Tom Waits has been acting this way his entire career, which is still going strong. He has been in numerous movies including Francis Ford Coppola’s Dracula, Short Cuts, Down By Law, Mystery Men and many others. The likelihood that Heath Ledger was familiar with Tom’s demeanor is high. I suppose if the Joker had been patterned on someone Lady CaCa or Madge, you people would be all over this.

Tom Waits is a fantastic musician. He’s also a credible actor. For the record, he played the part of Mr. Nick in Terry Gilliam’s “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus”. So, it is possible that Mr. Ledger took aspects of Mr. Wait’s personality in his portrayal of The Joker. Regardless, Tom Waits is the original hipster, the grandaddy of them all.

LOVE listening to Tom Waits’ interviews. Excellent interviews with him on NPR. This interview host is obviously NOT from Australia, and I’m sorry – he’s TERRIBLE!

Wait… someone that loved Cesar Romero’s Joker thinks Heath Ledger’s was overacted? You, sir, are who the phrase “No accounting for taste” was invented for.

The host is Don Lane, one of Australia’s most loved performers. He was American born and raised but spent a lot of his life, including his final years, in oz. He was also a great singer and used to open for Sammy davis jr. Also, I’m born in 1980 and I know Tom waits and probably a lot of that knowledge comes from the Internet.

Sounds exactly like the voice Heath did for the Joker. Hey people, there are reruns, ya know and Heath could have definitely seen that interview and mimicked the voice.

Dang. A chiropractor’s hands would twitch just from watching Waits move his head. He doesn’t look UNcomfortable so much as differently comfortable.

Reruns of Don Lane? No, that would have been like re-running Letterman, and didn’t happen.

@Jamal: Ledger met Waits in Imaginarium AFTER he did Batman.

@Booty: And I know who Beethoven is.
