Chick-Fil-A Brand Approval Rating Plummets

The controversy caused by Chick-fil-A COO Dan Cathy's interview, in which he said the company was "guilty as charged" for making large donations to anti-gay causes, has not been good for the restaurant's brand, GLAAD reports:

Chick-Fil-A and the Top National QSR Sector were measured with YouGov BrandIndex's Index score, the company's flagship brand health measurement. The Index score is an average of key scores measuring quality, impression, value, reputation, satisfaction and willingness to recommend. All measurements were filtered for adults 18+ who have eaten fast food in the past month. The Top National QSR sector average includes such brands as Pizza Hut, Arby's, Papa John's, Domino's, Taco Bell, KFC, McDonald's, Burger King, and Long John Silver's.

Rating_chickfilaChick-fil-A's index score has dropped 26 points since Dan Cathy's interview:

YouGov BrandIndex measurement scores range from 100 to -100 and are compiled by subtracting negative feedback from positive. A zero score means equal positive and negative feedback.

On July 16th, the day the Baptist Press published its Dan Cathy interview, Chick-Fil-A's Index score was 65, a very substantial 19 points above the Top National QSR Sector average score that day of 46.

Four days later, Chick-Fil-A had fallen to 47 score, three points below the Top National QSR Sector average score of 50. This past Wednesday, Chick-Fil-A had a 39 score compared to the Top National QSR Sector average score of 43.

Sarah Palin's feeling good about it though, as evidenced by this photo published to her Facebook page last night. Said Palin: "Stopped by Chick-fil-A in The Woodlands to support a great business."

  1. Oh Sarah, you're so cool and edgy, wearing your sunglasses in a fast food joint. Bono has nothing on you...nothing.
Of course, you're not the first stoner to have smoked a bowl and needed some nasty, cheap chow - hiding those bloodshot peeps.

  2. Well now that I know Sarah Palin loves, that changes EVERYTHING!

  3. As someone from Houston I find it difficult to have this happen in our own city. We are so thoroughly disgusted and embarrassed. I posted a thing on my blog and I even got a response from another gay man who actually supports her actions. What the hell is wrong with people??? Here's the blog article if you want to see it and his response:

  4. Well, it appears that she knows how to pick a hot man and bad food. When he has his heart attack from eating that crap, will she still be endorsing all that sodium encrusted swill?

  5. Stop focusing on the fast food restaurant. It's kind of pathetic that we get so distracted by having a foolish enemy. We need to turn our attention to other more important matters. Everyone isn't going to love us. So what? Rise above, if you're so confident of yourselves.

  6. Although I'm glad that Cathy's bigoted comments are registering to our favor in regards to his brand, I have to wonder how many franchise owners that do support LGBT causes that are being adversely affected by this. Or is it a requirement that franchisees support Cathy's views in order to open/own a store?

Anyway, nice to know perception is trending in our favor.

  7. Much as find CFA's actions reprehensible, it does not suit Towleroad to make a false quote that "he said the company was "guilty as charged" for making large donations to anti-gay causes".

Please at least try to take the high road by not putting words in other people's mouths. Copying the tactics of the religious right doesn't improve matters.

  10. It's great to see the backlash against Dan's bigotry. He speaks for the entire business and now the business is suffering the consequences.

  11. Has anyone got some actual data about Chick-Fil-A's sales since this controversy hit? No matter what people will say in official ratings, is the company losing customers overall because of its anti-gay policies? My fear is that this Chick-Fil-A thing will only intensify the culture wars at a time when the whole nation needs to see those wars cooled down a bit.

On the positive side at least we're not seeing Bristol Palin exploit her single mother status for profit here. If Bristol had showed up instead of Sarah I know we'd be hearing jokes about how she ought to buy one of the franchises and rename it "Chick-For-Lay!"

KEEP UP THE PRESSURE ! It's working !

  13. I hear they're trying to improve their ratings a bit by offering the "Traditional Family Value Meal Deal," ideal for one hungry man and up to 7 concubines.

  16. I'm sure Chick-Fil-A witnessed a sales spike in the immediately aftermath, but keep in mind, they have always worn their Christian values on their sleeves. I'm willing to be that people who are anti-gay already eat there. Biblical values has always been part of their DNA.

However this isn't going have any kind of longterm effect except a bad one for them.

  18. Just when they thought it couldn't get any worse -- an endorsement from Sarah Palin! Oh the clucking luck, damn the clucking luck of it all!

Probably good to have an ambulance standing by at headquarters just in case.

  23. Stop focusing on a fast food restaurant? I guess African Americans should have just ignored that whole Woolworth's lunch counter thing. Rosa Parks should have taken the next bus. Etc...
