Obama to Halt Deportations of DREAM Act-Eligible Immigrants

President Obama is to announce a new policy granting immunity to young immigrants eligible for the DREAM Act, the AP reports:

ObamaThe policy change, described to The Associated Press by two senior administration officials, will affect as many as 800,000 immigrants who have lived in fear of deportation. It also bypasses Congress and partially achieves the goals of the so-called DREAM Act, a long-sought but never enacted plan to establish a path toward citizenship for young people who came to the United States illegally but who have attended college or served in the military.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano was to announce the new policy Friday, one week before President Barack Obama plans to address the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials' annual conference in Orlando, Fla. Republican presidential challenger Mitt Romney is scheduled to speak to the group on Thursday.

Obama planned to discuss the new policy Friday afternoon from the White House Rose Garden.

  1. Rick is wrong a very basic point. I personally know several kids just out of high school who are in this situation and speak nothing but English. One is in very real fear of being deported to Tijuana and dumped off a bus in a country he left at the age of six months. What the hell will happen to him there?

  2. The Guardian has an article where Obama said last year that the President cannot halt deportations by executive order, that it needs to go through Congress. Interesting. http://m.guardian.co.uk/world/2012/jun/15/barack-obama-end-deportation-undocumented-migrants?cat=world&type=article

  3. What about the people who meet all these qualifications but they are now over 30??? UGGGGGGHHHHHHHH

  4. Who said this:

“America is a nation of laws, which means I, as the President, am obligated to enforce the law. I don’t have a choice about that. That’s part of my job,” he said. “There are enough laws on the books by Congress that are very clear in terms of how we have to enforce our immigration system that for me to simply, through executive order, ignore those congressional mandates would not conform with my appropriate role as President.”

    (It wasn't a Republican)

  5. Republicans would deport their own grandparents, of which a sizeable sum were illegal immigrants.

  6. @RICK
Stop lying. The states that have passed draconian anti-immigration laws like Georgia have their crops rotting in the fields. Not even ex-cons want those jobs. Just do a Google search and stop spreading lies, or better yet provide facts to back up your xenophobic rants.

Also, people who don't have documents are undocumented. Not illegal, for there is no such thing as an illegal human being. But I get why you use such rhetoric; it dehumanizes those you don't like. And we know what happens when we dehumanize others, don't we?

Along the same lines, not all immigrants come from Mexico, but I see your animosity is towards Mexicans. Just so you know, in the 90's I was working with undocumented Canadians who were making over a thousand dollars a week, not 3 dollars an hour. But they have the right look and speak English so no one asked.

BTW, I am an independent and although I haven't been happy with Obama's right wing policies, this makes me want to vote for him. You have no knowledge of what we independents want but it helps your rant to say we think the same as you. Wrong again!

  7. Inside, Obama said those things before realizing he was dealing with a fomentingly crazy, divisive and obstructionist Congress, intend on doing NOTHING.

He shouldn't have dismissed the executive order in the first place. Why do Democrats feel so guilty about using the tools of government that the Republicans gleefully abuse? Bush issued dozens of executive orders.

  8. "The states that have passed draconian anti-immigration laws like Georgia have their crops rotting in the fields"

Oh, no! You hear that, everybody? We are all going to starve to death if we enforce our immigration laws! How did we survive for the first 200 years of our existence without millions of illegal aliens in our midst?

    Oh, no!

Oh, thank you slaves for continuing to pick tomatoes between 1864 and the 1970's when the first big waves of illegals began to arrive.

I wasn't aware of your generosity and don't know what we would have done without you.

I bet the other countries of the world that have always produced enough food for themselves despite having neither slaves nor illegal aliens don't realize just how lucky they have been not to starve to death over the thousands of years of human history that they lived without either.

Please stay, illegals! Please! We will perish without you! Just ask California!

  12. RICK, don't let the facts get in the way of your lies.

So what do you do when I point to facts that contradict your conjecture? You mock them as if by mocking them you can make them go away. Provide facts for your falsehoods, sir, otherwise it looks like you you suffer from xenophobia.

