North Carolina Pastor Sean Harris Urges Parents to 'Punch' Their 'Girlish' Sons, Crack Their Limp Wrists: AUDIO

Jeremy Hooper at Good as You has posted some extremely disturbing audio identified as Sean Harris, the Senior Pastor of Berean Baptist Church in Fayetteville, NC, giving his congregation a "special dispensation" to beat their children if they think they might be falling outside of gender norms.

Seean_harrisHarris also urged his congregation to vote for North Carolina's Amendment One in an hourlong sermon posted on Sunday.

Says Harris at the beginning of his horrifying rant (thanks to Jeremy for the transcript):

"So your little son starts to act a little girlish when he is four years old and instead of squashing that like a cockroach and saying, 'Man up, son, get that dress off you and get outside and dig a ditch, because that is what boys do,' you get out the camera and you start taking pictures of Johnny acting like a female and then you upload it to YouTube and everybody laughs about it and the next thing you know, this dude, this kid is acting out childhood fantasies that should have been squashed."

He adds:

"Can I make it any clearer? Dads, the second you see your son dropping the limp wrist, you walk over there and crack that wrist. Man up. Give him a good punch. Ok? You are not going to act like that. You were made by God to be a male and you are going to be a male."

Harris has advice for parents who think their daughters might be acting too butch:

"And when your daughter starts acting to Butch you reign her in. And you say, 'Oh, no, sweetheart. You can play sports. Play them to the glory of God. But sometimes you are going to act like a girl and walk like a girl and talk like a girl and smell like a girl and that means you are going to be beautiful. You are going to be attractive. You are going to dress yourself up.'"

Adds Harris: “Can I take charge like that as a parent? Yeah, you can. You are authorized. I just gave you a special dispensation this morning to do that."

  3. Aaack! The Berean Baptist Church also runs a school (Berean Baptist Academy, Home of the Bulldogs, teaching elementary and high school students in a "distinctively conservative atmosphere") and has an active "Adoption Ministry".

  5. Well I just called and "Jon" (a woman) answered and tried to say that the "pastor" was not advocating abusing children. I asked her whether or not she heard the sermon and she tried to argue with me that it was not about hatred. Okay, well then I guess I'm not a Christian because I don't approve of his vile hate speech. Please - everyone who reads this blog call the number and speak your mind! Thank you!

  6. I think you guys have misjudged this church. Description of their upcoming "Ladies Retreat": "This is our annual Ladies' Retreat at Camp Anchorage. A wonderful time of bible study, water sports and fellowship."

In all seriousness though, this story is nauseating.

  7. If Christians don't wish for their faith to become the standard bearer of a modern Nazi fascism, then its more enlightened believers had best stand-up and retake the faith for truth, love and honesty, rather than leave it to the arseholes who preach lies, hate and deception.

  12. As angry as I am about the pastor's comments, all I have to say is: "Pastor, be mindful of what you say or how you treat people."

  13. Gay children have been beaten to death because of advice like Harris'.

I thought the same thing, but what's the f.cking point? The ones who don't like us just don't like us. But what can I do about them? Crack their racist wrists?

  16. Doesn't Sean Harris know what is obvious to most of us. He is actually saying: Daddy why didn't you do something to rid me of my homosexual leanings. Why didn't you teach me to throw a baseball like a "real" guy?

  17. From the website of this extremist church. Weirdest set of Pastor Rules ever, esp. Number 2.:
    1. A pastor must fear God and be accountable to Him. When a congregation feels a pastor no longer fears God, he should be voted out of his office.
    2. A pastor must be accountable to his wife if he is married. If a pastor is keeping secrets (other than a surprise birthday party) from his wife, that should be a serious warning sign to the church. No one knows a pastor better than his wife, and she has a responsibility before God and the church to aid her husband in becoming more like Christ day by day in love and respect for him.

  20. "As Dan Savage once aptly put it: if a man's a homophobe, he's probably also an unapologetic sexist as well."
