if you remove all sexual taboos from society, we will end up with some sort of utopia. We will not know until it has actually been done. But I see it as the only way that those of us who are "gay" can ever hope to find full acceptance and respect in society.

  2. @Rick, I would disagree about masculinity being natural, whatever that means. Male and female exist as genders, but it is a fact of nature that some people don't neatly fit, as the various forms of intersexed people show. Masculinity and femininity are the culturally conditioned expressions of maleness and femaleness, and there is variation from culture to culture.
My best friend is very heterosexual and a real ladies man but is much more feminine than I am. People often remark that if they didn't know otherwise they would assume he is the gay one. It doesn't bother him, and in fact women love it about him.
Also, I really don't see it as being a problem that the birth rate has fallen in Western Europe. I'd like to see the same pattern worldwide.
I also don't have a problem with women not being financially dependent upon men. It just means heterosexual men will have to demonstrate their worth in new ways if they are to appeal to women.

I have no idea what you mean about our species departing too far from nature. We have been doing that since we came down out of the trees and started lighting fires and creating technology. Nature is not an intelligence that punishes hubris or 'intends' or has fated us to be a certain way.
These would be the areas I fundamentally disagree with you most.

  3. Oh.. The hypocrisy of this government. For decades they have use religion to divide and concur it's citizen. Now it's loosing it's grip on that front, they use this to target the last minority group just like the American extreme right wings. This government in the name of religion had and continue to betray it's own culture, committing cultural genocide on it's own people for decades. Let's hope in the next election, once and for all these corrupted assholes get buried.