It is easier to mock the truth than to defend your lies.

  13. "We are all going to starve to death if we enforce our immigration laws!"

No, but the prices of food will increase significantly.

And you'll blame President Obama for that, too.

  14. RICK, can you expand on your California comment? This I want to hear since I live in California and we are doing just fine!

  15. @Rick...i usually am not a proponent of giving hate back to the haters...but you make it really hard! trust that you do not have insight into the independent swing voter. from everything you have ever written on this site you most certainly aren't one. so go find some log cabin blog to post on, we really aren't swayed by your BS.

undocumented children are not illegal and have not committed a crime. all areas of US law require intent for a crime. the undocumented children never had intent to illegally come to this country. we have already paid for their education. let's capitalize on it.

i think what most people seem to forget is this country was setup as a two party democracy. this implies that there are two main factions of popular thought on governance and anytime that shifts parties change. the intent is compromise. no one party gets what it wants unless it has enough support from both sides of the isle. the republicans have forgotten the meaning of compromise and only want to see Obama gone. you can’t only enforce current law without putting stain on the economy and the tax payer. the best bet is to develop ways of incorporating successful, educated, and hard working undocumented people into our society so we cut the costs of supporting them and bring in the revenue they generate. then you focus already taxed law enforcement and regulation to hone in on the undesirable elements (criminal, non-working, etc…) and strengthen our borders. that is a hybrid model based on compromise that would garner a majority of American support.

  16. "RICK, can you expand on your California comment? This I want to hear since I live in California and we are doing just fine!"

    http://www.tomhonig.com/santa_cruz_observed/2012/04/middle-class-leaving-the-golden-state.html

"About 40 percent of Californians pay no income tax. A quarter are on Medicaid. High taxes are paid by the rich -- but also by the middle class. So the rich are staying and so are the poor. Those in the middle take a look at high taxes, a high cost of housing and they're relocating. They have other places to go, says Kotkin, because employers more and more are going out of state. Twitter, Adobe, eBay and Oracle have moved staff to Salt Lake City. Apple, Facebook and eBay are building operations in Austin"

    ----

In other words, the influx of illegals is turning California into a Third World society.....exactly what you would expect when you introduce a Third World population base with a Third World mentality and they become the majority of the population.

A place where nobody wants to live any more, which is why the state has lost 4 million more people to migration to other states than it has gained n recent years.

Take heed America. This is what you don't want to be and what the long-term consequences of illegal immigration look like.

  17. All illegal aliens must be deported immediately, regardless of age. This amnesty encourages criminality by providing an incentive to illegal invasion and promotion of illegal alien adults having or bringing anchor babies to America.

  18. DRG, Illegal alien children (who have invaded this country regardless of whether through their own choice or that of their parents) are ILLEGAL. Anyone who is illegally in this country is an illegal alien and by definition a criminal. They are free to go back home and work or study there; they should not be allowed to remain in America.

Also, America was not set up as a two-party nation. There is nothing about political parties in the Constitution.

Now, why didn't someone tell that to those pale face Pilgrims. They might have taken their illegal azzes back home.

  20. "Now, why didn't someone tell that to those pale face Pilgrims. They might have taken their illegal azzes back home"

If they had, you would most likely be living in a grass hut with a dirt floor in Nigeria right now, with a flock of goats as your bedmates (only you would not have a bed, just a grass mat lying in the dirt) and your only meals being made available to you via foreign aid programs paid for by the descendants of those pale-face Pilgrims.

And if it wasn't for 300 years of free African labor there would have been no New York, Philadelphia, Boston or New Orleans, Savanah or Mobile for more pale faces to immigrate to.

You would have had to stay home in some cold shack with a dirt floor--living with other pale face peasants.

  24. Thanks, SAY WHAT.

You know, it's obvious to most thinking people that I do not hate White people. I wouldn't be a "regular" here on this blog if I did. I just can't allow right-wing White supremacists get away with their version of American (even World) history. I will always remind people like Rick and Ratbastard about the ugly side of THEIR history.
