CNN's Ashleigh Banfield: I Didn't Mean to Call Homosexuality a 'Voluntary Lifestyle Choice': VIDEO

A_banfield

CNN's Ashleigh Banfield attempted to clarify remarks that she made yesterday following a segment about Kansas Pastor Curtis Knapp, who believes the government should kill gay people, Mediaite reports.

In her remarks, Banfield called homosexuality a "voluntary lifestyle choice", but on her CNN newscast today, she said that wasn't what she meant at all.

Said Banfield:

I made some comments yesterday that ended up getting a lot of traction out there, not only on Twitter but elsewhere. And I want to be very, very clear about what my comments were about. I probably misspoke and mangled words, but I want to be very clear.

When I said that incest and pedophilia involve people who don’t have a choice — victims who don’t have a choice — and then said a gay relationship, you do have a choice, they are not crimes. Gay people involved in relationships are not committing any crimes at all. However, those who perpetrate incest and perpetrate pedophilia are committing crimes. I don’t know that my comments were taken in that light and I certainly hope they were, but in no way did I ever want to suggest that being gay is a choice. It is not. And I probably used the word “lifestyle choice” — not what I meant to say at all. Being gay is not a choice; being in a voluntary gay relationship is a choice. It is not a crime. So I hope that at least clears up any of the comments I made after that story of the pastor. And in no way do I agree with or stand by any of the comments that that pastor made either.

  1. Actually, incest (when it isn't pedophilia) is more of a choice than homosexuality is.

As who cares if homosexuality is a crime? It wasn't wrong when it was a crime. The law was wrong.

She's in a hole. She should stop digging.

I can tell without you mentioning that you are a fan of kiwi. You have imitated his style splendidly. You start with an ad hominem. You use caps lock to yell at people. You view everything with an eye to saying hateful/disrepsectful things. Your interpretation of this is extreme. It relys on you taking the worst possible interpretation of her motives. You don't question her actions, you attack her motives as if you had a god's eye view inside her head. You return to invective several times, you tell gay people to shut the F*ck up - why would you personally attack someone you thought was gay if you were gay yourself? Haven't we all received enough abuse from straight people to satisfy you, you have to spread your misery? You don't produce any arguments yourself, you just question motives and insult. You attack gay people as if you were a straight troll.
Oh, and you really get through to people talking to them the way that you do. And you impress fence-sitters with your ability to call your opponents names, yell at them, order them about, and generally disrespect anyone who disagrees with you all at the same time. People like to see you behaving this way.

  3. I only know about her show from the scathing take-downs on the Daily Show. If Jon Stewart provides any indication, she puts her foot in her mouth almost constantly.

From the context of her original words, it was pretty clear that she was thinking about "consent" when she said "choice", which are related but very different words. If you swap choice and lifestyle choice for consent and consenting adults then not only are her words inoffensive but they're pretty dead on.

  4. I totally get what she was trying to say. What she should have said is that gay relationships are consentual unlike pedophelia or incest where one of the parties is not consenting and is therefore a victim. As far as Im concerned this is not an issue.

  5. She is a liar. The words "voluntary lifestyle choice" don't just slip out of your mouth by mistake. A sentence like that takes some thought. She KNEW what she said but now she doesn't have the guts to face the backlash.

She is another snake who is not to be trusted.

Don't we have enough hateful, dishonest TV "news" people without CNN introducing more ?
