General Motors Lets its Pride Flag Fly in Indiana, Gets Noticed: VIDEO

Prideflag

Raising a rainbow flag is a much different act in Fort Wayne, Indiana than it is in San Francisco.

The General Motors plant there is hoisting the Pride flag for one week in honor of its LGBT employees and is getting noticed by a lot of people.

Watch WANE's report with supportive interviews, AFTER THE JUMP...

You can see the Facebook responses to WANE's report about the flag below.

GM's statement about the flag:

GM had this to say about putting up the Gay Pride flag "Recently, Fort Wayne Assembly plant leadership decided to permanently move a POW flag from a pole in front of its administration building to the facility's primary flag and truck display along Interstate 69. This gave the plant an opportunity to fly other flags, which include the Indiana state flag, the UAW flag, and any of the flags representing GM's official Employee Resource Groups. Currently the GM PLUS rainbow flag is flying for one week in support of Pride month. It's our hope that ongoing support of our employees will foster constructive dialogue on the importance of diversity at GM."

The Prisoners of War and Missing in Action flag is flying in a more prominent location in front of GM by I-69.

  7. I am the proud owner of a GM vehicle...the last few have been from GM, and I have always been happy with their quality. Today, I am more proud than ever...thanks, GM. I appreciate it, and will remember it when I purchase another vehicle from GM.

  9. This is good for Obama too. And they owe him, for saving their jobs.

Now I will consider buying GM again after a long time of not even looking at their cars.

There is a clearer line in this next election than ever before regarding support for the gay minority. Let's hope that bigotry and hate become a very small minority, no longer able to influence the Republican political strategy.

  10. I, too, will consider buying a GM car. I was wondering about a Chevy Volt - sure as hell wish they had an SUV, even if it could only go 30 miles- now I will actually test drive one. Lexus salesmen are a pain when they ask what my wife wants and I tell them I have a husband. They clearly want to make the sale, and after I signed the papers they showed their discomfort much more visibly. Would love to see HRC rate them and make them snap to in order to make a sale. I will be a silent shopper for you, HRC, and see if we can take this to the next level. But I digress. Many thanks, GM!

  11. As a guy who grew up near Fort Wayne, I hope you all know how utterly revolutionary this is, and how wonderful to see...

My husband and I drive an old Cavalier, and it's getting time to replace it...!

  12. what would be the reaction if they were to take down the POW-MIA flag? the outrage would be monumental!

i have long believed the POW-MIA flags should have disappeared years ago. they glorify an illegal war and at some point people have to let the dead be in peace instead of invoking a sentiment that has long divided our country. yeah, i was diehard anti-Vietnam.

though identified as an LGBTQ flag it actually is a diversity symbol including ALL people - gay, straight, African-American, white, transgender, Latino, etc. etc. etc. it's time people grew up!

  13. My partner is from Ft. Wayne and had to get out of there because is so repressive. I don't want to be mean but can't these newspeople find someone else to interview about this story. They always seem to find the more interesting in our community.

  14. I lived in Fort Wayne for 6 years before moving to Atlanta. This IS really a bold statement for that high volume of right wing population. A good friend that still lives there had a pride flag hanging in front of his house and it got torn down and burned. He reported the hate crime but nothing was done other than a report. That being said, this flying high in Fort Wayne is HUGE. We are making progress!

  15. The difference between the rainbow flag and the "rebel" flag, is that the latter is anti-American.
